Craig Th 0 Report post Posted November 30, 2007 Last weekend, we were having some big sales on GPS. The Magellan Maestro 4040 was on sale for $299.99, $150.00 off. Well a bunch of people get them, including this middle aged women. Two days later she comes back in and wants another one. For free. I guess she left the unit in their car, somebody broke in and stole it. And she believes Radioshack should give them another one for free because it was stolen. And she was being dead serious. (I wasn't here for any of this, I had the day off. And if I was there instead of Tim, there was no way I would have been able to keep a straight face.) My friend Tim tells them that they can not do this. He tells them that it isn't our fault and we are not responsible for it. She starts going on tirade claiming that a RS employee probably broke into the car and took it so we can sell it to another customer. Tim tells her that there is no way this happened and that he really can't give them a refund. This goes on for about 20 minutes. Then Tim tells them that our Manager is coming in because he is sick. (The guy couldn't feel the right side of this face because of a sinus infection). She says well that makes sense because he isn't making any sense. Mike, the manager, comes in and tries to explain to this lady how crazy this sounds. It would be like buying a car, getting it stolen, then going BACK to the dealership asking for your money back. She wouldn't listen. She REALLY believed we should give her another one for free. She then wants to speak to someone in the district office about this so she can get her free GPS. He tells her there is no one who she can talk to because there is no one that will give it to her. I guess she called the district office and they told her she could get it at the sale price it was last weekend. But not one for free. WHAT WAS SHE THINKING? How does that make ANY SENSE? Nighthawk 0 Report post Posted November 30, 2007 I have that same model. I thought it was stolen once, but actually I just lost it. I have found it since then. If she's lucky, she will experience this as well.
Dobbs 3K 0 Report post Posted November 30, 2007 Should've said "No, I don't think you ever bought it...I think you stole the first one, so you have to buy another one at full price now!" Seriously, stupid people like that make me glad I know longer work in retail. There's too many idiots that you can't tell off without losing your job. kkktookmybabyaway 0 Report post Posted November 30, 2007 My first two thoughts upon reading Mole's story. 1) While working at the Quickie Mart years ago, this lady comes in and throws a bunch of change on the counter. She drives off, leaving her bill largely unpaid. Of course the po-pos were called. The reason this lady gave for doing this was that gas stations should give fuel to people that didn't have money available to them. 2) I was at Wal-Mart years ago and this customer was trying to get return a television set and get a better model in exchange. Problem was he didn't want to pay anything. As he was arguing he shouted, "Wal-Mart guarantees customer satisfaction~!" I had to walk away because I couldn't take anymore. Good story, Mole. Guest RyechnaiaSobaka Report post Posted November 30, 2007 Indeed, good story. I had some dumb people try to get a free GPS from me one time. They smashed out my driver's side window and rooted through my truck. Of course, I'm a lot smarter than they are (I made it through eighth grade, this is where our education histories begin to differ), so I didn't have my GPS in the vehicle. I also watched them scout the vehicle out my window and approach it with their weapon (hidden inside a pocket, for reasons I'll never understand - oh my god, what if someone saw you walking around with a spark plug or something?!). They were displeased when I came out in the middle of the crime and calmly explained my dissatisfaction with their totally understandable and rational behavior, given their backgrounds as young African-American men who clearly lived in poverty (thanks to me) and oppression (thanks to me). I then gave them the GPS for free as reparations for the possibility that someone in their family may have once been owned as a slave. Okay, so the part in italics is kind of made up. But it should make everyone feel warm inside. The real ending is somewhat different.

Dobbs 3K 0 Report post Posted December 1, 2007 The real ending is somewhat different. I want to hear the real ending. I hope it involved violence. Yeah, the same people like the ones who try to get their meals for free after eating the whole thing, are the ones who bitch about "the decline in customer service." I think there's more of a decline in customer quality than anything.
Guest Pizza Hut's Game Face Report post Posted December 1, 2007 I like to think of myself as the perfect customer. I never want to inconvenience anybody, and I always treat everyone very politely, making sure to say "please" and "thank you," and apologize for being an inconvenience if I ask if they can get a sweater from the back that isn't coffee-stained from some idiot who brought their Starbucks coffee into the store. I sympathize with the plight of the retail worker, and I do my best to be friendly and deferential, knowing the idiots you deal with on a daily basis. You probably hate my kind most of all, because the only thing retail people do here is just bitch about everything and everyone. I still hate these threads, by the way. Nope, in fact, we need more people like you. Well, not you, but you. In all fairness, I think most people are like Czech. If Mole and I dealt with this 40 or 50 times a day instead of once, there wouldn't be threads about it, we'd be too used to it. I've probably said this before, but I don't get the stigma that every customer in a store is either exceptionally stupid and/or unruly. I once estimated that of every 10 customers, probably four are generally great, five are indifferent and one is rude or tough to please. I'd say one out of every 100, if that, is memorably bad, like in Mole's story. I can't have that much better customer service skills than any of the other retailers here. Maztinho 0 Report post Posted December 2, 2007 I had a lady call my produce department 4 days after buying pistachios and eating half of them complaining that they where 4.99 a pound because when she went in at 4:30 am the price was marked lower (it was a Superbowl weekend deal at like 1.67 lb) and the manager hadn't been in to change the price back to normal. However, she sent her son in later in the day to buy some after he'd changed the sign, but since I agreed that at some point the pistachios _had_ been the price she wanted that she wanted a full refund. After about ten minutes of her yelling at me, and complaining that she'd spent 10 dollars on pistachios, and me trying to tell her that her only option was to bring the uneaten pistachios back for a refund on what they hadn't eaten. I had to ask her what she expected me to do over the phone, and she just flipped out and said she'd never shop at our store