The show opens with Tenay and Styles welcoming us to the show. They say that tonight we will start a tournament to crown the first ever UWE Universal Champion, as well as crown tag and Television champions, all tonight! They showed the brackets for the world title tournament, which had 16-men in it. We would see four first round matches from the top half of the bracket here tonight! 1) Randy Savage d. British Bulldog in a first round UWE Universal title tournament match at 5:10 after Paul Heyman interfered and hit Bulldog with a chair. Savage hit the elbow drop for the pinfall. After the match, Heyman introduced the Macho Man as his first client, and said that he was going to form a group of wrestlers that would take over UWE. *1/4 2) Kronik d. Caribbean Cool (Savio Vega and Carlito) and the Nasty Boys at 6:44 to become the first ever UWE tag team champions after hitting the High Times double chokeslam on Saggs. After the match, Arn Anderson and Bobby Eaton stormed the ring and attacked Kronik from behind, taking them out with chairshots. Arn hit a spinebuster on Adams and Eaton hit a top rope leg drop on Clarke! The announcers wondered why Eaton was with Anderson and yet Stan Lane was nowhere to be found. *1/4 Backstage, Sid Vicious confronted HBK, as they are scheduled in a first round tournament match later tonight. Sid said that HBK may have beaten him in the past, but Sid was bigger, stronger, and would powerbomb Shawn to hell here tonight. Sid said that in the end, the bigger man always wins. 3) Sting d. Masahiro Chono at 6:15 in a first round tournament match with the scorpion deathlock after working over the knee the whole match. Sting will face Randy Savage in the quarterfinals. *1/2 Backstage, Test runs into the Patriot. Test makes fun of the Patriot and America. Patriot challenges Test to a flag match, and Test agrees. 4) 6-man elimination match for the UWE Television title: Christopher Daniels d. Sonny Siaki, Rey Misterio, Jamie Knoble, Perry Saturn, and Alex Wright. Before the match, Joey Styles announces that the television title will be defended at EVERY UWE show. Saturn eliminates Wright first with a DVD, but is quickly rolled up by Misterio. Misterio then eliminates Noble with a top rope rana, but Siaki hits his Siakilypse to send Rey packing. Daniels finishes Siaki with the Angels Wings to win the title at 9:09. **1/2 -"Loose Cannon" Brian Pillman comes to the ring and goes off on the announcers, the crowd, and his opponent in his tournament match tonight, Randy Orton. Pillman said he raped Orton's mother, and kept going off until Orton came out to the ring. 5) Brian Pillman d. Randy Orton via DQ at 2:41 when Orton hit Pillman with a chair and gave him an RKO on the chair. Orton beat up Pillman the whole match, but Pillman's big mouth caused Orton to go over the edge and get DQ-ed. Pillman advances in the tournament. * -Anderson and Eaton do an interview backstage where they talk about why they attacked Kronik earlier tonight. Anderson and Eaton say that they are old school wrestlers, and they represent great tag team wrestling, not Kronik. Anderson and Eaton then introduce Dean Malenko, and say that Malenko is another guy that just like them is underrated and underappreciated by the fans. They challenge Kronik to find a tag partner and take them on in a six man tag team match next week. 6) Test d. Patriot in a flag match at 4:40 after interference from Nathan Jones, Carlito, Savio Vega, and Alex Wright! Test waved the Canadian flag to win and then the heel group took the American flag and set it on fire! Test got on the mic and said that we were now looking at a group called the United Nations, and that they were united AGAINST the United States of America. They held Patriot up, and Test drilled him with a big boot to the face. 1/2* -Backstage, Josh Matthews interviews the new UWE television champion, Christopher Daniels. Daniels says he'll proudly defend his TV title every week. Barry Windham then confronted Daniels and asked for the first title shot against the Fallen Angel. Daniels agreed. Windham then cheap shotted Daniels and took the title belt before driving it into Daniels face! Windham through Daniels against a wall and spit on him before getting run off by Paul London and Jerry Lynn. 7) Shawn Michaels d. Sid Vicious at 13:41 with an inside cradle when Sid attempted a powerbomb to advance in the UWE world title tournament. Shawn celebrated to end the show as Sid powerbombed the referee in frustration in the ring. ***1/4 Next week: Anderson/Eaton/Malenko vs. Kronik and ??? Daniels vs. Windham 4 more tournament matches! Much, much more!

Do you think Tough Enough will continue to be the highest rated segments on SD?
-
1) Was the online/smark community aware of the bait and switch that was going to be pulled by the WWF at Survivor Series 99 with Austin, or was that a surprise to everyone when it happened? 2) What was the history of the Hogan/Piper feud in WCW? How many times did they wrestle, when was it for the title and when was it non-title, and why would WCW have non-title matches on PPV anyways? 3) Why was Kenny Kaos picked as Rick Steiner's new tag team champion partner after Havoc 98? Was he about to get a big push or something? 4) How many matches did Bret Hart and DDP have during their US title feud in 1998 and were any of the matches good?
-
I think these are some really good points.

