Dark Age Posted June 13, 2008 Report Posted June 13, 2008 I know that a lot of the regulars here love him just as much as me, so it seems only right that we have a thread for the coolest, most inspiring, positive guy on the planet, who also happens to be the most underrated (and interesting) musician around today! He apparently has as many as three new albums out this year, though they were all meant to be out in 06/07 originally.
mfn Posted June 13, 2008 Report Posted June 13, 2008 I don't know much about him besides the fact that he's one cool dude. I do enjoy his music, especially when I'm around a bunch of rowdy friends gettin my booze on.
Youth N Asia Posted June 14, 2008 Report Posted June 14, 2008 I had his first album and loved it, just dumb fun. Saw him live in 2003 and had a great time. Haven't really paid much attention to him since then
BUTT Posted June 14, 2008 Report Posted June 14, 2008 I love all his albums, although Close Calls is a lot more hit & miss than his first two. I saw him in '03 and it was awesome. He was in the midst of opening for Hoobastank playing the mid-level venues of the northeast and he still came down to Allentown to play a 40-minute set in a shitty club opening for "Ill Nino", of whom I know nothing except that they have a song on the Freddy vs Jason soundtrack. Also, I e-mailed him once and he replied. What a good dude.
HollywoodSpikeJenkins Posted June 14, 2008 Report Posted June 14, 2008 My college brought him in to do a show about 2 years ago. I wasn't really a fan, but I went anyway to score with this chick and he was a lot of fun. Moshing and two-stepping (I am from Long Island) were banned, but he kept telling everyone to do it. Before his last song, he said "Fuck it, everyone go crazy." A riot nearly broke out and then he invited everyone at the show out to pizza afterwards. Good times and I'm now a fan of his for life.
luke-o Posted June 14, 2008 Report Posted June 14, 2008 I've only heard I Get Wet and The Wolf, can anyone recommened me the other good WK albums?
BUTT Posted June 14, 2008 Report Posted June 14, 2008 There's only one other full-length, it's called Close Calls with Brick Walls. You can listen to his entire recorded catalog at andrewwk.com.
Guest Epic Narcissism Posted June 14, 2008 Report Posted June 14, 2008 Another phenomenon I missed the boat on. I'm going to listen to some Stereolab and pity myself for not being cool.
PLAGIARISM! Posted June 15, 2008 Report Posted June 15, 2008 Still love him, though initially my support for him was in defiant opposition to the nu-metal lot who shat on him for being repetitive and seemed proud of themselves for spotting a 'fake', whilst creaming over Lost Prophets, Incubus et al. He's great. And a gosh-damn handsome man.
Dark Age Posted June 15, 2008 Author Report Posted June 15, 2008 He is indeed a very handsome man, though I do prefer his IGW years look. He's still great now though. Czech (I think; it's been a long time since I've been here!) you might like The Moving Room, but I'm not sure what else. Sensei (?) what don't you like about CCWBW? Have you heard the title track to Young Lord which he released earlier this year?
BUTT Posted June 15, 2008 Report Posted June 15, 2008 Maybe "hit and miss" wasn't the right description. I like most of the songs on it, I just don't like them as much as my favorite songs on the first two albums. I like "I Came For You," "The Moving Room," "You Will Remember Tonight," "Into the Clear", "One Brother" and "Pushing Drugs" a lot. "Mark My Grace" and "Don't Call Me Andy" are OK. But there's nothing on it that's as good as "Ready to Die" or "Got To Do It" or "I Get Wet" or "Totally Stupid" or "The End of Our Lives," in my opinion.

In an ideal world, he'll get more experimental for a while then be ready for another 'classic sound' AWK album down the line.
Dark Age Posted June 15, 2008 Author Report Posted June 15, 2008 That's fair enough. I take CCWBW to be a concept album of sorts about Andrew's own "transformation" from the IGW/Wolf era guy to how he is now (or was in 2006 at least). It's still awesome, but I prefer the other two, yeah. "The Moving Room" is right up there with "Totally Stupid", "I Love Music" and the likes though. I'd love a 'classic sound' AWK album but I think we might be waiting a while for it, with the rate he's going at releasing the current stuff. There's still Young Lord, The Carrier and Eberwhite, which were all meant to be released by the end of last year. Plus a solo piano album.
PILLS! PILLS! PILLS! Posted June 16, 2008 Report Posted June 16, 2008 Another phenomenon I missed the boat on. I'm going to listen to some Joan of Arc and pity myself for not being cool.
PUT THAT DICK IN MY MOUTH! Posted June 16, 2008 Report Posted June 16, 2008 Another phenomenon I missed the boat on. I'm going to listen to some Stereolab and pity myself for not being cool. I don't think I "get" the Stereolab reference here. Are you saying that they're not cool? That they're another "phenomenon" you missed the boat on? Was it just a random namedrop??? Help me out here.
BUTT Posted June 17, 2008 Report Posted June 17, 2008 He's making fun of us for listening to dumb hair metal.
Dark Age Posted June 17, 2008 Author Report Posted June 17, 2008 AWK's so much more than just hair metal!
