The Upcoming Shows/Rumored Fights Thread

Recommended Posts

I messaged Mik about doing this a while back and I supposed in a battle of the "Who is Lazier" contest Mik is the winner. This is going to stay pinned at the top of the folder and when it comes time to making an official thread for whatever show the contents will be transferred into it.

The whole idea behind this is that we get lots of random posts in CWDWAT and others that kinda get lost in the shuffle so this will keep the discussion surrounding certain fights/shows contained until the events are given the green light. If it's at all possible try and mention which fights are rumored and which fights are close to being signed or are official. If you're adding a fight to an event just do a copy/paste job and put the fight being added in bold so it catches whomever is reading the threads eye.

Clarification on this thread:

1) Use this thread for fights when a card isn't even close to finalized yet. Lesnar/Couture would have been a great example. If BJ Penn is going to defend his WW title against Thiago Alves at UFC 95 but that's the only fight known, DO NOT start a thread. Put it here. Once all the details come out then we'll move all discussion from this thread to that one. I'd say there needs to be at least 4-5 bouts announced before an event has a thread. Also - please don't start an event thread more then two months out.

2) As such - this thread will probably remain a very small thread because most of the posts will be moved out of it.

I'll try my best to steer all discussion into the appropriate places.

On that note would it be worth it to post a small "Forum Rules" thread? I only ask because people may not read every detail in regards to not knowing what certain threads are for. Something like....

- No flaming

- If you're going to criticize something, be prepared to back it up

- Spoiler tagging live events/tape delay events that won't air until 24 or 48 hours later

- Can only make an official thread for a show when it's less then 2 months away

Maybe we should just police that ourselves... we get new posters so infrequently. My only concern with starting one is that the pinned threads are starting to pile up.

Double KO via GSP run in and delivering an Ong Bak-esque double flying knee to The Matt's.

And then Penn runs in and RNC's GSP, making him cry like a baby, which would declare Penn the King of all WW's!

Small request: no more posts on Ultimate Finales in this thread. They aren't going to get a show thread so the only place I can logically move them is into the season thread. I already did that for this season and the posts that have been in this thread so far, but I think it's perfectly acceptable to discuss the TUF finale in the season thread.

This is like my first post in this forum I think, I'm not really a big fan of MMA, I am however a big Brock fan and have ordered all his matches on PPV. So I have something I wanted to ask more experienced fans. Brock won the championship only 3 fights in his career and is now about to fight to unify the championship with Frank Mir I believe. Here is my question, if Mir is able to beat Brock again as easy as he did last time, or win period. Doesn't this kind of kill the credibility of UFC? Seeing as a guy who was pro wrestler a few short years ago came in and won the title in his 3rd fight in the industry, not to mention he lost his 1st fight in under 2 minutes. I'm not saying he will Kimbo the company, but he is there biggest draw I believe and losing his 4th fight and the championship can't be a good thing for the business. Can it?.

Mir/Lesnar is win/win for the UFC for two reasons

1) Mir wins and completes one of the biggest (if not the biggest) comeback story in MMA history

2) Brock wins and is legitimized as a true champion and the best HW in the UFC

Everything about this. No.

Someone on Long Island says what up?

You know that an upset and comeback are two different things, right?

Serra would have actually needed to be considered a champion in order for his win over GSP to be a true comeback. Huge upset? Absolutely. Comeback? Not even close.

Ok, I get that LOTC. What I'm saying is could Mir bring in buyrates like Lesnar has the potential of doing? If Brock made me become a fan of the genre just off of him alone, I believe and have seen, a lot of other people like myself started watching the product solely based on him, and as long as he's champ I don't see that changing. Now if Mir was to beat him, do you think it is safe to say those same people would lose interest in the product and hurt business? I know Mir has a great story, but is that story going to pay off for UFC like Brock as champ would, I guess is what I'm trying to ask? Could Mir bring in the numbers Brock does? If Brock loses can he still be as big a draw as he is now?

If Brock lost to Mir again, I don't think it would take anything from Brock...depending on how he loses. If he gets caught in another submission, probably not. If he gets his head knocked off and knocked out cold...he will lose some of his mystique. But that's the way of the business...look at Kimbo.

But Brock lost his first match to Mir and still brings in big numbers.

I think him losing his 1st fight could be seen as him being green, nonetheless two fights later he was champion. That gives off the vibe that he has became the best fighter in the company only 3 fights in, If Mir beats him again, he might be seen as a fluke and like you said he might lose some credibility. UFC might lose some credibility also, seeing as a guy who hasn’t really proven himself won the title after winning only 2 fights. Now if he can beat a few challengers the hype is worth it, if the same guy, who beat him his 1st fight, comes back and beat him in his 4th fight, but this time takes the title from him, I don't see how that doesn't kind of hurt the company as a whole.

UFC 98

Matt Hughes vs Matt Serra

George Roop vs Dave Kaplan

Drew McFedries vs James Irvin- Irvin will be making his debut at MW

Is this on PPV? Why the hell is Dave Kaplan on a PPV card? Even it is on the undercard?

A question I was going to ask: If Evans is fighting the winner of Machida-Silva, at what event will that occur? I gotta think it would be 98 since 97 already has Silva-Leites, Liddell-Rua and Sherk-Huerta. But then Rampage has the longer layoff and Evans' camp could push the fight back later.

WEC 40- April, Chicago

Miguel Torres vs Brian Bowles- WEC Bantamweight Title

Jeff Curran vs Joseph Benavidez- BW #1 Contender's Fight

Awesome... I know everyone is on the "Torres is unbeatable" bandwagon, but Bowles will be his toughest test.

Sherdog is reporting that UFC has made an offer to Cro-Cop to return at UFC 99 in Germany. Weird choice of opponents mentioned though, Tito and Machida. Tito is a no-go as he refuses to move up to HW and they're still feeling out Lyoto dependant on how he performs against Silva. Word is that if he impresses he'll be Rashad's first challenge at LHW. If he's boring they'll continue to make him fight without getting a title shot.

The reality is that even with a shorter resume, Bowles should arguably be ranked higher than Torres, as he's defeated a ridiculous ratio of good fighters already, with a number of opponents being comparably better than Torres' best. Bowles is probably the most slept-on fighter in MMA.
