Fox 5 in New York has Cards/Astros as well. The NYY game doesn't actually start until 8:20. -

Bernie I covered on page one. He doesn't quite have the numbers. Posada no. He's never led the league in anything, and he's been to just four All-Star games. If he posts a .400 OBP for the next five years, he'll get consideration.

When a player boasts a .377 OBP, isn't 4 hits in 23 at bats an anomaly as well? -

Because Bob Brenly would've thrown a hissy fit. Seriously, I'm not sure. They were discussing doing that strategy before the game. My only thought is that perhaps the Yankees felt it was best not to forgo their usual approach in favor of trying to be cute. As an aside, you might enjoy this blog from a Yankees' fan. http://yankeefan.blogspot.com/ -

Even if the Sox lose, it means everything. This is exactly what Yogi Berra was talking about. Hope never dies. You can keep going forever, as long as you keep hitting, and keep winning. Its not that the Sox will win. Its that they CAN win. -

Question for Yankee fans. Lieber has an $8 Million option for next season. Should the Yankees pick it up? -

I'd wait for Francona's news conference tonight to find out for sure. -

As someone famous once said, pitching is about disrupting the hitter's timing. IT'S TWO FUCKING MILES AN HOUR SLOWER THAN WHAT THEY NORMALLY GET. This isn't some slow looping 75 mph curve. It should not dumbfound one of the greatest lineups (on paper) ever. When you stand in the batter's box, the ball arrives in about a second. Swinging and making contact is a matter of milliseconds. That's why the best hitters still get hits only 30-40% of the time. A few mphs here or there make all the difference in the world. -

As someone famous once said, pitching is about disrupting the hitter's timing. It is not how fast the pitcher throws, but whether he can fool the batter. -
It's very hard to say. There isn't a coach I could comfortably induct. Even Mazzone's magic I'm not sure of. I'm half convinced Atlanta's pitching magic is due to Andruw Jones.

Wow. Way to throw me a curveball Verne. Like the broadcasters, the writers have their own wing of the Hall. I think James belongs there. No baseball writer has done more to influence the game in the last half-decade than James.

I think we've covered the play as far as it should go. If anyone has any more complaints/discussion, wait until after the game. -

JUDGMENT. Jeter was at second base. No because by your "Judgement" Jeter scored before they ever said, "dead ball" The fact is, A-rod Swatted the ball and the ball was declared dead. Just like a foul ball is a dead ball and even if the runner gets to second before the ball falls into the stands, HE STILL GOES BACK TO 1st. I didn't say he scored before he hit the ball. But I'm pretty damn sure Jeter was at 2nd BEFORE A-Rod hit the ball away. It doesn't matter where Jeter was. A-Rod had not reached first. According to the rule, the runners return to the base they held before the play. -
None at all. No one holds the collapse of 1978 against the Red Sox, and I've never heard of a player excluded from the Hall solely due to a bad postseason performance.

JUDGMENT. Jeter was at second base. The last sentence supercedes that clause. You'll notice it says "unless otherwise provided by these rules." -

Wait. Wakefield pitched on Saturday, Sunday, and Monday for three innings. I know hes a knuckle baller, but thats insane. Knuckleballers are crazy like that. The Niekro brothers pitched into their 40s. Wilbur Wood once pitched 376 innings in a season. The pitch causes little strain, so they last. -

That was insightful. She didn't do anything. She just happened to be standing there when the ball got there. -

Interesting case, but it doesn't win me over. His ERA+ was 105, barely over league average.
-
Carter no. His OBP was abysmal, and his slugging pct. wasn't in the top 100. Gaston no. Dave Stewart no. 168 wins is not enough without a spectacular win percentage. I'm fairly sure I covered Walker earlier. He's got the best case of anyone on the list, but I can't endorse him. Alou no. He's been good, but not HOF good. Van Horne I can't make a judgement on.
