GROUP A

"Build me up Buttercup" by The Foundations

"Ring Of Fire" by Johnny Cash

"8 Miles High" by the Byrds

"I Can't Explain" by The Who

"Hang On Sloopy" by The McCoys [i don't really like either of these songs but I chose this one because fuck Elvis]

"Cupid" by Sam Cooke

"Hair" by The Cowsills

"She's Not There" by The Zombies

"The House Of The Rising Sun" by the Animals

"Remember (Walkin' In The Sand)" by The Shangri-Las ["Sounds of Silence" is probably the worst of Simon & Garfunkle's big singles. Conversely, The Shangri Las rule]

"Bonnie and Clyde" by Serge Gainsbourg & Brigitte Bardot

"She Loves You" by The Beatles

"Waterloo Sunset" by The Kinks

"Incense and Peppermints" by Strawberry Alarm Clock

"Good Vibrations" by Beach Boys

"Folsom Prison Blues" by Johnny Cash

GROUP B

"Eight Days A Week" by The Beatles

"Alone Again Or" by Love [This was a really hard choice. The Sly song should probably win, but I can't bring myself to vote against Arthur Lee]]

"My Way" by Frank Sinatra [Czech's a queer]

"Hey Jude" by The Beatles

"My Girl" by The Temptations

"You Really Got Me" by The Kinks

"Dazed and Confused" by Led Zeppelin

"Fortunate Son" by Creedence Clearwater Revival [i really do not care for "Sloop John B"]

"I Fought The Law" by The Bobby Fuller Four

"A Day in the Life" by The Beatles

"Aquarius/Let The Sunshine In" by the 5th Dimension

"Tous Les Garcons et Les Filles" by Francoisie Hardy

"Daydream Believer" by The Monkees

"Jumpin Jack Flash" by The Rolling Stones

"Brown Eyed Girl" by Van Morrison

"A Change Is Gonna Come" by Sam Cooke ["You Can't Hurry Love" caught kind of a raw deal here]

GROUP C

"Space Oddity" by David Bowie

"Down In The Boondocks" by Billy Joe Royal

"Reflections" by The Supremes

"The Witch" by The Sonics

"Then He Kissed Me" by The Crystals

"Street Fighting Man" by The Rolling Stones

"Crimson and Clover" by Tommy James and the Shondells

"Runaway" by Del Shannon

"Don't Worry Baby" by The Beach Boys

"The Weight" by The Band

"Israelites" by Desmond Dekker

"Time of The Season" by The Zombies

"Heroin" by The Velvete Underground

"God Only Knows" by The Beach Boys [Man, this match up sucks. "Out in the Streets" is better than like half the songs I've already voted for but "God Only Knows" is literally the best song ever written so...]

"Reach Out, I'll Be There" by The Four Tops [Why are there so many fucking Elvis songs in this thing? Elvis sucks]

GROUP D

"Venus in Furs" by The Velvet Underground

"Catch The Wind" by Donovan [These are both kinda lousy]

"I Want You Back" by the Jackson 5 [...and these are both incredible. Ughh]

"(I Know) I'm Losing You" by The Temptations

I just realized that nobody nominated Nico's "These Days." That's kind of a serious omission, I think.

Group A

"Build me up Buttercup" by The Foundations

"Ring Of Fire" by Johnny Cash (The Sonics are a really fun band but I don't know if I'd put any of their songs that I'd put in a Personal Top 100 Songs of the '60s list)

"8 Miles High" by the Byrds

"I Can't Explain" by The Who ("Respect" has been forever soiled to me by this girl in my 7th grade class warbling it every day for like three months. Early Who is pretty awesome)

"Hang On Sloopy" by The McCoys

"Itchycoo Park" byThe Small Faces

"Sunshine Of Your Love" by Cream

"She's Not There" by The Zombies

"The House Of The Rising Sun" by the Animals

"Remember (Walkin' In The Sand)" by The Shangri-Las

"Bonnie and Clyde" by Serge Gainsbourg & Brigitte Bardot (Answer to why there's so many Elvis songs is because Bitchtits Brody nominated a bunch of 'em. I'm not an Elvis hater like most of the board apparently he is but "Are You Lonesome Tonight" is pretty dreadful)

"She Loves You" by The Beatles

"I Heard it Through the Grapevine" by Marvin Gaye

"Incense and Peppermints" by Strawberry Alarm Clock

"Walk Away Renee" by The Left Banke

"In The Year 2525" by Zager and Evans (Lousy matchup- this one wins by a hair 'cause it creeped the fuck out of me back when I was an oldies listening seven year old)

"I Want You Back" by the Jackson 5

"(I Know) I'm Losing You" by The Temptations (Toughest matchup of the round for me)

"In The Midnight Hour" by Wilson Pickett ('nother insanely tough one)

I'll get my votes in a little bit later, but for now I just want to point out that Incense and Peppermints vs Mr. Tambourine Man is totally the toughest match up of the first round.

I just realized that nobody nominated Nico's "These Days." That's kind of a serious omission, I think.

Edit: oh, I was thinking of 'I'll Keep It With Mine'. Moving on.

Overall thoughts: I don't go for motown, and voted for every Elvis song. I'm predicting an all-Beatles final four.

Why are there so many fucking Elvis songs in this thing? Elvis sucks

After this whole thing's over with, you and I are gonna tangle. Elvis Presley is on my list of most fascinating people in the history of the human race. Number 2, behind Genghis Khan, actually.

I'll enjoy the occasional Elvis song, and he is absolutely fascinating (Graceland is super-creepy. I mean, I've seen what happens w/r/t interior decorating when people amass money without amassing any sense of discretion...it usually involves heavier-than-osmium emphasis on Irishness, but this! THIS!), but I feel like for the most part I really had to be there to get my old world rocked. I wouldn't go as far as calling it pretty bad, it just doesn't excite me.

Oh, and remember when you couldn't move two inches without bumping into another fucking instance of that stupid "A Little Less Conversation" remix? Was that the pits or what? I mean, geez, usually when we get sledgehammered with songs like that, they're either really good, really bad, or really fun-bad. Here we were just getting shellacked with C-minus work.

Hardest pick: "Suspicious Minds" over "She's Not There." I only felt okay about it because "Time of the Season" lingers.

I had an especially difficult time choosing between "Hey Jude" and "Crying." I gave the nudge to Orbison because it was my nomination. Perhaps not a good reason, but that's all I got.

I'm sort of in between on Elvis. Fascinating person but indifferent to a lot of his stuff. Weirdly enough, my favorite stuff of his is from the era after the '68 comeback special but before he became a total fat, drug addled bozo (Roughly '68 to '73ish). That last album he recorded in Memphis in '69 is pretty good. IIRC, he wanted to record an album at Stax Studios with Booker T and The M.G.'s backing him up around the same time period but The Colonel nixed it. Up there on the list of greatest albums that never happened.

Oh I'll admit that he's a super-fascinating character, but that doesn't change the fact that most of his music is pretty bad.

What, he isn't "twee" enough, you freakin' goonzer?

Life in the U.K. circa 2002 was pretty rough for you, wasn't it Dan.
