CanadianGuitarist Posted November 27, 2008 Report Posted November 27, 2008 I remember bringing up the Mitsubishi tournament from The Score a year ago when they were determining best team or player performance. In light of the "worst ever" discussion in the NFL thread, I thought I'd mention the current tournament being run, "Best team". Here's the brackets.
USC Wuz Robbed! Posted November 27, 2008 Report Posted November 27, 2008 That's horseshit. How can the 72 win Bulls not win it all?
CanadianChris Posted November 27, 2008 Report Posted November 27, 2008 That's horseshit. How can the 72 win Bulls not win it all? They lost 10 games. TEN. Miami didn't lose any.
USC Wuz Robbed! Posted November 27, 2008 Report Posted November 27, 2008 Oh well whatever. I don't like the 90s Bulls anyways. Just 72 wins out of 82 plus a league championship should look more impressive than 13 wins out of 13 with a national title.
Psycho Penguin Posted November 27, 2008 Report Posted November 27, 2008 I don't think the 72 win Bulls team is the best sports team ever. However, I'd LOVE to see a potential worst sports team ever list. If it wasn't all Clippers vs Clippers.

USC Wuz Robbed! Posted November 27, 2008 Report Posted November 27, 2008 But it was Miami Hurricanes that knocked off the Bulls, not the Dolphins. And everyone SHOULD know the 1985 Bears were superior to the 17-0 Dolphins by miles.

CanadianGuitarist Posted November 28, 2008 Author Report Posted November 28, 2008 I'm a little surprised that the title didn't go to a hockey team (take your pick of a few), given that it was primarily Canadians voting.
USC Wuz Robbed! Posted November 28, 2008 Report Posted November 28, 2008 Probably because none of the hockey teams (except maybe the Miracle on Ice team) were that memorable, at least on a relatively equal level as the other sports' teams. At least in the mainstream.
Your Paragon of Virtue Posted November 28, 2008 Report Posted November 28, 2008 As a Canadian, I take offense to you putting, out of all the possible candidates, the fucking Miracle on Ice squad as the best hockey team. As an intelligent person I'd feel the same way. U.S. Olympic team? Really? With all those Habs, Oilers, Red Wings, etc. teams to choose from?
garfieldsnose Posted November 28, 2008 Report Posted November 28, 2008 But we beat Russia. RUSSIA~! EDIT: Soviet Union. USSR~!

I definitely don't think they were the best team, but since they were the only team to have a movie made of them, that makes them pretty fucking memorable. That said, I'd say the Oilers with Gretzky, Messier, etc probably takes it.

That said, I'd say the Oilers with Gretzky, Messier, etc probably takes it. There have been a number of box sets, historical looks, and made-for-TV movies about the 1972 Summit Series and the Canadian squad. That obviously doesn't compare to a Hollywood movie, but I can name exactly three members of the US team. Off the top of my head, I could name a half-dozen of any great hockey team. You mentioned hockey not being mainstream enough, but it's a Canadian-run tournament: Hockey is as mainstream as it gets. I'm not disputing what a moment the Miracle on Ice was, nor the significance of it, but it's oft-forgotten that it was not for the gold medal - if such a crucial fact is forgotten, that has to be a bit of a blow to the title of "most memorable team". Finally, and this may be semantics more than anything else: Can a team that pulled such a huge upset be considered as the best ever, or even among them?
CanadianChris Posted November 28, 2008 Report Posted November 28, 2008 Finally, and this may be semantics more than anything else: Can a team that pulled such a huge upset be considered as the best ever, or even among them? No, definitely not. That'd be like saying '85 Villanova or '83 NC State were among the greatest teams ever. Greatest stories, yes, but not greatest teams. And 3 members of the Miracle on Ice team is still two more than I can name.
the max Posted November 28, 2008 Report Posted November 28, 2008 Finally, and this may be semantics more than anything else: Can a team that pulled such a huge upset be considered as the best ever, or even among them? CanadianChris Posted November 28, 2008 Report Posted November 28, 2008 Eruzione was the only one I could recall. I might have gotten Broten if I was pressed.
USC Wuz Robbed! Posted November 28, 2008 Report Posted November 28, 2008 I'm so sorry I disparaged the great name of hockey by throwing out Miracle on Ice. Jesus. I'll be first to admit I lost all interest in hockey once Gary Bettman and Bob Goodenow caused the league to shut down. So feel free to plug in any random "best hockey team evar~!" in my post where Miracle on Ice occupies currently.
garfieldsnose Posted November 28, 2008 Report Posted November 28, 2008 Canadians have a short leash. Not like any Canadian team won the Cup since 1993! Oops! Did I open a can of worms!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!!!?!?!@!?#@#>@!#e.2e
CanadianGuitarist Posted November 28, 2008 Author Report Posted November 28, 2008 Eruzione and Craig were the two players, along with Herb Brooks.

For hockey teams- what about the 2002 Red Wings?

CanadianGuitarist Posted November 28, 2008 Author Report Posted November 28, 2008 For hockey teams- what about the 2002 Red Wings? They'd be in my top 5 for hockey. I still see (in no order) the '04 Canadian World Cup Team, late 70's Habs, mid 80's oilers, and early 80's Isles in there. The '76 Canada Cup team has to be close, too.
Psycho Penguin Posted November 28, 2008 Report Posted November 28, 2008 The Oilers of the 1980s were one of the greatest sports dynasties of all time.
CanadianChris Posted November 28, 2008 Report Posted November 28, 2008 For hockey teams- what about the 2002 Red Wings? That's a good choice. I'd go with the 1977 Canadiens, though. 60-8-12 in the regular season, 12-2 in the playoffs.
USC Wuz Robbed! Posted November 28, 2008 Report Posted November 28, 2008 I actually like the 85-86 Oilers. It's only a shame they didn't win it all. Though they redeemed themselves the next year.
Guest Czecherbear Posted November 28, 2008 Report Posted November 28, 2008 But it was Miami Hurricanes that knocked off the Bulls, not the Dolphins. You can't tell me a minor league team is superior to a major league team, unless you're a total dipshit. The '96 Bulls could beat a college team at football if they wanted to, I betcha.

That's not really, or shouldn't be, the context of the tournament though. It's all relative. Edit: I smell another "Mundane sports achievements" agrument brewing.

"Comes down to voters mindset really". Did you miss that part? What's with the name calling? Some people (who are clearly of higher intelligence like yourself) will vote for the latest dominant pro team because they are clearly better than the teams of older days. College teams can never be good because they can't beat pro teams, either. Then there are "dipshits" who vote for who dominated their sport and was the best at the sport they played. I guess they are total idiots because everyone knows professionals are superior and a 12 man basketball team would beat a bunch of skilled college football kids in a football game.
Guest Czecherbear Posted November 28, 2008 Report Posted November 28, 2008 Then relative to their respective competition, the NBA team in question established supremacy at a higher level of basketball than did the college football team in question, inasmuch as the Bulls were the best in a league of professionals who are the very best in the world at what they do. The Hurricanes were the best developmental-tier football team among hundreds of teams with players spanning from prospective professionals to student athletes who happen to be good at football. I don't know. You tell me. That was just facetious chest-thumping about the Bulls, though. Duh.
