That's not a surprise. Depp's box office clout (which doesn't really exist outside of POTC) taking a hit with a poor showing for Sweeny Todd is what I took more notice of. Kudos for Juno, which should grow as they expand to more screens next week.

Uh, Sweeney Todd was only in a little over 1,000 theaters. I think making 9 million is a decent number for it and it will probably make a lot more when it opens wide on Christmas Day. In comparison, Charlie Wilson's War was in 1000 more theaters than Sweeney and it made about the same amount of money.

Yeah, in a case like Sweeney Todd you don't look at the gross instead you look at the per screen average, which was $7,845. A decent amount for a R-rated musical.

Absolutely not. Sweeney Todd had an excellent showing, given its screen count and dark subject matter. It did better than expectations if anything, especially since adults have plenty to choose from.

 

The one thing to be concerned about is the Friday to Saturday drop, but that was probably from the musical's built in audience. It should be able to sustain momentum. If anything, this speaks highly of Depp's BO clout.

I'm honestly not surprised that Walk Hard did poorly, it looks like most of the funny moments are in the trailers and in terms of what people expect from Apatow and Co. nowadays it doesn't look like it fits the mold.

I can't think of a more loaded week than this one for me in a long time. This week alone, I'm seeing Juno, Walk Hard, and Sweeney Todd. I'm also checking out Before The Devil Knows You're Dead this week. I can't remember the last time I planned on seeing four movies in a week.

I think the teenage market that saw Superbad didn't want to see a music spoof biopic of the 60s and 70s, and adults didn't want to see a movie that relied on Cox jokes. Plus, it's John C. Reilly

I thought Sweeney was a wider release this weekend, which is why I thought the numbers were a let-down but since that isn't the case, I'm glad to see it's being so well received.

Yeah Sweeney just wasn't on that many places but I did go see it this weekend and it rules. This movie will have legs I think and keep doing that same amount for a while. If I recall Chicago never really had a big week but just that steady 10 million or so for a long time.

I was mad ST wasn't out here over the weekend but if it opens wide, I have a $1 movie ticket from fandango with its name on it..I just checked fandango and no go..so..yeah...BOO! Youd think with 16 screens they'd be able to show it but NO!

 

Will there be a 3rd National Treasure movie? The first one was all kinds of stupid but it made money, its from Disney and the sequel opened well. Cage must be begging for it..

No surprise that Walk Hard only scored $4 million. Sweeney Todd was actually a pretty good movie. Probably one of Tim Burton's best. A little cheesy, but Tim Burton and cheesy go hand in hand, along with Helena Bonham Carter.

 

Also, glad to see that NCFOM is still up there.

Can't say I agree with the release date of Walk Hard, but even in an ideal situation, I can't see if making a hell of a lot of money. It will probably have a lot of jokes from ear's that the majority of the people watching it will not get at all since they weren't even born. I may see it in theatres after Christmas, but a DVD renter seems more likely.

Regarding Walk Hard: apparently it's actually a really good flick, considering its astonishingly high 78% rating over at Rottentomatoes. Personally, I think the lame commercials killed this movie's potential right from the start. I see a lousy trailer for what looks like another dumbass spoof "comedy" with a dick joke in the title, it doesn't make me want to see that movie. When I heard that it was directed by Judd Apatow, I literally couldn't believe it, it just didn't seem possible for those ads and that person to be involved in the same film. The spoof genre has raped the moviegoing public over and over in the last decade, going from bad (Scary Movie sequels) to worse (Date/Epic Movie), and I think even the casual public has started to figure out that there's no surefire way to watch a crappy flick than to go see a movie that makes fun of other movies.

But you're right on in that the trailers didn't make it look like one of the Apatow movies (40YO Virgin, Knocked Up, Superbad) but rather more along the lines of Dodgeball or Blades of Glory. Which, without Will Ferrell, is not going to be nearly as successful as one of the other Apatow ones. In fact, I'll bet anything that if WIll Ferrell was there instead of John C it would have made #1.
