Discussion: Possible DC Universe Movies

Recommended Posts

Here's another article that has some more information.

This quote:

"Like the recent Batman sequel -- which has become the highest-grossing film of the year thus far -- Mr. Robinov wants his next pack of superhero movies to be bathed in the same brooding tone as "The Dark Knight." Creatively, he sees exploring the evil side to characters as the key to unlocking some of Warner Bros.' DC properties. "We're going to try to go dark to the extent that the characters allow it," he says. That goes for the company's Superman franchise as well."

really remindes me of when Watchmen and Dark Knight Returns came out and were so successfull that every comic book immediatly had to be 'dark' and 'angsty.' Which of course led to the scores and scores of shitty books that permiated the 90s and almost killed the industry.

Superman as 'dark and brooding' is a fucking terrible idea by the way.

I'm just thankfull their pathetically stupid Justice League concept isn't going to happen.

I actually don't mind the idea of a Superman reboot, because if there is a character who needs a more edgy makeover, its him. In the reboot, lets have Lex Luthor with other villains that Superman can actually fight though, like Brainiac or Bizarro. I agree with ZGangsta though, I don't want Superman to be as dark as Batman in tone, but maybe in terms of violence.

I like how they say "highest grossing film of the year thus far" as if anything were going to out-gross it.

Hey I wouldn't count out College. If any movie has a shot at beating TDK, it's that.

Yeah...if they do a Superman reboot...let's get some other villains BESIDES Lex in there. I mean, for ones that can fight Superman, there are:

Brainiac

Bizarro

Parasite (if you use his Superman: TAS form)

Doomsday (Last resort)

Darkseid (same)

Livewire (a stretch, sure)

Kryptonite Man

Mongul

Cyborg (Minus the dressing and looking like Superman stuff of the comics)

and I'm sure there's more.

Oh...a suggestion some friend of mine has had for a while...

Just take the cast from Smallville and put them into movies...with Clark actually donning the uniform.

As I never got around to watching Smallville, I don't know how well that would work.

Thanks, now I just threw up over my work computer.

Like I said, I never watched Smallville, so I didn't know how well or not it would have worked.

Not at all.

If they want to do a darker, edgier Superman movie, I'd say the best bet is eitehr Bizaro or Brainiac. Doomsday would be too much for a single movie, and Luthor is played out. A Bizaro story could get a nice Frankenstein-ish vibe going for it.

Using Tom Welling and Michael Rosenbaum would have worked if "Smallville" would have lasted one or two seasons which built to a movie.

Now the show has been on for too long and using the cast would make the film come off as an overly expensive TV movie.

I think people are taking the "dark" thing the wrong way and doesn't imply that Superman will be grim n' gritty.

Here is the last paragraph from the original article

Many of the studio's directors credit Mr. Robinov for taking Warner Bros.' films in a darker and deeper direction. Christopher Nolan, who directed "Batman Begins" and "The Dark Knight," says Mr. Robinov "really encouraged the logic of the villain" from "Batman Begins." That led to focusing heavily on the Joker in the sequel. "At the script stage, Jeff really wanted us to be very clear on the Joker's lack of purpose," he says.

So I assume that by dark he means he wants the story and the villains to be complex and intimidating.

They need to use the dickish Lex billionaire/scientist and have Lex or Luthor Corp. be directly/indirectly responsible for the creation of such villains as Bizarro/Parasite/Metallo. (Just like the Animated Series)

Question for Brainiac in the movie: Which Brainiac?

As I don't know the comics versions that well, I'd say find SOME way...if this is a complete reboot of the series...to make his origin similar to the one from the Animated one.

That way, for the movie, all Krypton scenes can be done in brief flashbacks throughout the movie.

Bryan Singer wanted to do a darker, more action packed, larger scale sequel to Superman Returns featuring an enemy like Braniac, so I wonder if WB will let him do his Man of Steel movie. They did say they were open to Singer coming back if he was on board with their change in tone.

I do think replacing Routh would be a big mistake though.

