Youth N Asia Posted July 6, 2008 Report Posted July 6, 2008 Has anyone seen Mongol? I'm interested in that one
Nighthawk Posted July 6, 2008 Report Posted July 6, 2008 I'm interested in Mongol too. But it only seems to be playing at one theater here (in Oakland), and I really don't feel like going out there. If it was playing pretty much anywhere else, I'd go.
MarvinisaLunatic Posted July 6, 2008 Report Posted July 6, 2008 I figured over 100 million for Hancock given the holiday weekend and the fact it opened on Wednesday, and its Will Smith and a super hero movie on the 4th of July.
Craig Th Posted July 6, 2008 Author Report Posted July 6, 2008 Smith has never done over $100 million the first weekend.
bob_barron Posted July 6, 2008 Report Posted July 6, 2008 Hancock pretty much did as everyone predicted.
cabbageboy Posted July 6, 2008 Report Posted July 6, 2008 The key to Hancock is what it does in the next couple of weeks. It will face direct competition next week from Hellboy 2 (which is probably a better movie), and then on the 18th The Dark Knight will destroy everything in its path.
Gary Floyd Posted July 6, 2008 Report Posted July 6, 2008 I finally saw the trailer for "Mongol", and it's now in my "must watch" list with "Dark Knight", "Hellboy II", and "Mother of Tears." Speaking of which, has anyone seen MOT yet?

Hellboy is a niche flick, no way its going to do more than say..35 million which wont be enough for #1. Journey to the Center of the Earth will get more than Hellboy.
fazzle Posted July 6, 2008 Report Posted July 6, 2008 Gotta say that I'm kinda surprised at the drop-off for Wall-E, I figured it would retain more of an audience than that. Wall-E had the biggest second week drop-off for a Pixar movie since A Bug's Life.
Nighthawk Posted July 6, 2008 Report Posted July 6, 2008 Funny, Bug's Life and Wall-E are competing for second favorite Pixar movie for me (first is Incredibles).
bob_barron Posted July 6, 2008 Report Posted July 6, 2008 Some of that can be blamed on July 4th falling on a Friday, which hurts weekend business.
fazzle Posted July 6, 2008 Report Posted July 6, 2008 Just noticed I was wrong. Toy Story 2 also had a bigger second week drop than Wall-E (51.6%) However that was actually it's third week, as it opened limited for its first week. On a side-note, I really want to see Wall-E, but haven't had time to yet. Maybe next weekend. Edit: and in searching that, I also just found out that they're releasing a 3D version of Toy Story 2 in 2010?! Want.
Ketamine Disaster Posted July 6, 2008 Report Posted July 6, 2008 Love Guru is bombing, thank god. I heard that Myers did the movie for free, as long as he got 10% of the gross over 30 million. Anyone hear anything similar to that? Hopefully this will teach him to stop making the same shit movie over and over.
bob_barron Posted July 7, 2008 Report Posted July 7, 2008 I haven't heard anything about that, and I did some googling and didn't find anything.
Ketamine Disaster Posted July 7, 2008 Report Posted July 7, 2008 Eh, my friend's fiancee told me that. Didn't really pay too much attention to it.
mfn Posted July 7, 2008 Report Posted July 7, 2008 if you want to see mongol, go see it. maybe it was because i was stoned, but i thought it was one of the better movies i've seen in a long, long time.
Lil' Bitch Posted July 7, 2008 Report Posted July 7, 2008 Will Smith made an entertaining superhero. I didn't bother listening to the critics this time, I thought it was a good film overall.
TheOriginalOrangeGoblin Posted July 7, 2008 Report Posted July 7, 2008 This makes the 8th consecutive movie for Big Will to gross over $100 million, which has never been done before by anyone.
cd213 Posted July 7, 2008 Report Posted July 7, 2008 I finally saw the trailer for "Mongol", and it's now in my "must watch" list with "Dark Knight", "Hellboy II", and "Mother of Tears." Speaking of which, has anyone seen MOT yet? I saw MOT a while back. It is a good movie, but if you are looking for classic Argento, you aren't going to get it here. It was a good ending to a a great series. Not his best film, but far from his worst. I enjoyed it.
cabbageboy Posted July 7, 2008 Report Posted July 7, 2008 I mostly made the Hellboy 2 vs. Hancock comparison due to it being the superhero genre. I'm not really sure how Hellboy will do vs. Journey to the Center of the Earth. It's possible that they will both make similar money. Anyone else find the placement of Hellboy 2's release a bit peculiar? It's being released 1 week after Hancock and the week before Dark Knight. Wouldn't it have a better chance if it was released in the fall? Hellboy seems more like a fall/winter movie to me.
