I figured over 100 million for Hancock given the holiday weekend and the fact it opened on Wednesday, and its Will Smith and a super hero movie on the 4th of July.

I finally saw the trailer for "Mongol", and it's now in my "must watch" list with "Dark Knight", "Hellboy II", and "Mother of Tears." Speaking of which, has anyone seen MOT yet?

Hellboy is a niche flick, no way its going to do more than say..35 million which wont be enough for #1. Journey to the Center of the Earth will get more than Hellboy.

Just noticed I was wrong. Toy Story 2 also had a bigger second week drop than Wall-E (51.6%) However that was actually it's third week, as it opened limited for its first week.

 

On a side-note, I really want to see Wall-E, but haven't had time to yet. Maybe next weekend.

 

Edit: and in searching that, I also just found out that they're releasing a 3D version of Toy Story 2 in 2010?!

I saw MOT a while back. It is a good movie, but if you are looking for classic Argento, you aren't going to get it here. It was a good ending to a a great series. Not his best film, but far from his worst. I enjoyed it.

I mostly made the Hellboy 2 vs. Hancock comparison due to it being the superhero genre. I'm not really sure how Hellboy will do vs. Journey to the Center of the Earth. It's possible that they will both make similar money.

 

Anyone else find the placement of Hellboy 2's release a bit peculiar? It's being released 1 week after Hancock and the week before Dark Knight. Wouldn't it have a better chance if it was released in the fall? Hellboy seems more like a fall/winter movie to me.

Journey will be helped out by inflated ticket prices, but I think 3-D can only get you so far. Who cares to see this film in 2-D?

 

Meet Dave will probably have a good opening weekend because it's Eddie, but then sink from there.

 

Hellboy will probably do in the 20s-30s, and I think Hancock will have a big fall. I see top 5 being:

 

1) Hancock

2) Hellboy

3) Meet Dave

4) Wall-E

5) Journey

 

Of course, this means the top 5 will probably be totally the opposite!

I'm not really sure why it's coming out in the middle of the summer either. The first one didn't light the box office on fire and I just don't see Hellboy being a huge draw. I'm going but that's because I liked the first one and I think this one is just going to be an improvement.

I own the first Hellboy and I tell yah....I kinda hated that movie. It was pretty freaking bad to me. Don't know why...it just...was. I have no intrest in seeing the second one honestly.

Guillermo Del Toro is a really good director but I don't know if most of the material he has done has matched his actual talent. And yes I know Pan's Labyrinth got massive acclaim, but I have to admit I wasn't terribly into it.

 

Bob, as far as Meet Dave goes, I can't see that doing anything. It just has the look of an Eddie Murphy flop. With Journey I have some questions: Is this in 2D as well as 3D, or is it with everything showing you get the glasses? Further, is it in IMAX?

Journey will be in 2D and 3D, with the 3D being at a higher price. I assume you get the glasses. It won't be in IMAX since Batman comes out July 18.

 

Meet Dave looks awful, and I don't know why anyone would see it, but you can say that about most Eddie Murphy comedies. The guy's a draw.

I would have to think Hancock takes a fall, and hard, in the next few weeks. I can't see it getting solid word of mouth. I went and saw it over the weekend and really, the movie leaves one feeling like you kind of wasted an hour and a half, compared to alot of the other summer blockbusters this year. The story just wasn't tight and strong enough to really hook me, things seemed a bit disjointed and really not explained fully, although maybe I just missed a few points here and there. But it just came across like a very loose script, and the backstory of Hancock himself wasn't very "wow" whatsoever (nor was Theron's backstory either, or the both of them). All in all I guess the action was pretty well done, but this just camr across as the biggest thrown together shit I've seen in quite some time, at least in comparison to other CGI extravaganza type films. Gave me the same feeling 10,000 BC gave me after I left the theater, just wasn't very entertained.
