Terrible officiating last night, by the way. The Ravens have every right to complain about that shit. Why do you hope "Goodell tells them to shut the hell up," Chris? You don't think in your heart of hearts that those guys got a raw deal? Don't be a second-rate limp-noodle Patriots cheerleader. That was crap.

What part was crap, exactly? The "controversial" holding call was clearly holding, just not on the intended receiver -- one of the receivers was wearing a Ravens defender like a cheap suit. Every reasonable person who's commented on the game has said that. (The crappy part was probably that it had been going uncalled all game, which was ridiculous.) There wasn't enough evidence to overturn the TD catch, and the same would have been true if it was called incomplete. The two unsportsmanlike penalties were due to Bart Scott completely losing his shit and forgetting to act like a professional. And for all the Ravens' bitching about the refs, they conveniently forget that they were almost given the game on a silver platter on the last play by not calling offensive pass interference on Derrick Mason. The refs didn't call the moronic timeout on fourth and 1. The refs didn't throw a boneheaded interception deep in Patriots territory in the fourth quarter. And the refs didn't call the most ridiculous series of plays late in the game when even ONE FIRST DOWN would have completely iced it.

So yeah, I think the Ravens should shut the hell up.

Bart Scotts thing was stupid, but it really didn't cost the team anything.

Going for a Hail Mary with like 15 seconds left instead of working the sideline and getting closer up field when it was completely open was stupid. they had time for two gimmies and get out to set up a field goal(although they were against the wind...would have been tough anyway). Ravens lost this game for themselves.

Although one rule change I would like to see. i would like to see the refs let teams play out false start penalties and allow the defense decide if they want the penalty or not, like on defensive offsides penalties. I find it annoying when the defense gets the stop behind the line of scrimmage and then essentially get penalized for the offense jumping, negating the down completely and netting the D an extra 2 yards.

And yeah, that was defensive holding. I don't get why anyone would complain about that. If you want to complain, complain about that BLATANT right in front of the refs block in the back on that screen pass a few minutes earlier that got them the field position.

And that still didn't lose the game. it came down to which coach would make the right decisions and we know who won that war of the minds.

But in the Ravens' defense, there is a conspiracy to keep the Pats undefeated until their last game, which is on the NFL network!. Get it? A 15-1 Pats team is less interesting than a 16-0 one. By then every cable subscriber will be clamoring for the NFL network!

I guess the Patriots just can't do anything right. They blow teams out and they're "running up the score." Then they have two close games and suddenly there is a blue print for beating them. It seems childish for the Ravens to react the way they did and it's no wonder the officials were calling them "boys." They certainly displayed no dignity in the loss.

The Patriots having been playing great all season. That's a hard thing to accept when you're blinded by hatred and jealousy. Someday, all the "Patriot haters" will look back and be able to say "Those were some great teams they had back then" and they'll be wishing they had appreciated greatness when it was in front of them.

35-17, Patriots over Steelers.

Well, for the offense, what would be the benefit of running a play? They would just kneel down.

Under the new rules, they could kneel down but lose the yards anyways (either declining the penalty and taking the few yards loss from the kneeldown as well as a loss of downs OR accepting the penalty and losing 5 yards).

Exactly. A choice of loss of down should be there for the offense. Especially considering the "Defense just jumped, lets go deep and worse thing that can happen is the play is null" happens every game.

I don't think a reciever flinching and the play getting ran anyway and results in a incomplete pass or a running back stuffed in the backfield should reward the offense an extra down.

I just don't understand why the offense would even bother, since all that could happen is a turnover, a loss of yards, or a penalty, whcih would also be a loss of yards. That's a dumb rule.

The offense technically wouldn't know it was a false start; maybe one of the defenders was offsides, for example.

As for a penalty-related rule change, I always felt that if one side of the ball would get "half the distance to the goal" then the other side should be "half the distance FROM the goal". It's like the team backed up near the goal line can just do whatever the hell they want because the penalty will be meaningless. I also felt that they should disregard penalties if it's clearly away from the play, i.e. calling pass interference on the left side when the ball was thrown to the right side, calling holding on the left tackle on a pitch to the right, etc. To me it equates to getting a "twelve men on the field" penalty when the 12th guy is running off the field and his "contribution" to the play is to continue running off the field and then to stand on the sidelines.

And the "blueprint for beating the Pats" is nothing more than blitzing constantly so Moss & Stallworth can't outrun your corners, jam Wes Welker and whatever TE they have on the field so he can't just constantly nickel and dime you, and then when the game is on the line and you're in the red zone don't throw a stupid interception. It's called "Douchery" if you try it in Madden.

I'm too football stupid to care one way or another. No wonder Lovie Smith doesn't trust me with top-secret info like "Alex Brown is day-to-day."

Thing is, the offense are the ones that actually start the play with the snap, so until that happens, the ball is "dead" (hence why in college it is called a "dead ball foul"). If they let the play go, the offense essentially gets a head start on the play, disrupting whatever rushing scheme the defense had, giving the offense an advantage (which is why a penalty is called). What's to stop two or three linemen from starting early? And since the offense won't gain anything by it (since they'll either go back 5 yards or lose a down), why try doing anything?

And once again, the qb doesn't exactly always know that a player jumped, just like a cornerback doesn't know that a defensive lineman jumped and nearly kills himself picking off the ball and running like a psycho and none of it counts.

I don't know what football you guys are watching, but until that whistle blows, they are going to keep playing. The offense could very well think the defensive line jumped first.

And offensive linemen jumping usually puts them out of position to make the proper block so it would usually end up in a walking through the line for a lineman.

I think that there is something wrong with it being 4th and inches, a lineman flinches before the snap, but the play still goes on, the offense is stopped but then the defense gets penalized because the offense gets another shot at it.

Basically what I am saying is that false start should be loss of down or the yards basically. If the offense is aware enough to catch when they jumped and just lay down, then more power to them.

Don't sheesh me, Marvin; as long as they don't play "Runnin' Down a Dream," it's gonna be fuckin' awesome.

The referees will spend 20 minutes debating about whether they are allowed to debate about the play, declare a tie, then go out for beers.

PLAGIARISM! Verbatim. JHawk, you're the fucking worst. You steal from bad Fox Sports columns and sound like Neil from Family Guy.

I actually stole that from a friend of mine (who doesn't post here) who didn't post a source. Eh, whatever, I figured it was so off the wall it had no chance of even comin close to being true anyway. Didn't even read the article.

Wow I don't see why people don't understand that. Every time I see a false start committed everyone else is busting their asses to break away from the defensive line and making their routes and etc, then they stop WHEN the whistle is blown. They are never going to go at no speed as the play PRESUMABLY gets underway.

Also no, nobody knows what the penalty is when it's in middle of a play or the heat of the moment. Offense will think it's offsides and defense will say false start.