Skywarp! Posted June 17, 2008 Report Posted June 17, 2008 Still waiting for CCWBW to show up stateside in a format I can use.
Guest Jesus Freaks on Coke Posted June 17, 2008 Report Posted June 17, 2008 Another phenomenon I missed the boat on. I'm going to listen to some Stereolab and pity myself for not being cool. I don't think I "get" the Stereolab reference here. Are you saying that they're not cool? That they're another "phenomenon" you missed the boat on? Was it just a random namedrop??? Help me out here. Mostly random. I was listening to Transient. . . at the time and it struck me as not being particularly fun music like Andrew WK is. I wasn't making fun of you, Kreeser, just myself. Maybe citing Mike Oldfield instead would've better conveyed my tendency to enjoy dismal and ponderous music.
Edwin MacPhisto Posted June 17, 2008 Report Posted June 17, 2008 My love for him has been stated many times. And it burns so strong! I need another tour.
Steviekick Posted June 17, 2008 Report Posted June 17, 2008 Same here. I saw him three times while he was on support of I Get Wet. I need some more live AWK.
King Kamala Posted June 17, 2008 Report Posted June 17, 2008 Czech may hate me for this but for years I confused Stereolab with Audiovent (little remembered Incubus vanity project).
Skywarp! Posted June 17, 2008 Report Posted June 17, 2008 Czech's head will probably explode when he hears about Vampire Weekend and Andrew W.K. covering Tom Petty's "Don't Come Around Here No More."
Guest Jesus Freaks on Coke Posted June 17, 2008 Report Posted June 17, 2008 Everyone always thinks my head is going to explode. "If Czech sees your grammatical error, his head is gonna explode." "Don't let Czech watch that youtube video or his head might explode." Made getting drunk much funner Czech's going to have a stroke. When we do Gang Warz 3, Czech needs to be a captain. Just to see his head explode from trying to actually make it work. Merging threads since I think Czech will explode before long. If Czech watches this video his head'll probably explode Oh, man, Czech's head is going to explode after reading that. Cranial combustion is such a concern for me, I guess. I'm a Spinal Tap drummer. Or the guy from Scanners.
Copper Feel Posted June 17, 2008 Report Posted June 17, 2008 Czech's head is really going to explode after I click the "add reply" button and the point is driven home one more time. Andrew WK is perfectly acceptable, but I shall probably never truly be a fan for similar reasons to Czech.
PUT THAT DICK IN MY MOUTH! Posted June 19, 2008 Report Posted June 19, 2008 Czech's head will probably explode when he hears about Vampire Weekend and Andrew W.K. covering Tom Petty's "Don't Come Around Here No More." goddamn Vampire Weekend is so gay
Obi Chris Kenobi Posted June 26, 2008 Report Posted June 26, 2008 haha I think he's funny as fuck, especially if it is all a front a 'gimmick'. There's a part in Aqua Teen Hunger Force that cracks me up every time....
The Niggardly King Posted December 1, 2008 Report Posted December 1, 2008 can someone explain what the fuck is going on here? it's like one bad skit that won't end. A drunk Andrew WK trying to play at the gathering of the juggalos?
Dark Age Posted December 2, 2008 Author Report Posted December 2, 2008 He wasn't drunk, he was pretty much taking the piss out of them, in his own positive kinda way. They were absolutely brutal with him, though. It's funny, but the bit where he gets dragged off stage is so harsh. Still, a victory for Andrew, I think!
Dark Age Posted December 2, 2008 Author Report Posted December 2, 2008 So Andrew released a new album last week! Japan only again, it's him covering a bunch of J-Pop songs. And it is awesome. Just ridiculously epic stuff, kinda similar to The Wolf in a lot of ways. I wasn't sure we would ever hear the dude like this again. http://www.mediafire.com/file/yk3i2mdgnjw/01 - Kiseki http://www.mediafire.com/file/gwg2zj4v0br/02 - Giroppon http://www.mediafire.com/file/lhntrwqectx/03 - Sense Of Shame http://www.mediafire.com/file/mtzuimwllww/04 - Linda Linda http://www.mediafire.com/file/nzwzetz2z2z/05 - Little Love Song http://www.mediafire.com/file/hzzqygtzzjy/06 - Gakuen Heaven http://www.mediafire.com/file/ydgnmiz2ygu/07 - Runner http://www.mediafire.com/file/qevwjhzyll2/08 - Monica http://www.mediafire.com/file/ljmmymgymdm/09 - Bohemian http://www.mediafire.com/file/m3gddcyklwk/10 - Love Is Ova http://www.mediafire.com/file/o2ojznmw3rd/11 - My First Kiss http://www.mediafire.com/file/zgdjh5d0m52/12 - Warrior http://www.mediafire.com/file/e22mngljjlm/13 - Island Song http://www.mediafire.com/file/emq24zmy4dv/14 - Thrill http://www.mediafire.com/file/g4d42nhr3fz/19 - Party (You Shout!) The last one is an original AWK song, a bonus on the greatest hits he's just released. It's okay I guess. Everyone who declared themselves an AWK fan needs to listen to this album! Do it!
