I'd never seen that before, but I'm guessing he changed his mind between 1848 and 1861. There's no way the South could've survived on its own as a country for more than a few decades. It simply didn't have the industrial emphastructure to survive in an industrializing world, and thus would have been easy pickings for any late 19th or early 20th century imperial power that decided to invade. Slave rebellion would also have torn them apart. Lincoln was doing them a favor by not letting them leave.

I clicked on this thread again only because I saw Leena had supplied the last post, and I wasn't disappointed. Maybe that'll get me in trouble with some of you for encouraging her, but I don't care. Leena amuses me.

The difference being that the South had representation in the US Congress, whereas the colonies had no such representation in the British government. I'm sure there's an exact quote you're going to supply me with. I just wanted to make sure that both sides got represented.

Took the words right out of my mouth. People are so hard-headed about this. I know about 4 people besides myself who have an HD-TV, but I'm the only one with HD service. Hell, most of them still hook up their DVD player with regular yellow RCA cables. My parents told me they recently bought a 44" plasma screen. These are the same people who had trouble remembering they had to turn the TV to an "INPUT" channel to watch a DVD (using the DVD player I bought them last Christmas). Anyhow, my stepdad want to hook this $3000 technological marvel up to a VCR/DVD combo so there will be "less wires". If you want less wires, you shouldn't have bought something with 1080i resolution. They probably think you can push an HD signal through a coaxial cable. This is almost as bad as my sister-in-law who can’t tell the difference between 16:9 and 4:3 images unless someone points it out to her. She and her idiot husband paid $2300 for a 44" Toshiba HD-TV a couple of years ago and watch the same shitty TV stations they used to watch on their old TV.

Bush didn't lose the Presidental debates. Didn't win them either. Both guys sucked so much it had to be called a draw. Rewatch the first debate. Please. Kerry completely owned Bush. When one guy is totally incohernet, contradicts himself frequently, and fumbles his answers, and the other guy answers every question coherently, generally makes the other guy look like an idiot, and gets huge bounce in the polls the day following the first debate, I'd say that's a pretty clear indication there was a winner. MAYBE in the second and third debate it was a draw (and not from both guys sucking, but from both of them giving solid performances), but the polls after the debate indicated Kerry won all 3.

Bullshit. There's no such thing as a Constitutional right to secede from the Union, and the reason the South tried to secede had nothing to do with their "rights", but about pure greed (cheap slave labor + low tariffs). Let's not also forget it was the Confederacy that started the bloodshed by attacking Fort Sumter. This kind of revisionist history is a favorite of Southerners who want to brush their history of human enslavement under the rug, and of racists who use the "states rights" red herring to distract attention away from the fact that the only thing they really want the right to do is to subjugate their fellow human beings. The Confederacy was all about preserving the rights of rich white men, and nothing more. Educated historians agree that Abraham Lincoln was the greatest president America has ever had. The foolish ramblings of a deluded steriod-injecting bigot is hardly enough to convince me otherwise.
