  1. Then why couldn't a player tell MLB that he's taking an OTC medication, then take something else? Most steroid tests measure hormone levels and detect abnormalities. Generally, they do not catch specific substances.
  2. The problem is that the Marlins destroyed their own fanbase. After winning the World Series in 1997, the team was dismantled, as Moises Alou, Robb Nen, Devon White, Jeff Conine, Kevin Brown, Al Leiter, Dennis Cook and Kurt Abbott were all traded over the offseason. The only good players the Marlins received in return were Derrek Lee and A.J. Burnett. Neither player made a significant impact for three years. The firesale continued in May, as the Marlins traded Bobby Bonilla, Charles Johnson AND Gary Sheffield for Mike Piazza and Todd Zeile. Don't get too excited about Piazza. He was shipped out a week later for Preston Wilson in Ed Yarnell (in fairness, a future Yarnell trade would net the Marlins Mike Lowell). Todd Zeile was traded at the deadline for two minor leaguers. The result was a team that lost 108 games. The franchise has never recovered from that firesale. In 2002, they BARELY outdrew the helpless Montreal Expos (and it took a mysterous bulk buy of tickets on the last day to do it). Truthfully, the franchise may need to move, as the fans do not seem to want to buy into the Marlins again.
  3. It matters because I'd much rather face Tike Redman and Mark Redman than face A.J. Burnett and Carlos Delgado.
  4. How long do the Yankees wait before we start hearing the dreaded "R" word (rebuilding). They can make short term fixes, but then they are just delaying the inevitable.
  5. I am sort of familiar with these areas, I go to East Stroudsburg University. How close are you to there? Pittston would be a few miles away from Wilkes-Barre, about an hour's drive from East Strousdburg University. Myself, I live close to Mt. Pocono, around 20 miles away.
  6. Fun stat of the day.... Hee Seop Choi: 262/351/462 Shawn Green: 264/325/409
  7. I think the real question is how this happens on a club with Derek Jeter's awesome leadership abilities.
  8. Here's a novel idea. Build this stadium in Las Vegas while the Marlins run out their deal in Miami, then they would have a home ready when they move. The problem is that then the Marlins are a lame duck team in Miami for three years. That would be gastly in terms of attendance.
  9. They should move the club to Montreal.
  10. Why is it that the AAA team can tag Jae Seo for four runs, and the big club can not touch him?
  11. That's the other thing. THe league will now run for eight games, and the World Series is now a best of four format. Oh yeah, and three DHs.
  12. One important change. Well, semi-important. Instead of a 25 man roster and five reserves, I am just going to run with 30 man rosters. I think the effect will be minimal. It just saves me the trouble of having to switch the rosters around before setting the lineups.
  13. Bluffing.
  14. The walks do not count in the at bat tally, so that is slightly misleading. I do not know what is sadder. That Giambi's hitting so bad, or that his OPS is still better than Jorge Posada, Hideki Matsui, Bernie Williams, and Tony Womack.
  15. I don't live in Florida. I've never lived within less than two hours of a major league city. That city was Philadelphia (I lived where Al lives now) and I just NEVER liked the Phillies. The only times I've seen the Marlins live have been in the Vet and Citizen's Bank Park. Now that I'm in NC, I can go see Yorman Bazardo, Jeremy Hermida, and the rest of the future Marlins play at Carolina, so this is the closest I've been. They can move anywhere in the US and I'd still be a fan. Where exactly did you live? I'm well outside of Philly in Northeast PA.
  16. It's not. I'm going to run with this shortly.
  17. Another pitchers' duel today in Baltimore, as the Blue Jays and Orioles are scoreless in the sixth.
  18. Fuck no. Portland, Las Vegas, and another location would all like a Major League Baseball team. Folding a team is bad for business overall.
  19. Just move them to the N.L. West and make it a six team division and move the Pirates to the East where they should already be. The Pirates' were in a division with the Cubs and Cardinals for years, that shouldn't change. But at the same time, they were the Phillies' main rival until the division shift in 1994. With the unbalanced schedule, we sometimes only see the Pirates one series a year.
  20. For Iverson, it goes being pure ability. He's just an amazing athlete who plays as hard as anyone I have ever seen, in any sport.
  21. I am sorry, but I can not buy the idea that Ben Gordon was entirely the difference between the fourth seed and a losing team. It ignores that they added Luol Deng and Andres Nocioni, got 45 more games from Tyson Chandler, and received increased production from Eddy Curry and Kirk Hinrich. Without Ben Gordon, they still make the playoffs. Honestly, if Ben Gordon was such a key to that team, why wasn't he starting? The Bulls finished 26th out of 30 in offensive efficiency, but second in defensive efficiency. They did not win games because they scored many points. They won games through their defense. What kind of defense did Ben Gordon play? Actually, Gordon had more assists. But first off, your demeaning statistics like they do not mean anything, and second, you are attacking the wrong statistics. Player Efficiency Rating (PER) sums up a players offensive accomplishments in one figure. Okafor beats Gordon. Turnover ratio, measures turnovers made as a percentage of possessions. Okafor turned over the ball less frequently than did Gordon, and Turnover Ratio usually favors guards. And that is before we even look at defense. Okafor has an outstanding defensive reputation.
  22. Who was the Yankees' token lefty last season? Felix Heredia. I'd rather have Choate.
  23. Funny how $30 Million is out of reach, yet they could afford to spend $32 Million on Carlos Delgado. Jeff Loria knew about the lease when he bought the team. And considering how he pissed on the Expos' legacy and fucked over the city of Montreal, I have no sympathy for him.
  24. Because due to the settlement regarding the logo, they are out of print.
  25. What scares me is that an entire 1/5th on the audience did not know it either.