From Meltzer today: "The Undertaker-Heidenreich confrontation and match taped on Sunday in Rockford, just like last week's in Manchester, was done just for the live house so fans could see Undertaker. It also gives both men ring time together with all the main players watching so they can work on getting a good enough match for Survivor Series, if that's still the plan."

From the IWA boards: "Some notes from the show........Cannon appeared to be hurt very badly. The unbelieveable thing is, he finnished the match. He did one hell of a job finnishing under the pain he was visibly in. In the four way match for the title, Sabin took a Canadian Distroyer and landed wrong. He was in some serious pain when the match was over and Chris Daniels had to help him to the back. Sabin's injury looked very similar to Steve Austin against Owen Hart at Summerslam. His legs looked limp. I hope it isnt that bad, but it sure didnt look good. On to the good stuff. First off, the 4 way and the Cannon/Aries match, pre injury, were plenty worth buying the tape. The 4 way was simply insane toward the end. Abyss and Joe was pretty damn good too, but it didnt last real long. I was totally impressed by Candido. His match with Danny Daniels was one of the best on the card. All in all you cant beat IWA live, period. Oh yeah, last but not least, Ian announced that CM Punk would take the place of Cannon at the Highland show. He said you cant get it in ROH and you cant get it in TNA, so you WILL get it in IWA."

Gotta feel bad for Cannon.

Courtesy Dave Prazak on Chicago Hotline ROH Student Davey Andrews def. Spyder Nate Webb and Ryan Boz in a 3 way match Nigel McGuinness def. Chad Collyer in a quick match after interference by Roderick Strong. Ace Steel made the save for Collyer, leading too... Ace Steel/Chad Collyer def. Nigel McGuinness/Roderick Strong in an impromptu tag match CM Punk def. Alex Shelley Non-Title: Mercedes Martinez def. MsChif by disqualification after MsChif blew green mist in the face of Martinez in front of the referee Non-Title: Wildcards def. ROH students Evan Starsmore/Anthony Franco and Delirious/Double C in a 3 way tag team match Chris Candido def. Danny Daniels Matt Turner def. Shane Hagadorn Samoa Joe and Abyss wrestled to a countout. Afterwards, Ian Rotten announced that at the next Evansville show that both wrestlers are booked for, it will be a Steel Cage match between Samoa Joe and Abyss Super Dragon def. B.J. Whitmer In a very unfortunate circumstance, during the Austin Aries/Arik Cannon match for the IWA World Heavyweight Title, Austin Aries delivered a viscious clothesline to Arik Cannon, breaking Cannon's collarbone. Although in pain, Cannon did finish the match, defeating Aries with his feet on the ropes. In the back, it was confirmed Cannon had broken his collarbone, and would be out of action for several months. As a result, Ian Rotten announced that the 4-way match between Petey Williams/A.J. Styles/Chris Sabin/Christopher Daniels would be to crown a new IWA World Heavyweight Champion A.J. Styles is your new IWA World Heavyweight Champion, defeating Petey Williams, Chris Sabin, and Christopher Daniels. After the match, Ian Rotten asked CM Punk to come out from the back, and announced that since Arik Cannon was to face A.J. Styles at the 8th anniversary show in Highland, and due to Cannon's injury, that it would now be A.J. Styles vs. CM Punk in Highland for the IWA World Heavyweight Title!

Whoops. I meant the Barbarian. -
I actually thought the biggest problem with Starrcade 97 was that the Nitro the next night was a MUCH better show. -=Mike Details/Results? http://www.ddtdigest.com/updates/1997125m.htm

"Monster Tag Team" Tournament...

