Well I think that at this juncture, going on four years together for most of us, we've all been around long enough to know who's who and how they'd perform, and can separate popular guys from people who would handle the job well.

Voting for letters, indeed...why not abandon all pretense and just have people vote for the letter first and then have the party appoint the Congressman. We're not voting for people any longer.

And you know, if people are going to complain about who the mods are, why don't we just choose our own mod staff already? If you drop the whole "OKAY THIS BOARD IS NOT A DEMOCRACY MMKAY MY NAME IN RED MEANS I MAKE THE RULES WE DON'T NEED YOUR APPROVAL YOU HAVE NO RIGHTS BORK BORK BORK" thing, and let us decide who should be the glorified janitors, then we can't piss and moan about it, because we chose them. Just have everyone submit a list comprising x amount of posters they think should be the mods, and the people who get the most nominations get the jobs. At the end of the day, it won't lead to dynamic change, since I think almost everyone is happy with Al, Canadian Chick, Treble, Brian, etc. But for the mods that do catch heat from the board, this is a way to make sure they have the same support as everyone else does. Of course, there'd have be some measures to prevent gimmicks and aliases, like a minimum post count and registration date, but I don't think it would be that bad of an idea.

The Yankees have still managed to keep a core: Jeter, Rivera, Williams, Posada, Torre; Mussina's going into a sixth year, Pettitte lasted nine. It's not much, but it's something. I think the Red Sox are just as bad, if not worse, as it pertains to demanding staff and roster purges. I'm thoroughly opposed to salary caps in sports, but watching Boston fans pore over every roster in the majors, going "I want him. Make a 3-way trade. I want him too. Make a 3-way trade. Oh get him too, 3-way trade," as if they can cherry-pick the league as no other club can, has been slightly irritating. Especially given that the farm system is pretty lively, at least compared to New York's.