Youth N Asia Posted July 7, 2008 Report Posted July 7, 2008 I had zero interest in seeing the first Helloboy, based on trailers...but this one looks pretty cool
bob_barron Posted July 7, 2008 Report Posted July 7, 2008 Journey will be helped out by inflated ticket prices, but I think 3-D can only get you so far. Who cares to see this film in 2-D? Meet Dave will probably have a good opening weekend because it's Eddie, but then sink from there. Hellboy will probably do in the 20s-30s, and I think Hancock will have a big fall. I see top 5 being: 1) Hancock 2) Hellboy 3) Meet Dave 4) Wall-E 5) Journey Of course, this means the top 5 will probably be totally the opposite!
2GOLD Posted July 7, 2008 Report Posted July 7, 2008 Anyone else find the placement of Hellboy 2's release a bit peculiar? It's being released 1 week after Hancock and the week before Dark Knight. Wouldn't it have a better chance if it was released in the fall? Hellboy seems more like a fall/winter movie to me. I'm not really sure why it's coming out in the middle of the summer either. The first one didn't light the box office on fire and I just don't see Hellboy being a huge draw. I'm going but that's because I liked the first one and I think this one is just going to be an improvement. I would have thought August would have been a better time than July but I don't know really.
Ripper Posted July 7, 2008 Report Posted July 7, 2008 I own the first Hellboy and I tell yah....I kinda hated that movie. It was pretty freaking bad to me. Don't know why...it just...was. I have no intrest in seeing the second one honestly. I blame Selma Blair.
cabbageboy Posted July 7, 2008 Report Posted July 7, 2008 Guillermo Del Toro is a really good director but I don't know if most of the material he has done has matched his actual talent. And yes I know Pan's Labyrinth got massive acclaim, but I have to admit I wasn't terribly into it. Bob, as far as Meet Dave goes, I can't see that doing anything. It just has the look of an Eddie Murphy flop. With Journey I have some questions: Is this in 2D as well as 3D, or is it with everything showing you get the glasses? Further, is it in IMAX?
bob_barron Posted July 7, 2008 Report Posted July 7, 2008 Journey will be in 2D and 3D, with the 3D being at a higher price. I assume you get the glasses. It won't be in IMAX since Batman comes out July 18. Meet Dave looks awful, and I don't know why anyone would see it, but you can say that about most Eddie Murphy comedies. The guy's a draw.
RedJed Posted July 7, 2008 Report Posted July 7, 2008 I would have to think Hancock takes a fall, and hard, in the next few weeks. I can't see it getting solid word of mouth. I went and saw it over the weekend and really, the movie leaves one feeling like you kind of wasted an hour and a half, compared to alot of the other summer blockbusters this year. The story just wasn't tight and strong enough to really hook me, things seemed a bit disjointed and really not explained fully, although maybe I just missed a few points here and there. But it just came across like a very loose script, and the backstory of Hancock himself wasn't very "wow" whatsoever (nor was Theron's backstory either, or the both of them). All in all I guess the action was pretty well done, but this just camr across as the biggest thrown together shit I've seen in quite some time, at least in comparison to other CGI extravaganza type films. Gave me the same feeling 10,000 BC gave me after I left the theater, just wasn't very entertained.
Craig Th Posted July 8, 2008 Author Report Posted July 8, 2008 Meet Dave looks awful, and I don't know why anyone would see it, but you can say that about most Eddie Murphy comedies. The guy's a draw. Not really.
bob_barron Posted July 8, 2008 Report Posted July 8, 2008 His average film makes $104 million. How does that refute anything I said? He's had 13 100 million dollar films in his career, which is third all time. And you're saying Eddie's not a draw?
