What would you do with 100 Grand?

Recommended Posts

http://www.joystiq.com/2008/12/01/redstone...for-about-100k/

The week begins with more bad news for financially-hobbled Midway. Just days after finding itself on the business end of a delisting notice from the New York Stock Exchange, the company's majority stockholder, Sumner Redstone, is now preparing to row away from the sinking ship entirely. According to the Wall Street Journal, Redstone and his holding company, National Amusements, hope the separation will help breathe new life into the firm's suffocating $1.6 billion in debt.

Redstone is expected to inflict sell his 87% controlling stake in the troubled publisher to private investor Mark Thomas -- obviously someone who enjoys a good fixer-upper -- for the bargain basement price of about $100,000, or $0.0012 a share, well below Midway's previous closing price of .38 a share. The WSJ also points out that the sale is but one point in what has become a highlight reel of bad investments for Redstone, who sunk millions into Midway in hopes of the company's heroic return, only to see it do a fatality on his bank account.

It's being speculated that he wants to buy it just to liquidate it. In which case, if he sells it off piece by piece, there's gotta be some franchise (or IP, should i say) we can all pitch in and pick up. Marble Madness? Primal Rage? Or maybe...just maybe...dare I say...REVOLUTION X?

Itd be funny to buy Mortal Kombat and TNA from them just if only to do the inevitable Mortal Kombat vs TNA game. Not to mention we could do it ala WCW vs the World, Revenge, etc and have complete ripoff of Japanese and mexican wrestlers.

That's pretty insane!

On a similar note, I promised on a messageboard, and actually meant it, if I won the £100 million EuroMillion draw a month ago, I would sink some money into getting the Ghostbuster's game distributed haha.

However, if they did start to sell Midway IPs off do they still hold name value? When I personally think of Midway, I think of a company I was fond of 10+ years ago. Yet, they seemed to get left behind in the first wave of 'next gen' PS1 and co.

Marble Madness would do well on something like the DS, did they ever release it?

Oh man Acclaim, I remember when they used to make good games... or just games for that matter. So its very possible the next wave of 'Next Gen' consoles will just have In House developments, EA and Ubisoft to look forward too? Oh and Activision.

I always wondered whether the VG boards needed a mod.

On topic: I remember when Acclaim went out of business... the rights to Iggy's Wreckin' Balls went for $3000. Of course, that was for the rights to publish the Nintendo 64 game. In case of a Midway firesale, I call dibs on The Suffering.

Does anybody even miss Acclaim? For me it was good riddance. They set back PS1 Wrestling games a good 10 years back. I still cant believe the garbage they put out while THQ/AKI was just dominating. Who wants to press UP UP Down Down Square Triangle Left Circle to pull off a bodyslam?

Theatre of Magic pinball all the way. I thought Midway also did Scared Stiff, but I guess not. I knew for sure they did Magic since the machine would start displaying ads for Mortal Kombat 3 and possibly the movie I think.

If we were to redo NBA Jam (not that a classic should be redone, just look at the remake of Psycho), can we do it like Blitz: The League?

I'd actually be down with that.

I think I'm going to get a couple hundred shares of Midway now that it's trading at $0.26 a share. I think this thing can turn around, dammit.

I never cared for basketball games (not really a basketball fan at all), but I loved NBA Jam. Played the heck out of the SNES version. Had the Game Boy version of NBA Jam TE...wasn't very good, but I still played it a lot.