Crush wasn't in the original Demolition, that was Ax and Smash. -
Here's a review from someone at the IWA boards: =============================================== Austin Aries def. Sexy Ace Steel with a 450 splash Awesome match to start the quad shot. I have only seen Ace Steel a few times, and I like his style. This was a solid match. Some cool spots I haven't seen before. Brutal dropkick exchanges to the face in the corners. Abyss def. Spyder Nate Webb with the Black Hole Slam Nate started off with some good offense. Seemed to be taking the advantage, but then got caught and squashed by the black hole slam. ROH students: Shane Hagadorn def. Matt Turner Decent match. Pretty evident that they are just beginning, but I think they'll do well. Hagadorn won with a handful of tights. Non-Title: Mercedes Martinez def. Tracy Brooks with a Fisherman Buster Usual IWA women's match. They always are just as damn good as the men's matches. Good technical wrestling. Chad Collyer def. Danny Daniels with the Collyer Cloverleaf Another good match. Not really much to say about it, just good wrestling. Brandon Thomaselli def. Double C with an Air Raid Crash I really like both of these guys. They opened with a chain of every wristlock reversal in the book. Seriously, they put each other in different wristlocks for at least 3 minutes. CM Punk made Super Dragon submit with the Anaconda Device Dragon may have lost, but Punk took a stiff curb stomp (they all are pretty stiff though). Dragon almost had the pyscho driver. Don't remember what the anaconda device looked like, but it was cool. ROH student Davey Andrews def. Ian Rotten after outside interference behind the ref's back from Steve Stone, Chris Candido, and Jim Fannin Ian was pretty much killing Andrews, of course there was stiff palm strikes, brutal crossfaces, and concussion causing headbutts galore. Andrews' eyes were rolling a few times. Ian was about to finish things with the rotten rush, when fannin and goons ran out. Stone distracted and Candido hit Ian with a chain from behind. Then Ian talked about Candido's wife being a whore. Non-Title: Wildcards def. ROH students Anthony Franco and Evan Starsmore Decent tag match. Again, obvious that the students are still new. But good, solid wrestling. And of course the Wildcards worked the crowd amazingly well. TNA X-Division Title Match: Petey Williams def. Alex Shelly with a Styles Clash. After the match A.J. Styles stole the X Division Title from Petey Williams Awesome chain wrestling. Shelley had some messed up hair with little pony tails on the back half, but shaggy in the front. Williams went for the destroyer a few times, and Shelley hit the shellshock. Welcome Back: Christopher Daniels def. Chris Sabin with the Angel's Wings First time seeing Daniels live. Good wrestling. Good reversals. Good match. Samoa Joe def. Ryan Boz with a Rear Naked Choke Boz held up surprisingly well. Both got in their stiff shots. Joe hit the ole kick. Boz didn't really stand a chance. Chris Candido def. A.J. Styles, wearing the TNA X-Division Title to the ring, after outside interference behind the ref's back by Steve Stone and Jim Fannin. Styles gave a Style's Clash to Steve Stone, apparently landing on Stone's neck, don't know if any injury occured. Ian Rotten then helped a beaten down Styles, brawling with Chris Candido to the back. Great match. Candido is hilarious. Keeps telling everyone that he is trying to wrestle. Fannin says to finish him, and he says he is wearing him down. Inevitable interference happens. Stone took the Styles Clash Kazarian style, had to be assisted to the back. Ian and Candido brawled all over the place, Ian chased Fannin, the beat on Candido some more. Referee Tommy Thompson was punched in the scuffle. IWA World Title Match: Arik Cannon def. Roderick Strong with a Glimmering Warlock Great Strong style match. Many, many beautiful chops in this match. Stiff forearms. Great defense for Cannon.
-
Interesting booking. I really hope Candido did well in his match with Styles. You'd figure that would be a guy Candido could have a great match with if he still has some gas in the tank and has cleaned up, etc. Anyways, I'm interested to hear how big the crowd was and how good the matches were. I'm also interested to see Cannon vs. Strong where they're given more than 7-8 minutes.
-
Most people at the ROH show said they were very green but did okay. Some were very small, though the "top student" Davey Andrews was pretty well built. I guess I'll see for myself how they are when I buy these shows.
-
Super Dragon has to win in IWA-MS sooner or later, right? I'm guessing he beats Whitmer tomorrow night. The show should be ending fairly soon, hopefully we have the rest of the results in just a bit.
-
Results so far: Austin Aries def. Sexy Ace Steel with a 450 splash Abyss def. Spyder Nate Webb with the Black Hole Slam ROH students: Shane Hagadorn def. Matt Turner Non-Title: Mercedes Martinez def. Tracy Brooks with a Fisherman Buster Chad Collyer def. Danny Daniels with the Collyer Cloverleaf Brandon Thomaselli def. Double C with an Air Raid Crash CM Punk made Super Dragon submit

Yeah, I had to laugh at Franky's insane rant. He had a fairly fun match with El Generico at their last show, so I don't mind him at all, he's a good heel.
-
Just wondering...why do you want the PPV versions instead of the Colliseum video versions or whatever?
-
Punk is "straight edge". He doesn't smoke, drink, do drugs, etc. He had a great feud with Raven in ROH where he hated Raven because he said Raven wasted his life on drugs, alcohol, rats, etc. I think Punk could get the easy cheap heat in the WWE by saying he doesn't drink and that's he's better than anyone who does, etc. Punk's real strength is in his promos, because he's one of the best in the indies at them...and he's a pretty damn solid worker too.
-
"Kurt beat Jacque Rogeau, he pinned him clean. Jacque Rogeau pinned Hogan clean. So technically speaking, Kurt ended Hulkamania!" Franky the Mobster ranting about the neccesity of wearing a fanny pack made me laugh too.

I didn't buy anything from ROH after the RF scandal until they split officially and made their own website. RF still posts his shills all over the net, but I have to think that barely anyone buys anything from him anymore. And the ROH product has really improved since all that shit went down around March. The stuff from April-now has been really fun for the most part, though most "casual" fans judge the product on what they've seen, which is generally from 2002-2003. TNA just hasn't grabbed my interest at all. I feel like it's a really "dumbed down" product for some reason. There's no complexity at all to ANY of the storylines.
