The Magic Is In The Hole!

I don't think you can really compare any sort of major chain coffee with an independent shop, ever, if you're looking for flavor. That said, I distinctly remember the Starbucks I worked at in Miami having infinitely worse coffee than Dunkin' Donuts, but it depends on the coffee. The thing I do like about Starbucks is at least they seem to try to make an effort to look like they're producing quality stuff, and I don't mind their coffee, iced. Most of their coffee is not very good straight though, but you can tell the difference between them and DD right away. Go to a *$ and check out the types of coffee they have listed. All sorts of kinds, from different regions, and all that. Dunkin Donuts has usually like, one kind of coffee and then a bunch of flavored ones. Which, if you are a serious coffee drinker, is a sign of bad coffee.

About the only thing I'll go to *$ for here in Portland is if there isn't a local shop open and close by (rarity) and I would like an iced coffee and/or a breakfast sandwich. That's one great thing they've done lately, is those breakfast sandwiches and wraps. The spinach and cheese one is fucking awesome.

I think you probably could probably do a comparison, as I've gone to some mom and pops that had coffee that I would describe as hotel-level, and others where the coffee was great. But it makes more sense to do that comparison locally rather than the national/regional comparisons we've been mostly doing in this thread.

Shipley's Do-Nuts (a Houston original) is far better than Krispey Kreme or Dunkin's...and you can get donuts / coffee for under 2 bucks too.

Oh, if we're talking about any donut/bakery place then MacArthur's around here trumps anything else I've had. But I can't stand Krispy Kreme, so Dunkin' Donuts, to which I'm neutral, wins by default.

Is it solely based on Long Johns, or do you seriously not like Krispy Kreme warm glazed donuts?

Shipley's has some good traditional donuts, but their coffee is by far the worst I've ever had at a chain store - I would describe that as hotel-level (by which I mean the crap you get for free in your room) as well.

Dunkin Donuts are shitty except for the particularly cakey ones, like the toasted coconut or old-fashioned. KK krushes them on every other front.

There was a Krispy Kreme in Charlottesville my first two years in college, and it closed. I don't know how that's possible--it's a college town, and you can't tell me that drunk college kids aren't psyched about donuts in the middle of the night or the morning after. I remember one night when my roommates and I bought two boxes at midnight, a gallon of milk, and lived like kings for the next 40 minutes. Maybe it just needed to be walking distance from the population center instead of a short drive.

I was inspired by this.

I was hung over this morning, and I'm waiting at the bus stop when I just suddenly say "Fuck this." I call my work and tell them I can't come in because my cousin killed herself and I'm emotionally devastated. I then go to the store and bought some cinnamon rolls, a gallon of milk and a box of Cinnamon Toast Crunch, went home and consumed all of this while watching porn and chatting online with girls about comic books. Living like a king is right... damn hell ass king!

I can't remember feeling that good in forever unless I'm cumming in someone.

It's mostly just the long johns, since they're the only donut I really like. The glazed donuts are unremarkable.

When I used to work at the Four Points by Sheraton at home the house coffee was Seattle's Best. Seriously one of if not the worst coffee ever made.

For a chain coffee shop, I like Timothy's. Second Cup is ok.

I'm not a coffee connaissseur and I think its only available on the Eastern Seaboard but the worst coffee is easily New England Coffee. It seems like the choice of brand for high school cafeterias and third rate hotels everywhere. McDonalds used to use it for their coffee for a while around here before they replaced it with Newman's Own. Terrible stuff. Just awful.

I just like that there is a different doughnut shop at nearly every major intersection in the Valley. Most of them have Thai Iced Tea, which I now like so much that I consider a shop without it to be not worth going to. All Japan has is Mister Donut, which apparently used to be in the US. It's not that great, but good for you if you want green tea or curry doughnuts.

The Krispy Kreme in Van Nuys closed, by the way. Weird how fast the novelty wears off, because there was a huge line at that place the first week it opened.

WHAT?! You're shitting me! Oh, god. Awful. That place was a cornerstone of my early post high school years. At least I hope the Tommie's by the Budweiser factory is still open.

I remember there was this one lady who worked at that Krispy Kreme named Teresita Po- surliest fucking Filipina I've ever met. I don't know how many free boxes of donuts I got on account of her being a total cunt.

I went to a DD on my last trip to the States last month, and it was all kinds of bad. I can't figure out how Tim's hasn't completely taken over around the border yet.

Tim's has been in Buffalo forever, but just moved to Rochester a few years ago. Now there's one every two to three miles on any semi-important suburban road.

I used to work at a DD eastbound on the Thruway. It was hell whenever the Sox played at the Jays for a weekend series and all the Massholes stopped on the way home. They had the entire menu and prices memorized, and were pissed off everything was like 25 cents more expensive because travel plazas always jack up the prices.

LOL.

I've been to DD in Salem a few years back. The coffee at the Days Inn I believe was horrible, so I went across the street to grab a coffee.

The hotel coffee was much better.