Replacing Routh doesn't really matter, because I don't think people are going to have fits over that. I do think Brainiac and Bizarro will be villains along with Luthor in the next movie though, since they had them planned for the Superman Returns sequel. I don't think Warner Bros. is making the next DC movies dark and gritty, but just more realistic and serious. Thats the vibe I had from the new Batman movies, make these characters seem like they can exist in the real world.

I wish WB (and other movie companies) would quit being pussies about the whole reboot bullshit. It would be easier if BETTER sequels were made and I just hope The Dark Knight will inspire The Man of Steel to be such.

I just hope we don't get the origin story again. I can understand wanting to ignore what happened in the last film, but we've already had basically the perfect Superman origin in the Richard Donner version. We've seen it already. And it will inevitably lead to a competition with the previous version, which the new version will lose unless WB has found a way to bring Christopher Reeve and Marlon Brando back from the dead. It worked for Batman, Bond, etc. because those were origins that weren't shown on screen before. They were already in the prime of their career from the beginning of the franchise.

Well, there are certain things about Superman's origin they didn't tell in the first movie, such as him getting his power from sunlight, but otherwise, they pretty much told it all. It will probably be an origin thats told in about 5 minutes or so, then they move on.

First of all, if they don't do some sort of origin, people will think it's a sequel to Superman Returns.

Best way to do the origin is to just start the movie with the crash landing in Smallville... then roll the credits and start the movie with adult Clark arriving in Metropolis. Pepper a flashback or two in there, and done.

After Superman Returns, I am DONE being beholden to a 30 year old movie. I don't care if Donner's film did it already. Frankly the "post-crisis" and TAS Superman was in a lot of ways, different from the Donner movies.

It wasn't as good as the Batman one, but in of itself, it was quite good. People who like Superman better than Batman as a character will like it.

The depictions of Clark/Superman, Lois, Lex Luthor, and Jimmy were all really iconic and pitch-perfect. It would be a great starting point for a new Superman movie.

Id love to see Toyman (the S:TAS version) appear in a film - even if hes only in it for three minutes and only to be caught by Superman. Ever since I saw the "Fun and Games" episode, I have fell in love with Toyman.

Speaking of Timm's animated series - I'd like to post two of my favorite scenes from the New Batman Adventures (ironically enough from the same episode - "Over The Edge"):

...and later in the episode:

Man, I totally forgot how cool that "Over the Edge" episode was. Come to think of it, I actually liked Bane in the animated series better than the one from the comics, as I liked how he went after Batman when he was healthy, instead of waiting for him to be tired mentally and physically.

First of all, if they don't do some sort of origin, people will think it's a sequel to Superman Returns.

That will happen anyways. They thought that about Batman Begins & The Incredible Hulk too and they did retell the origin, or at least reshow in the case of TIH.

Now I have no problem with a revamp or a reboot or whatever, but what I don't want is another film where we spend much of the film on an origin story and we don't even see Superman for the first 40 minutes or so. That story has been done, and it has been the only Superman story that has actually been done well on film. There is so much more they can do with the character, and it doesn't solve the big problem people had with Superman Returns which is that there wasn't enough action in it. People aren't going to get that if much of the film is spent on Clark Kent learning about his powers.

If what we are getting is essentially a remake of STM, I'm not going to even bother watching it.

We will probably have Krypton blowing up told in about 5 minutes, and then he lands on Earth, and is found by the Kents, and thats told in about 5 minutes, and then he becomes a reporter, and then becomes Superman, and battles Luthor and Brainiac. I think this would be the right movie to do.

I think I've said it before, but I want him already in Metropolis battling crime while an aware and increasingly corrupt Lex begins his attempts to regain control of his city. I see no need for a straight origin story either.

Almost everybody knows Superman's origin and since it was almost done properly on screen by Donner (although I never did understand why they killed off Pa Kent. I don't remember that happening in the comics), what's the fucking point of doing it again?

Just have Superman: The Man of Steel pick up where Superman Returns left off and have Superman fight Braniac, simple as that.

Come to think of it, I actually liked Bane in the animated series better than the one from the comics, as I liked how he went after Batman when he was healthy, instead of waiting for him to be tired mentally and physically.

Totally agree! :headbang:
