You can use Sawyers death as motivation for characters, the significance of an event, or the build up of some other character. So it as a season finale point to be used to kick off the next turn of events would be a good use of a characters death. They could kill him off in an Edgar-esque way with him just saying "Freckles?" and then being gassed while Kate looks on behind a glass wall. They already did that with Charlie last season, though.

I hated my job, but I was comfortable there. I decided I wanted to go back to school full time in September, so I decided to freelance in my field of work. I went on an interview and the president of the company said I would have a job waiting for me, so I quit my job and when I called him up to tell him I was ready to start, he replied with "I think I'll pass. Our schedules aren't really going to work out." Now I've been unemployed for two weeks, I've been hired by one company to do freelance work, but they haven't given me anything yet...so now I think I need to find a part time job in retail. Yikes.
