Mecha Mummy Posted December 30, 2008 Report Posted December 30, 2008 Gorillaz. Dammit, I was hoping they'd slip under the radar, they were probably my next pick. And Jesus, I didn't even think of Sly & The Family Stone. Brutal one-two punch there.
Twisted Intestine Posted December 30, 2008 Report Posted December 30, 2008 The Mighty Mighty Bosstones
Just John Posted December 31, 2008 Author Report Posted December 31, 2008 Good choice. I was hoping I could pick them up later. Anyway, I'll head to the softer side of things... Toto
Darthtiki Posted December 31, 2008 Report Posted December 31, 2008 Sorry for the delay, but my next pick is The Specials
Jebus Posted January 1, 2009 Report Posted January 1, 2009 It's been almost 24 hours since the last pick so... Muse
Mecha Mummy Posted January 1, 2009 Report Posted January 1, 2009 ... oh dammit. Usually I catch this sort of stuff even when not PMed since I track draft threads I'm in but this time I slipped up. Anyway, since Dethklok and Gorillaz have set a precedence for fictional bands that have actually released albums and tours, and I keep missing out on drafting Nigel Tufnel somewhere... Spinal Tap
TheOriginalOrangeGoblin Posted January 1, 2009 Report Posted January 1, 2009 This one may not count but I think it should since other bands chosen have pushed the "rock" label as well: Bob Marley and the Wailers and Blue Rodeo
Just John Posted January 1, 2009 Author Report Posted January 1, 2009 I think Bob Marley might push it a little too far.
TheOriginalOrangeGoblin Posted January 1, 2009 Report Posted January 1, 2009 I'd argue Sly and the Family Stone pushes it further but it's all good. Instead I'll take: Whitesnake
TheOriginalOrangeGoblin Posted January 2, 2009 Report Posted January 2, 2009 Ok, I'm at a loss as to how Parliament Funkadelic qualify and Bob Marley and the Wailers don't...
Youth N Asia Posted January 2, 2009 Report Posted January 2, 2009 At a loss my ass. There's still a band out there that amazingly hasn't been picked yet
Just John Posted January 2, 2009 Author Report Posted January 2, 2009 Ok, I don't wanna be a band nazi here because ultimately, keeping these things moving is more important than arguing what qualifies and what doesn't, but we really need to stray away from picking funk bands as rock bands. I'm going to make Nighthawk re-pick. As a litmus test for the future, if Wiki doesn't have some type of rock or metal listed as one genre of music for a given band, it ain't rock in here. That should keep it fairly open, but does provide clear limits. Oh, and I pick Foreigner
Youth N Asia Posted January 2, 2009 Report Posted January 2, 2009 Sly and the Family Stone are in the ROCK AND ROLL hall of fame :-P
Just John Posted January 2, 2009 Author Report Posted January 2, 2009 Sly and the Family Stone are fine. It's Parliament Funkadelic and Bob Marley that are under review (and being overturned).
The Niggardly King Posted January 2, 2009 Report Posted January 2, 2009 But they're listed as one of the most influential "rock" bands in a lot of publications. Same for Bob Marley and The Wailers, and Sly and The Family Stone. They're in the damn Rock & Roll Hall of Fame!
Just John Posted January 2, 2009 Author Report Posted January 2, 2009 The R/R HOF isn't a great barometer becuase they induct a lot of influential people who wouldn't generally be classified under rock. Aretha Franklin is in the R/R HOF, and I've never seen her work labeled as "rock." We gotta have a cutoff somewhere, otherwise this slope's gonna get slipperier and slipperier.
Jebus Posted January 2, 2009 Report Posted January 2, 2009 The Rock N Roll HOF is pretty much the "Music in General HOF". If being in the RnR HOF qualifies you as a rock band, then my next pick will be Grandmaster Flash & the Furious Five.
