A few things: I don't get Fleet Foxes at all. To me, it's boring noise that makes The Decemberists look like the most rocking band in the universe. Glad to see "Ready for the Floor" so high... I love that song. I think the album was overrated but that's a great song. Beyonce at 23 is actually good too. Like "My Love" a few years ago... or "Umbrella"... sometimes a pop song is that good. I usually think Beyonce is garbage but "Single Ladies" is a damn good song. The rest wow... I haven't even heard of half of it.

I liked Mirrored and this song is pretty OK, but really, it has the same drum beat as "The Beautiful People." How did that not hurt its indie cred?

Constructive Summer by the Hold Steady is a really good song, but "Slapped Actress" is the best song off their album this year.

 

I also really enjoy Time to Pretend by MGMT. I don't love the band, but that's a good song.

 

But as said above, this list is blah at best.

The list seems pretty wonky on rules for eligibility. I guess "Flashing Lights" is on here because the single/video didn't come out till this year, even though the album was out and the song was all over radio in 2007. Don't understand why that would be there, given that they use the same rationale for keeping "Paper Planes" off. I have no reason to care, except that I like my lists to be governed uniformly, gosh darn it.

"Blind" is pretty sweet, but not my favorite song of the year ("Flashing Lights" and "A Milli" are better, and I wasn't even wild about Carter III. Hell, while I'm at it, Portishead's "We Carry On" and Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds' "We Call Upon The Author" are better) Fleet Foxes are overrated.

There are a couple of better songs off that album (I think "Graveyard Girl" and "We Own the Sky" are tops), but yeah, it's purty good. The video is also good for all your rollerskating and awkward high school lesbian metaphor needs:

I find the melody of "White Winter Hymnal" brilliant, the lyrics are above average, but the arrangement is just woefully poor. I know that means I'm sorta missing the point of Fleet Foxes, but that doesn't make all that bearded bullshit suck any less, sorry.

 

Not that the two bands are really related, but now's as good a time as any to mention that Los Campesinos is straight-up crappy.

Los Campesinos is ok in a very "livejournalesque-look-at me-stream-of-consciousness" kind of way. But the songs are peppy and every once in awhile the lyrics are clever enough to cause me to crack a smile. "International Tweecore Underground" is my favorite song of theirs.

 

I could have saved you the trouble of listening to them ahead of time, Czech... I figured it wouldn't be your thing.