again. Bitching is fun. And yeah, probably 1 in 100 is one of those memorably horrible customers. Ooh, fun time bitching story II. I live in a somewhat rural community, and occasionally people come in asking for the toss away produce trim or culled fruits and veggies for their animals, which if we have some isn't a big deal to give to them. One couple who I'd seen a couple of times had bad luck in timing and missed out five or six times in a row with another guy who came in _everyday_ checking beat them in. And the wife just started screaming at me that I was killing off her "precious starving animals" and that they where going hungry because I wasn't telling other people "no" and saving food for just for her, that other peoples animals weren't as bad off as hers and that she knew the store director and was going to get me fired for it. I sort of got pissed and told her not to ever ask me for trim again and that if I saw them in the store I would stop whatever I was doing to throw the trim away so they couldn't have it, that they had no right to it nor did they deserve any of it because of the way she was acting, and that the manager wouldn't/couldn't fire me for not giving them what was technically garbage, and that she should probably sell off some of her pets if she couldn't shoulder the feeding cost of her livestock. Guest Vitamin X Report post Posted December 2, 2007 Now THAT was an interesting story. Rural communities are more foreign to me than other countries, so hearing what a slice of daily life is like in one is sometimes amusing. I hate it when people eat a whole dinner they paid for and then when the check comes they complain that it wasn't good and they dont wanna pay for it or want a discount or coupons or something.. Here's something I kind of wondered, though never gave a huge amount of thought to. Ever since I started eating at restaurants (or rather, paying for them) since I was a young lad, I wondered why food is the only service you ever pay for AFTER you receive it. And only at a restaurant. If I go to subway, or order a pizza (carryout or dine-in, though) I pay first, then eat. And if I'm ordering a service, like getting my car washed, I usually pay for it first, then it's washed. The fact that you order food, and then eat, and may only have a chance to complain about it upon receiving the check or just before asking for it, leads me to believe that the reason it's like that is to have the flexibility to be offered a discount or refunded if the customer isn't satisfied. Now that's only from a customer's perspective along with a very limited experience that I've had at a restaurant, but I do know from working a couple years at Domino's that we had to give out a lot of free pizzas if customers would call and complain about it. I didn't really care, since we had a record of what they ordered and could tell from that if they were trying to scam us or not; same thing when I worked at Blockbuster as a manager and had to give out all these late fee credits. If this is the case, then yeah, it's part of the job. Whatever. It's not your money they're ripping off, unless of course it's a small business.
Maztinho 0 Report post Posted December 2, 2007 In diners and whatnot though the waiters/tresses come by and ask if everything is tasting alright, and if a couple of friends who worked as waiters/tresses indicate some people say everything is fine until the end. The system is meant to be a satisfactory thing in play, but most people if they truly are upset will mention it early on giving the house an opportunity to correct the problem as best they can. The scammers will eat everything up and then complain that the fries tasted too greasy after the fact. Every time I've been into a place with moderate service the waiter/tress will stop by two or three times during the course of me eating to check on the quality. I suppose there would be instances where if it was busy or something that you wouldn't get a checkup and the only time you could complain was at the end, but generally speaking in my experience it's not the case.
Guest Vitamin X Report post Posted December 2, 2007 Yeah, the only time I get the "is everything alright?" question is if the restaurant is slow or if the server is a pretty good one to keep up with all the tables.
Dobbs 3K 0 Report post Posted December 2, 2007 Eh...if the food is really that terrible that you wouldn't want to pay for it, you can probably flag down a staff person or go talk to the manager to get the problem resolved. Of course, that's assuming your complaint isn't total BS to begin with.

Guest Report post Posted December 3, 2007 I probably would have said the same thing, although I haven't been put in position to do so. I haven't had problems with customers, outside of a few old people. And I just do whatever they tell me to do, it isn't worth the trouble to start arguing with them. After all, they're old, and I don't want them to think I'll kill 'em.
Fuzzy Dunlop 0 Report post Posted December 3, 2007 Probably the only time I ever got an attitude with a customer was this old woman who claimed I shorted her by sixty cents, and this was like two days after Christmas so the store was PACKED, and we had a huge line, but I couldn't go forward with another transaction until my manager checked the computer to see how much money was supposed to be in my register, and then count my register to see if it matched up, but this old woman was getting impatient, so she said, "you know what? Forget it, it's not worth holding everyone up just because one of us doesn't know math," and I said, "you got that right." Then she just flipped out, and started telling me that I was a terrible human being, and I had no right to criticize anybody about anything.
Twisted Intestine 0 Report post Posted December 3, 2007 Once I had a customer call me and ask if we had male and female plugs for a car stereo? (Can't remember what, it was years ago). I was working alone, and had a line up of about ten customers. So I went to take a quick look, saw the plugs, and came back and told the customer we did (First mistake, I should have told him no so that he wouldn't bother coming, or if he did and we had them, he'd be too happy that we had them to care). About 10-15 minutes later, the customer came to the store, and saw that we didn't have them (Turns out what I saw was for a different model). He got a little upset with me, and I went to the back to see if I could find any for him. When I didn't find them I knew he was going to yell at me so I didn't really want to go back out there, but I did, and he did. A manager overheard and came to see what the fuss was about.. He proceeded to call me names, and told the manager he drove two hours into town because I told him we had them. Bullshit. Yes, sorry, I made a mistake, but you don't have to try to make me look worse. Anyways, at this point I just went to the back, and when I came back out he was gone. I never heard from the manager about it, so that's good. Yeah, I guess that's a story about how bad customer service can lead to bad customers.
