Inspired by the topic of a similar name in the books/comics folder. I shall start Disgusting: Braindead/dead-alive: By the director of LoTR, a very funny and extraordinarily gory movie. Must be seen in the unrated version. Also a romantic comedy that is sweeter than most of the pap Hollywood dumps on us. Would probably acutally make a good date movie if you know your date is a sick fucker (like, presumably, you.) Riki-Oh! Chop-socky movie that is chock full of gore. Quite funny as well. it's essentially a live-action Fist of the North Star. The Gates of Hell: Good Fulci horror movie. Quite gross. Features one of the goriest scenes I have ever seen. Won't spoil it for you here. Disturbing: Ichii the Killer: This director's knownfor making avante-garde crazy ass movies, in which his aim is to essentially break every taboo known to man. And, probably, animals. Fucked up movie in which two sadomasochistic killers are the 'heroes' the gore would be amusingly over-the-top if the themes weren't so goddamn disturbing. I don't know what the hell the point of the movie is, but it DOES stay with you. I'll give it that. Suicide club/circle: (First of all Suicide Circle is such a better name.) The first scene features happy, chirpy music while dozens of high-school Japanese girls silently hold hands, happily count down and jump in front of a trainl. The resulting gore is horrific. This movie has several powerful scenes that I think were actually cheapened by the insane gore. Gets completely derailed when it features a Frank N. Furter-ish character that likes to sing hair-metal love ballads while his followers rape and murder young girls. oh boy! Honorable mentions: Jacob's Ladder, Fantastic Planet.

I would reccomend The Shins. Either album is good. You seem to have open horizons, Sonic Youth is great. I would buy Goo or their new album Sonic Nurse, maybe Dirty as well. Then if you like it, Daydream Nation and Murray Street, which are more abstract, but awesome. If you like the Automator, get Deltron 3030 if you don't have it. It's tremendous. The Clash's London Calling is one of those albums that should be in pretty much everyone's library. Tremendous stuff. You probably at least know of Bjork, I'd download some of her stuff from Homeogenic, because it's a great album that got no radio play. You might enjoy the first Unkle album quite a bit. It has Dj Shadow. If you like DJ Shadow, you might like the Avalnches as well.

Having thought about it, it must be REALLY hard to write an omnipotent hero with an interminable series. While I loved Astro City, pretty much all that had to be said about Samaratin was done in a few issues, and Miracleman couldn't have continued forever. It was a story with a beginning middle and end.

I just searched for it and couldn't find it. I know I've seen it in a clip. In the clip the guy lifts him up for a piledriver really quickly and just throws him forward as far as he can (about a foot) and the guy takes a head bump completely unprotected, except by his own arms.

I think criticisms of Nirvana basically boil down to them being overexposed. The rock world desperately wanted a 'savior' and saw Nirvana as that. That's not their fault. I've never heard enyone talk shit about the Pixies 9though I'm sure that's inviting someone to do just that) because they escaped mass publicity. If someone who's not your cup of tea has their music become ubiquitous, it irks you. In my case it's Alice in Chains. Certainly not a bad band, but I can't listen to them anymore just because they were played SO MUCH. (I'm a seattlite.)

I will say also that it's very possible to have a hero with a high sense of morality who STILL has mental conflict. The previously mentioned Samaratin is a good example of this. He goes to bed and wakes up exhausted, because every second he sleeps or talks or even makes time for a conversation, someone he could help is dying.

Oh, yes. But blood is often the best thing in some of the kicky-punchy matches HHH has. And that's sad. It's a good way to blow off a feud, but why is Evolution involved in maybe 75% of the matches with juicing?

I had the same situation in college. I had a friend move in with me after the first semester. I dunno what your school is like, but mine would force someone on you whether you liked it or not.

You know, the thing is it IS possible to do an uber character and make him interesting. They just barely seem to try with Supes. Miracleman and Samaritan are good examples of this.

I too felt sorry and fearful for Spike in his match versus Mike Awesome. The WCW show where Buff had his neck broken and Big Scott Norton was standing there crying was definitely freaky. When Steph and Shane made that crack about classy Freddie Blassy about to be dead, I really felt sorry for him. Innumerable times I have felt sorry for Flair when he was treated like shit. For Tommy Dreamer when he had to crawl to the back after a match because his back was so fucked. And then when he had to do that horrid Tom Green character. (Yeah way to go WWE. All he was was a mediocre wrestler who busted his ass every da he wrestled, and loved the business. Speaking of, the same for DDP in WWE.)

All of HHH's greatest matches were heavily gimmicked, except the Austin/HHH v Benoit/Jericho. Also, HHH and his Evolution buddies are allowed blood in pretty much all his matches nowadays, which seems to add a star to many people's ratings. Which is dumb.

I remember Angle HATED RVD, so that might be your culprit right there. (Didn't another big guy, Austin? Rock? really like RVD?)

I think we have a better ratio of good modern war epics to bad than historical epics, is because we have numoerous RECORDED histories from those who were there! The more realistic and true to life it is, the better. It keeps writers from going of on ridiculous romantic flights of fancy as they are wont to do even in pretty good historical epics such as Braveheart.

I think it's his voice. He has a horribly annoying voice.

Considering the beautiful games we've seen from the PS later in life, and from PS2 games from talented developers, this should be very powerful. I think that while Square and Konami have been able to wring out amazing graphics from the PS2, many developers found it's dual processors difficult to program for, and just didn't take the time, while I've heard that the X-Box is very simple to program for, and just has straight horsepower, which is why it was so ridiculously expensive for Microsoft to make.

I think the deciding factor for whether a big historical epic will be popular is whom it focuses on, the big guy or the little guy? Everyone wants to root for the underdog. Ben Hur - Yes Ghenghis Khan - No Cleopatra - No Braveheart - Yes Gladiator - Yes Master & Commander - Yes Troy - Middling, and look it focused on everyone. Alexander - No Now, some of these movies that I labelled as successful I don't personally like (Gladiator is VASTLY overrated, as are most epics, IMHO), and some movies based on rulers are GOOD (see Elizabeth.) but for a movie to be accepted by the masses, it can't focus on a ruler on conquerer. Unless he's an American Prez, perhaps.

Ganso bomb as executed by Kawada (has done it twice I believe) is really sick. However, the 'real' Ganso bomb (throwing piledriver) is maybe even worse.

I thought that the 4 horsemen were pretty musch tweeners on the way to full on faceness by the time Jarrett tried to join. And I think he was actually supposed to get over as a face and help make the horsemen faces, but got horrible heat because everyone just hated his character.

Most comic philes are unanimous in their evalutions and love of Spider-Man and especially Batman. What do you think of Supes? I think he's a great iconic character who is tremendously boring in his own comics, but is the ultimate guest star, to play off of whomever's book he's appearing in. your thoughts?

Seconded to Sass's mention of greatest fight. Though that's somewhat off-topic.

I often associate EPMD with Run DMC and the Beasties. Were they putting out albums about the same time? and in that vein of hip-hop, I think paul's Boutique pretty much reigns supreme. It's too bad the Beasties couldn't ever top their sophomore (non-punk) recording. I like what I've beard from Mos Def, so i'll definitely check out black on both sides. Also, could someone recommend me some good Wu-Tang? I've actually not heard much from them, even though a couple of my friends are die-hards. I really like the RZA as Bobby digital album, and of course his stuff on Kill Bill was great. EDIT: And guys, Run DMC is obviously a love 'em or hate 'em band. Let's quit with the angry posts. This is supposed to be a happy thread!
