bob_barron 0 Report post Posted April 20, 2008 Really not a surprise. Most box office analysts has Forbidden Kingdom defeating Sara Marshall at the box office
Craig Th 0 Report post Posted April 20, 2008 Just because of the PG-13 rating? Damn, I thought SM was going to do $30 million. Maybe word of mouth will keep it going because it was an great movie. Nothing beats word of mouth.
bob_barron 0 Report post Posted April 21, 2008 Forgetting Sarah Marshall had no chance of doing $30 million. The movie had no big names, and this was a movie about a guy getting over a breakup, not the best sell.
SamoaRowe 0 Report post Posted April 21, 2008 Forgetting Sarah Marshall had no chance of doing $30 million. The movie had no big names, and this was a movie about a guy getting over a breakup, not the best sell. I think the past few years have proven that "big names" don't open movies like they used to. Would you have guessed the success of Superbad or Knocked Up? Forgetting Sarah Marshall had that sort of buzz growing over it, so it seemed to be a good bet for a big opener, while The Forbidden Kingdom had squat. Besides, when does Jackie Chan ever get a big opening when he's not partnered up with some comic relief? This is a surprise.

You're wrong. If most pre-release indicators point out ot Forbidden Kingdom being #1, then it being #1 is not a surprise. Jackie Chan can't open movies on his own, but there's no reason to be surprised that a movie starring the two biggest Asian imports wouldn't do that well at the box office. It had the Li-Chan teamup, plus a PG-13 rating and a family friendly premise that could appeal to all audiences. Forgetting Sarah Marshall was an R-rated movie about a guy getting over a breakup. Superbad's opening? I think the fact that it hit above 30 was a surprise, but not that it had a big opening weekend. Buzz had been building all summer, with advanced screenings causing word of mouth, and Knocked Up doing so well only caused more interest in Superbad. Knocked Up's success? Absolutely. It opened at the perfect time, when there were no comedies in the marketplace, and the month of May saw one big budget blockbustet after another. It was the follow-up to a movie that grossed $109 million and had tremendous word of mouth, had a relateable premise, and a very effective marketing campaign. SamoaRowe 0 Report post Posted April 21, 2008 Hey, maybe I should've seen this coming, but I didn't. The Forbidden Kingdom looked like the latest in a string of hokey looking action movies that wouldn't do big business, and Forgetting Sarah Marshall just felt like a hit, growing on the Knocked Up/Superbad momentum. If you predicted otherwise, good for you, but I don't think it was a foregone conclusion like you seemed to think it was.
Vigo 0 Report post Posted April 21, 2008 It wouldn't surprise me if a bunch of teens bought tickets to Forbidden Kingdom and switched theaters to see FSM. I think FSM is going to be one of those movies that's going to make its big money over time versus over one week.
cabbageboy 0 Report post Posted April 21, 2008 Nearly all the analysts had predictions of Forbidden Kingdom being #1 this weekend. I recall seeing the trailer and noting "Man, Jackie Chan and Jet Li in the same movie? That could be really cool." And to be honest I question Forgetting Sarah Marshall's marketing. The hype for the movie is mostly centered around the main guy showing his penis for extended periods of time. It's the first time I've ever heard the advance word about a movie being centered around seeing a naked dude. It would be like if Knocked Up had the marketing of "Come see Seth Rogen's ass the morning after they have sex!"
LaParkaMarka 0 Report post Posted April 21, 2008 The commercials are mostly some guy crying about a breakup and being naked. Why would anyone want to see that? The marketing job was terrible.
