MMA Comments that Don't Warrant a Thread

Recommended Posts

According to Ed Soares, after the Irvin fight Anderson will be defending his belt against Okami. No big surprise but that's pretty close to official.

Just finished an interview at The Fight Network for a position with their writing staff. Met Mauro, cool dude. Sorry Rudo, I didn't punch him because if I got the job it would likely create an awkward work environment. Keep your fingers crossed for me, fellow MMA Folder-ites.

Can someone provide me with an answer as to why 20 pounds between 185 and 205 is significant but 20 pounds between 205 and 225 isn't? For that matter, why Heavyweight should have a 60 pound buffer while all other divisions don't?

...why Heavyweight should have a 60 pound buffer while all other divisions don't?

Because of the division's general lack of talent, even with such a wide buffer. Dividing up MMA's weakest mainstream weight class would only exacerbate this siutation, and besides that, even in the much older and talent-filled sport of boxing, there's still yet to be a period in time where there's been a large number of fighters near the upper limits of the class dominating the division.

Not necessarily fair, but it's simply a matter of practicality at this point.

For guys at higher weight classes, that amount of weight lost represents a smaller percentage of total body weight. Most of them have a larger frame from which they can feasibly sweat off weight from.

Without wanting to start another McMahon/Legdrop saga, I've just got through watching a re-run of The Ultimate Fighter Season 1 and I don't see how Bonnar didn't win the season finale. Forrest was tough as old boots but for me Bonnar should have won (and I'm a big Forrest fan). What were people's thoughts at the time? Much controversy? Anyone watched it recently?

I haven't watched it in a while but I remember at the time watching it live I thought Bonnar had won it but I was rooting for him so there's a bit of bias there. Upon re-watches I think Forrest takes it though it's close.

I've often brought this up as a reason for my distaste for size mismatches at smaller weights, but I think Rudo was talking more of the extreme differences at HW.

I had Bonnar 29-28 as well. I've seen the fight a few times and it's what I always come up with. Although it's so close it's not really worth having a serious argument about.

I think Forrest got it due to the takedowns and ground control. IIRC the cleaner shots were being thrown by Forrest too. The one issue that argues it in favor of Bonnar is damage and coming close to finishing the fight.

I've watched it twice once live, and once about 2 years ago when I bought Season 1 on DVD... I scored the fight for Bonnar 29-28 both times.

"But before all that happens, I’ve got to beat Kenny Florian on August 9th. A win over Kenny puts me in the number one contender’s spot. There’s no ifs, ands, or buts about it. It solidifies and distinguishes that I am the number one contender and that I deserve a title shot.

BJ Penn, you’ve got one fight left before you go anywhere else." - The Sexican, letting Doughboy know that his comments after beating Sherk were douchetastic.

We all know how much I love Huerta but he'd get housed by BJ. Probably in a manner more resembling a "Stevenson" than a "Sherk".

Besides finishing painting my house I plan on spending the weekend watching all of the MMA I missed since May... the torrents are all fired up and ready to be watched.

I think I'll start with Faber v. Pulver, move to DREAM 4, work through the three UFCs and end with Elite XC SNF.

It's going to be an MMAtastic weekend.

Agreed. Florian doesn't have Guida's wrestling but it's still good enough to bring and keep Rogers down and his stand-up is better then Clay's.

It's not just that, but those fucking elbows by Florian on the ground... Plus Florian has better Jiu Jitzu then Guida.

Speaking of DREAMS I'm hoping that Uno rapes Aoki a new one. They're also doing Hunt vs Jerome LeBanner in an MMA bout on the card so hopefully that delivers something fun.

Why the Aoki hate? He's an entertaining fighter...

Stout Vs. Etim is offical for UFC 89... I don't know anything about Etim, could someone spread some light? Does he have a good chance against Stout?

Etim is tall and lanky with good striking but from what I've seen Sam should be more polished with his standup. I seriously think Leben, Sout, Diego, Davis and Alves are the only non-Euro's on that card.

I hate how he pulls guard all fucking day like it's his job.

I don't feel as strongly as Curry but I'm certainly not pulling for him.
