  1. Ball State is ranked dead last in strength of schedule and might only be the 3rd best team in the MAC once the season is done as they have yet to play Central and Western Michigan, who they play the next two weeks.
  2. Aww the Congressional Bowl sold it's naming rights and is now the EagleBank Bowl. I'm shocked the St. Petersburg Bowl still hasn't sold theirs as that always seemed like a generic placeholder bowl name. ACC Bowl Tie-ins: BCS/Orange, Chick-Fil-A, Gator, Champs Sports, Music City, Meineke Car Care, Emerald, Humanitarian, EagleBank Locks: Boston College, Florida State, Georgia Tech, Maryland, Miami, North Carolina Bowl Eligible: Virginia Tech, Wake Forest Bubble Teams: Clemson, Duke, N.C. State, Virginia Everyone is technically still alive but highly unlikely Duke or N.C. State win their last two games. The winner of the Clemson/Virginia game this week will become bowl eligible while the loser will have to pull of an upset in a rivalry game the following week. Notre Dame Bowl Tie-ins: Cotton, Gator, Sun Irish barely avoid disaster at the end of the Navy game to become bowl eligible. Should lock up a bid with an easy win against Syracuse this week which will have them on their way to the Gator or Sun Bowl. Upset USC the following week and they will end up in the Cotton Bowl. Big East Bowl Tie-ins: BCS, Gator/Sun, Meineke Car Care, International, Papajohns.com, St. Petersburg Locks: Cincinnati, Connecticut, Pittsburgh Bowl Eligible: South Florida, West Virginia Bubble Teams: Louisville, Rutgers As covered last week the Big East will lose a bid to Notre Dame if they finish 7-5 leaving the conference with five bids. Rutgers crushed a reeling USF team and can become bowl eligible with a win over Army this week which is quite the surprise considering how bad they played the first half of the year. With that in mind, there will be at least one team in this conference needing to find an open bid if they want to go bowling so it is very important to get seven wins. Big Ten Bowl Tie-ins: BCS/Rose (two bids?), Capital One, Outback, Alamo, Champs Sports, Insight, Motor City Locks: Iowa, Michigan State, Minnesota, Northwestern, Ohio State, Penn State Bowl Eligible: Wisconsin Bubble Teams: Illinois The Big Ten's season is over after this week and if Penn State and Ohio State win, they are both on their way to BCS bowls. Illinois needs to win at Northwestern this week or otherwise the Motor City Bowl will become an open bid. Big XII Bowl Tie-ins: BCS/Fiesta (two bids), Cotton, Holiday, Gator/Sun, Alamo, Insight, Independence, Texas Locks: Kansas, Missouri, Nebraska, Oklahoma, Oklahoma State, Texas, Texas Tech Bubble Teams: Colorado There is no scenario where this conference doesn't put two teams in the BCS so you can put them down for nine bids which also locks Kansas up for a bid even they still sit on six wins. With Kansas State and Texas A&M being eliminated from bowl consideration, the Texas Bowl is now an open bid and if Colorado doesn't win at Nebraska in two weeks then the Independence Bowl will also be an open bid. Conference USA Bowl Tie-ins: Liberty, GMAC, Texas, Armed Forces, New Orleans, St. Petersburg Locks: Rice, Tulsa Bowl Eligible: East Carolina, Houston Bubble Teams: Marshall, Memphis, Southern Miss, UTEP Only change was Houston became bowl eligible with a drubbing of Tulsa. Southern Miss scored a big win over East Carolina and now only has to beat an awful SMU team to become bowl eligible. MAC Bowl Tie-ins: Motor City, GMAC, International Locks: None Bowl Eligible: Ball State, Buffalo, Central Michigan, Western Michigan Bubble Teams: Akron, Bowling Green, Northern Illinois The odds of Ball State getting into the BCS are now zilch as they were passed by BYU in the BCS standings. See last week's entry as to why there is a really small chance Ball State could not go bowling but it gets slimmer and slimmer with the the growing number of open bids there will be. Mountain West Bowl Tie-ins: BCS?, Las Vegas, Poinsettia, Armed Forces, New Mexico Locks: Air Force, BYU, TCU, Utah Bubble Teams: Colorado State, UNLV There's a story out there that I don't think has received any attention yet and that is if BYU beats Utah this week, they and not Boise State could end up with the Fiesta Bowl invite. There's nothing in the BCS rules that requires the highest ranked non-BCS conference team to be taken, if there is another eligible non-BCS team who can be chosen. Boise getting passed over for a one loss non-BCS team could be a nice shitstorm. UNLV should become bowl eligible with a win over San Diego State this week while Colorado State will play at Wyoming with a chance to become bowl eligible as well. Popular belief is that the New Mexico Bowl would invite the Rebels over CSU. Pac-10 Bowl Tie-ins: BCS/Rose (two bids?), Holiday, Sun, Emerald, Las Vegas, Hawaii, Poinsettia Locks: Arizona, California, Oregon, Oregon State, USC Bubble Teams: Arizona State, Stanford, UCLA No changes this week as every favorite won. Stanford's season is on the line in the Big Game on Saturday and they will win. They just have to. ASU and UCLA are both idle before their elimination game in two weeks. Still seems likely that at least the Poinsettia Bowl will