MMA Comments that Don't Warrant a Thread

Recommended Posts

The hardest part of being a new fan, at least it was to me, is appreciating the details and intricate things that make up MMA and more specifically, the ground game. It's easy for everybody to enjoy a good KO but it takes time to learn to love a guy being able to pass somebodys guard, mount and other types of positioning. When I was new to MMA I absolutely hated it when guys went to the ground because I didn't understand their motivation and reasoning.

Just make sure you don't confuse good ground work with boring lay n' pray.

I find escaping submissions more exciting than 2 guys standing up trading jabs.

So do I but I'm talking about someone laying on top of the other guy with the occasional weak punch thrown in there.

Watch some Yves Edwards, great striker and always fun to watch(atleast IMO). LOTC mentioned the main ones, but you should also check out some Chuck Liddell, Bas Rutten, Matt Hughes, Shogun, Wandy Silva, Randy Courture, Tito Ortiz, Quinton Jackson, and Dan Henderson.

Actually the person that 1st got me into MMA, was believe it or not is one of the most hated men in all of MMA... Gilbert Yvel. I watch a highlight reel of his and was absolutely blown away. His kicks and knees, then I found out how much of a dirty fighter and black eye on MMA he was and I started to dislike him.

Like Ken Shamrock.

Coleman fighting in UFC was outed a while back by the Brit he's taking on, can't remember the dudes name but he trains out of Wolfslair Gym. I don't like the idea of Coleman fighting again before Shogun exacts his revenge but whatever. Just prolonging the inevitable.

I'd go with some PRIDE stuff from about #16, which was Championship Chaos I do believe.

While I was into MMA before, when I saw Herring v.s. Nog semi-live (As live as PRIDE got then sadly), I was fucking HOOKED. Badass fight. Silva v.s. Saku isn't that bad either. Rest of the card has some really good stuff if I remember right.

I am an admitted PRIDE fanboy though, so take that with a grain of salt.

The fight I referenced in the picture is a great start as well. Seeing Penn cut through Gomi's butterfly guard like, well, butter, into full mount was beautiful jiu jitsu that didn't feature a guard, as that's seems to be the misconception among the masses, that BJJ=Guard. It's got ground fighting, but it's violent enough that I think you'll pay attention.

Matt Hughes vs. Frank Trigg 2 has gotten tons of people I know into MMA, for those that were interested in Gracie coming back, watching those Unleashed specials, they all loved the back and forth action of that fight. Also has ground fighting that's easy to understand since it's violent and the slam is awesome as well as the storyline.

A funny side-note to that is the extra features section of UFC 54 has Hughes and St. Pierre backstage after GSP's bitch-makery of Trigg. Hughes talks about the earlier fight in the evening between Prangley and Lutter where Lutter took two ballshots from errant Prangley knees. Hughes is kind enough to mention to GSP that if he ever caught him he'd give him time and GSP responds in kind.

This lil segment makes their fight just a bit cooler. Not like it needed the help.

I'm watching these old PRIDE's and they're pretty decent. I like Sakuraba being the Gracie killer.

Who is the best Gracie anyway?

So PRIDE unlike UFC didn't start out as the brutal no-holds barred show right? MMA had been around for a bit so it was able to start out as a regulated sporting event. Right?

Definately my favorite Hughes fight, and possibly my favorite fight of all time.(Just cause i'm a Hughes fan-boy though) the running slam across the ring after narrowly escaping the RNC is without a doubt one of the greatest moments in MMA history...

So the first couple of PRIDE's had worked matches?

I wouldn't recommend early PRIDE (By early PRIDE I mean like the 1-11 minus 10 box set they sell) stuff...I was just bored by alot of it although there are a few gems in there.

Where can I get the Penn/Gomi fight i've been wanting to watch it for a very long time??

There were some works at the start of PRIDE. Takada's fights are generally considered works, with the exceptions being the two Rickson fights. Some think they tried to screw Rickson over by telling him to take it easy on Takada, then Takada suddenly tried to win in the second fight. If they did...didn't work.

The most glaring is Nobuhiko Takada v.s. Alexander Otsuka. Their both wrestlers, so they just start busting out verticle suplexes, running the ropes, shit like that. Said to be a good match surprisingly enough given the circumstances.

If you listen to most people, the few fights Ogawa had back then were works too. He fought a time or two, I know of one off the top of my head with Gary Goodridge.

But the vast, vast majority of PRIDE is 100% shoots, despite all the claims made everytime a favorite fighter loses.

Were any of Sakuraba's fights worked?

I still wonder if the matches on my PRIDE 20 DVD are out of order or missing some? It just seems different from the tape I have.

I wish I could find a year by year list of each PRIDE show so I'd know when some of the matches on my DVD's occur.

Pride works:

Any fight that Takada won

Ogawa vs. Goodridge

There have most assuredly been other fights where one fighter was probably asked to "take it easy" on the other fighter, but for out and out pre-planned finishes the above "fights" are the best examples.

As for Saku's fights being worked, that's opening up a huge can of worms for some people, but I'm not among them, I consider all of Saku's fights to be legit. Of course he got some help in some (the Mezger fight for instance) but IMO all of the fights he had in Pride were legit.

Just thought i'd post this retarded tidbid. Someone has "hacked" Forrest Griffin's myspace claiming to be Stephan Bonnar:

Title: Forrest Griffin's Myspace hacked by Stephan Bonnar!

Body: That's right Forrest... I hack your Myspace then your face at UFC 62.

AIM = ferraris

Allan Goes def. Kazushi Sakuraba via Unanimous JD in a just world.

I was gonna mention that too, but I don't think there were judges in that fight.

I know. I just like mentioning the fact that Goes, for all intents and purposes, beat Sak, thus blemishing the whole "Sak > BJJ" sentiment.

Ogawa vs Leko still looks fishy to me these days as Leko was a good kickboxer before his first PRIDE fight against Ogawa and the punch that dropped him looked like it wouldn't have phased an old woman, much less somebody used to getting hit.
