Another interesting bit is Flair talks about potential opponents and mentions Magnum. He says he'll hurt Magnum so bad he'll never be able to challenge him for the title again. Two days later...

 

It's going to be weird not seeing Magnum on these shows anymore. He was such a big part of JCP during this time and he was getting bigger and bigger with every appearance.

 

Agreed. It's always been an eerie thought that while watching Magnum grow into what should have been a mega-star... you knew it was all going to abruptly end. It put things in perspective and made you wonder... what could have been? Listening to several shoot interviews, there was no doubt he was going to win the NWA title at one point or other. If he had stayed healthy, I'm guessing the careers of Lex Luger and Sting would have been affected the most.

 

I'm also guessing the next NWA show probably is devoted to Magnum and such, although I could be mistaken.

Anyhow the Valiant vignette was, odd. Face turn for Baron too, interesting .

Should be interesting to see how they handled the Magnum crash.

Interesting bits...

 

-Magnum's last TV opponent was a jobber named The Grim Reaper

-Looks like JCP showed Vince McMahon-like levels of sensitivity by talking about Magnum's injury and then cutting straight to video footage of the Horsemen attacking Dusty and breaking his arm.

-The Koloff face turn takes place shortly after this.

The new NWA episode is pretty packed:

 

-They show the angle where the Horsemen break Dusty's hand in Crockett's parking lot

-They show the Nikita face turn and how the crowd went absolutely ballistic for it. Flair sells it great to set up the main event at Starrcade '86.

-They do an extended promo with the Road Warriors to hype the Skywalkers match with the Midnight Express. It contains a work-out segment where they might as well have shown Hawk and Animal shooting up.

The newest NWA episode re-aired angle where the Horsemen rubs Morton's face in the concrete backstage and then they break it during a big arena show.

 

I know we're all PG now, but the face in concrete angle is simplistic in nature but it's produces such a good visual.

Yeah Nikita vs. Flair was a strange main event for Starrcade but it was due to necessity. Not only is it a curious match but it's a Catch 22, since Koloff had just turned and was US Champ, so they weren't putting the belt on him, yet he just turned and couldn't afford a high profile loss to Flair. And that's why DQ finishes were born. But then they booked a DQ in the main event of the biggest show of the year....

 

This is going to sound nuts, but am I the only one who actually enjoys the Valiant/Jones angle? I've mentioned in the past on here that Jones was a mediocre manager, but this angle was nowhere near as awful was reputed. But then Valiant has always been more popular in my area (Memphis/USWA) than he was anywhere else. Still, it's harmless midcard antics with a goofy face up against an army, friends betray him and take money, etc.

I agree cabbage, the angle has been more fun than I would have thought. I didn't have cable back in that time, plus I was 4 so I didn't follow the NWA/WCW back then. So it's cool to be able to see all these oldschool shows and learn more about the old-school storylines and such. The Valiant/Jones angle is simple wrestling storytelling and was able to strecth out for months with so many twists and turns, yet kept you interested. Even now, I want to see Jones get his.

They show the old WCW episodes in sequence. They are up to November 1986 right now.

I have to admit, I've gotten used to it. Jones is a buffoon manager but it's kind of funny. At least it's a well-done, drawn out feud. I enjoyed the show a few weeks ago where it was the focus of attention. Like I said then, the inclusion of Rick Rude and Manny Fernandez into the Army improved it immensely.

 

I can't wait till the NWA shows start getting longer.

 

BTW, at the end of the show, Ivan said that Nikita must be punished "old country way." Thankfully, he didn't imply what that meant...

I wasn't a big fan of Valiant when I was a kid, but enjoy him now if only for the fact that he reminds me of my 50-something-year-old REO-Speedwagon-listening in-laws.

They were always two hours with commercials... the short shows came if they were being pre-empted for some reason (Braves baseball or some other sport commitment TBS used to have, such as college football).

Hah...I had forgotten about the college football pre-emptions. Awesome. I swear 24/7 is awesome at making me feel like I'm 10 years old again sitting in my parent's basement. On a completely non-wrestling irrelevant note, the half hour before NWA Saturday Night was always Mama's Family time.