be an open bid which would go to a WAC team. SEC Bowl Tie-ins: BCS/Sugar (two bids), Capital One, Cotton, Outback, Chick-Fil-A, Music City, Liberty, Independence, Papajohns.com Locks: Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Kentucky, LSU, Mississippi, South Carolina, Vanderbilt Bubble Teams: Arkansas, Auburn Since the conference is pretty much assured to BCS bids at this point which pushes the conference to ten bids, every eligible team is now a lock including Vanderbilt will be going to their first bowl in 26 years. Both Arkansas and Auburn are longshots to become bowl eligible which would leave the Independence and the Papajohns.com Bowl as open bids. I'm sure the Independence Bowl is just giddy over the possibility of instead of having an SEC/Big XII match-up they may end up with a MAC/Sun Belt showdown. Sun Belt Bowl Tie-in: New Orleans Locks: None Bowl Eligible: Troy Bubble Teams: Arkansas State, FIU, Florida Atlantic, UL Lafayette, Middle Tennessee The winner of the ULL/Troy game this week all but clinches the conference title and the New Orleans Bowl bid. Because of contingency bids and other open bids this sad sack of conference could conceivably end up sending four teams to bowls when all is said and done. WAC Bowl Tie-ins: BCS?, Humanitarian, Hawaii, New Mexico Locks: Boise State Bowl Eligible: Fresno State, Louisiana Tech, Nevada, San Jose State Bubble Teams: Hawaii As I already covered, Boise State's odds of landing a BCS bid could even longer than you think. Fresno, LA Tech, and Nevada all became bowl eligible this week but there is still way too many things that can happen to figure out who is going where and who is staying home. Again the Poinsettia Bowl will likely be added as a 4th bid for the conference, assuming the Pac-10 doesn't fill.

    2008 Bowl Bubble

It's happened many times because you have to remember there was a time when there wasn't 30+ bowl games. From 1984 to 1996 there was no more than 18 bowl games in a given year. It wasn't until the late 90's that we started to see this perpetual increase in the number of bowl games. Just last year though 8-4 Troy was snubbed due to the Sun Belt only having one bid as they lost their season finale to Florida Atlantic to lose the conference title.

  5. If you haven't already be sure to check the Week 12 thread where I cover the conference championship game tiebreaks, sorta, and the bowl picture. There are some of you at 5-7 and 4-8 who still might be able to get into your conference championship game which means you still have a shot at going to a bowl game. For those of you who really do have nothing to play for (including me) I want to you thank you for participating all year. Remember if you submit picks for this final regular season game you are reserved a spot in next year's contest. 6. I just saw that on Channel 2..any clue as to how many wins UH needs to get a bowl game, CV? If memory serves, they need one more. They beat up on Southern early in the season, so they've got 5 wins over 1A opponents, with games against UTEP and Rice left. The rule about I-AA wins not counting was thrown out a few years ago so they are bowl eligible. That's what happens when you have 34 bowl games, you can't risk not having enough eligible teams.
  7. I tried and I was only partially successful in figuring out the conference championship game tiebreaks. I first want to thank the members of the Southeastern Seven for making life easy for me as you title game is already set. I did figure out all Big Eight scenarios but for the other three conferences, I'm personally rooting for the easy scenarios to play out next week. Unfortunately in the Pac-8 there were no easy scenarios beyond that UZI Suicide has clinched a spot. In case you were wondering, the basic steps for tiebreaks are as follows. 1. Head-to-Head 2. Overall Record 3. BCS Ranking Big Eight -If San Diego State beats Indiana next week, title game will be Syracuse vs. San Diego State -If Indiana beats San Diego State and both Syracuse and Minnesota win, title game will be Syracuse vs. Minnesota. -If Indiana beats San Diego State and Syracuse wins and Minnesota loses, title game will be Syracuse vs. Indiana -If Indiana beats San Diego State and Minnesota wins and Syracuse loses, title game will be between the two higher ranked teams between Indiana, Minnesota, and Syracuse. -If Indiana beats San Diego State and Syracuse and Minnesota both lose, title game will be Syracuse vs. Indiana. Big MAC -Nebraska has clinched a spot in title game. -If Ball State wins next week, title game will be Nebraska vs. Ball State -If Ball States loses….well there’s just too many damn scenarios to cover after that, sorry. Pac-8 -Arizona has clinched a spot in title game. -Big clusterfuck. Southeastern Seven -Kentucky and Florida have clinched spots in title game. Western Atlantic -If N.C. State beats Miami and Virginia beats Boston College, title game will be N.C. State vs. Virginia -If N.C. State beats Miami and Boston College beats Virginia, title game will be N.C. State vs. Boston College -If Miami beats N.C. State there will be four-way tie that involving N.C. State, Miami, the UVA/BC loser, and Georgia Tech for the second spot. Too