I believe it, if in fact it's true. Bret - and the Undertaker for that matter - was an established top star, world champion, and main eventer while Austin and Michaels were just on the verge of doing the same during those respective years.
-
I just tried searching for that match and my info states that it took place on 2/16 in Dallas with only Owen's belt on the line.
-
Yeah, by no means is that list 100% accurate or even 50% complete.

Bet it was an interesting interview; Elliot's been pro-WWE for as long as I've listened to DC101. I don't know if they still do it today (out of town at college) but they used Angle's theme song during the morning traffic reports for years. It got to the point where I would be watching Raw, Angle's music would hit, and I would feel the urge to say "We've got traffic backed up on 395 south near Manassas, two accidents in Springfield, blah blah"

Wow, I had never heard that.

King of the Ring 1997 Tourney Question
cawthon777 replied to Danville_Wrestling's topic in General Wrestling
Vader was said to have a broken nose as a result of Ken Shamrock's beating at IYH so Trip filled in. As stated, he wasn't told he could lose via DQ or count-out and thus threatened legal action against the WWF if they didn't let him back in. Yes, that WAS the lamest loophole ever used. -
The KOTR was never mentioned by name but Race's win was was resulted in him being named 'King'. They said he won some tournament but didn't say where, when, or who he beat. Muraco (85), Race (86), Savage (87), Dibiase (88), Santana (89), and Bret (91) were the previous winners.

I think they did imply Sullivan and Woman at least had a relationship beyond manager / wrestler but I doubt the word "married" was ever used.

Matches already taped for Heat - Randy Orton vs. Rosey Maven vs. Chuck Palumbo Not sure if that was all of them or not.
-
HartFan gave me a call from the arena a few minutes ago. Sounds like attendance is pretty bad. The dark matches included Carly Colon and Arch Kincaid.
-
They only need about 4 matches per brand. To build 4 matches over the course of a month should be pretty easy to do.
-
The Rumble did a lot for him, yes, but tossing out Bart Gunn, Kwang, Virgil, and Bob Backlund is a bit different than going 20-minutes with Bret Hart in a world title match.
-
4. Summer Slam is on the 15th.
-
Summer Slam hasn't had more than a month's build since 1998, when we pretty much knew 6 or so weeks beforehand that it would be Austin vs. Taker. And before 98, it hasn't had a ton of build since 1994. This isn't anything new. I expect they'll throw a lot out there tonight to set up the top matches.
-
I'll settle for anyone that can put together a few quality matches and a main event that goes a good 20 minutes without the whole show turning into some overbooked Russo-esque mess.
-
Yes he did and it was used to help explain the association.

That 20-something match MADE people take notice of Diesel. Yes, he had beaten Razor Ramon and won the IC title but it was a screwjob ending to a short match. Remember that he had Bret down and out when Neidhart ran in to protect the title. The average fan could easily argue that the belt was his for the taking. The KOTR bout transformed him from a big guy mid carder into a big guy who was seen as a threat to the world title. Without that high profile match under his belt, I don't know how well Diesel taking the belt in November would have been received.
-
Wasn't the sit-in in response to Vince calling Tyson the toughest man in the world ... or whatever it was ... and Austin took offense to it? So that would have been pre WrestleMania.
-
True, they didn't explain it very well. At first, they alluded to the fact that maybe Ahmed wasn't heel and only joined the Nation to "wake" Taker up and get him to stop following Paul Bearer's orders. Then Ahmed vs. Taker was signed for Canadian Stampede ... which would have been interesting to say the least ... and then came another injury.

I THINK the last Supestars taping was February 97.
-
I think maybe it was implied he was working on behalf of Triple H. Not sure though.

Making a Difference Fatu was around. He was even one of the lumberjacks at the July IYH. ... Not that I would WANT to see Fatu vs. Hakushi lol
-
No Hakushi? Kid / Hakushi was the best non-ladder match of the night.

I disagree about winning WW3 as being a possible opportunity to build a new star. I mean, if they did the 'winner gets Starrcade shot' a la the 98 edition, then they'd have just one month to make them a credible challenger in the eyes of the fans. Compare to the WWE, where the Rumble winner has 2+ months of buildup to put heat on the match. I was referring to the stipulation in 96 and 97 where the winner would get a title shot at SuperBrawl. It didn't happen in 97 because the Giant got his shot at Souled Out instead. And it didn't happen in 98 because of the whold world title vacancy bit, but Hall did get the shot at Uncencored.

You know what ... after taking a look at what I have for Sid at the time, apparently I spoke too soon because he appeared right before and right after Summer Slam. In fact, the 9/11/95 Raw with Sid vs. HBK was taped the day after the PPV. So I don't know why Sid was taken out. Maybe it was a simple "to boost the buyrate".