many possible scenarios to cover. Now onto the bowl games. Since I can't completely rule out some of you 5-7 and 4-8 teams in the Big MAC and Pac-8 (and Porter controls his own destiny in the Big Eight) possibly ending up in your conference championship I'm not even going to bother with who is "Still Alive" for a bowl game and just focus on those who are eligible. Of course those of you at 6-6 can become bowl eligible with a win next week. Currently there are 17 eligible teams and 11 of those have locked up bowl bids. Again odds are we are going to end up with more than 18 bowl eligible teams so I will probably be adding a 10th bowl game but I'm going to hold off until next week when I'll know for certain if it is needed. Note I won't be adding an 11th bowl game. Locked Up Bids Alabama Arizona Ball State Georgia Tech Kentucky Miami of Ohio Nebraska N.C. State Syracuse Tennessee Virginia Bowl Eligible Arizona State Indiana LSU Minnesota Notre Dame Ohio State Just a reminder, here is the bowl line-up. 8. Quick note, bowl updates and conference championship picture will be in a separate post. I honestly don't know if I'm going to figure out all the tiebreak scenarios for the conferences tonight but I'm going to give it a shot. Obviously the biggest result of the week was the stunning loss by UZI Suicide to a team using replacement picks but it was not lethal blow to his Bored Bowl chances. Vampiro69 scored a big win and even though he only moved up one spot overall, he actually picked up over 2 ranking points. Right now I'd say everyone in the Top 6 still can get to the Bored Bowl, obviously though some need more help than others. Mecca is once again alone as the top dog in overall record but the UZI Suicide loss actually ended up costing him #1 ranking. Bored Championship Series Rankings thru Week 12 1. N.C. 10. Annnnnnnnnd Troy has blown the lead. 33-31 LSU with 4:50 left. Also tune over to ESPN2 right now to see history as Vanderbilt is about to be bowl eligible for the first time in 26 years.
  11. Troy is now up 31-3 on LSU!!! They will never wear the bad luck purple jerseys ever again. The Tigers also are starting to become one of the biggest disappointments of the year as this will certainly drop them out of the Top 25, unless they pull off the miracle. Great moment in gambling at the end of the USC/STANFORD~ game as the Cardinal covered the 22.5 spread with a meaningless touchdown on the final play of the game.
  12. Oregon is in danger of blowing a 31 point lead against Arizona. They were up 48-17 with under five minutes left in the 3rd quarter and it's now 48-45 with six minutes to go. USC goes up 31-17 now. Oh well, it'll be the much sweeter to beat Cal to become bowl eligible.
  13. WTF: Troy 24, LSU 3 halfway thru the 2nd quarter. And for STANFORD~ those two big kick returns in the first half were killers as they really dominated the Trojans but only came away with a tie at the half and now it's coming back to haunt them.
  14. I'm sure Rose Bowl officials are thrilled with the possibility of a rematch of that epic 45-14 battle between Penn State and Oregon State earlier this season.
  15. The Clusterfuck to Tampa continues as North Carolina loses to Maryland. For those scoring at home, Virginia Tech controlled their own destiny in the Coastal division going into Thursday, then UNC controlled theirs going into today, and now it's Miami who controls their own destiny. They play at Georgia Tech next week.
  16. The ironic thing about this Big XII South mess, is that Texas really needs Oklahoma to win their next two games. If Tech wins next week, they clinch the division. If Oklahoma wins next week but loses in Stillwater the following week, Tech again will win the division (assuming they beat Baylor). Texas' only realistic shot at getting into the Big XII title game is for the three-way tie to happen. Rough position to be in for a team that was one second away from still being #1 with an almost clear path to the MNC game.
  17. Final deadline has passed, The Rocket's picks will be used for Boise State today.
  18. Still nothing from VX or teke. Here are replacement pick assignments just in case. Boise State - The Rocket LSU - Gert T

  20. I would be remiss in not noting that Fautino del los Santos had Tommy John surgery in May so that trade didn't turn out that great for the A's. Gonzalez really wasn't ready for the Majors when they called him up.
  21. Again, don't take partials. Gert doesn't get credit for this game. Vitamin X, JHawk, teke184, The Rocket, and Carnival are also late with their picks. AlwaysPissedOff picked Miami for tonight's game. 25. I'm so sick of the playoff debate but I have to call bullshit on this argument by Maisel. If Alabama had lost in overtime to LSU, they still would have had almost full control of their destiny to make the MNC game. If they lose that game, they drop to no lower than #5 and they would still have a shot to beat Florida in the SEC Championship game. They win that game and they still likely end up in the MNC game against the Big XII champ. After having a two loss national champ last year, I don't see how anyone can still make the "whole season is a playoff" argument with a straight face.
