In fact, the updated odds give the Marlins a 1% chance of making the playoffs. Cubs fans will be pleased to know that their odds of winning the wild card are now 60%.
-
Nope. The two pitchers are Frank Tanana and Rick Reuschel.
-
So because of problems caused by salary arbitration, they need a salary cap? Why not just fix salary arbitration?
-
Neither.
-
Nope. Ryan is an admirable guess, but surprisingly not.
-
Here's a trivia question. Name two pitchers who surrendered home runs to both Barry Bonds and Hank Aaron.

Today we've got game two of the Red Sox/Yankees series. Jon Lieber vs. Derek Lowe, 1pm ET. Presumably on Fox. The SF Giants host the San Diego Padres, David Wells vs. Jason Schmidt. The Padres are four back of the wild card, and if they fall 5 games back, I have to believe they're finished. Oakland @ Seattle, Tim Hudson vs. Cha Seung Baek. The A's are just a game up on the Angels, while Ichiro continues to chase Sisler. Ichiro currently has 235 hits, which ties him for 24th on the single season list.

Show of hands. How many people thought this game could possibly go the full nine innings?

This I found interesting, from Baseball Prospectus. What surprised me is that they give the Cubs a 56% chance at winning the wild card. I think part of that is that the Giants may catch the Dodgers, and thus remove themselves from the wild card race. The Yankees are given a 99.99% chance of making the playoffs, while the Red Sox have a meager 99.5% shot. The White Sox still have a .003% chance of winning the AL Central. The Marlins are given only a 3.38% chance of reaching the playoffs, while my Phillies have an .1% chance of making the postseason. http://www.baseballprospectus.com/statistics/ps_odds.html

I've already witnessed Randy Johnson, Kenny Rogers, David Wells and David Cone throwing perfect games live on television. It's still an mind-boggling feat, nonetheless. But let's talk about rarity. As least with me, I didn't see Babe Ruth or Hank Aaron hit their 700th homer live. Did you? No I haven't, but when you have players using steroids to enhance their strength, it means much less. I'm not going to start an argument, but I'm in the boat that thinks Bonds didn't hit 700 home runs naturally. Craig Nettles put superballs in his bat. The Yankees didn't come about all of their wins honestly. Therefore, today's game isn't important.

Sisler's record isn't really that impressive. Sisler got alot of hits because he never drew many walks. Other players never approached his record because their high OBPs beat Sisler's empty batting average. For what its worth, McGwire reached base MORE often when he hit 70 home runs than Sisler did when he collected 257 hits. Dimaggio hit .381 that season. Dimaggio's achievement is more impressive, because no one has yet to even approach it. Many players have hit .400, but none have come close to doing what Dimaggio did. Now, Williams' achievement was more VALUABLE, but Dimaggio's was more impressive.

Enough of this. We have an ESPN bitching thread. Take it over there.
-
News to me. Now explain why they didn't cut to the Big Unit everytime he had a two strike count. He's third all time in strikeouts, and there's a decent chance that he'll get as far as second now. Is that not important? Its simply not practical.
-
Agreed. The Sox and Yankees are fighting over home field advantage, and the Sox have about an 8:1 shot of catching the Yankees. Its not that big of a game anyway. Forgive us if we're sick of the Sox/Yankees circlejerk dominating coverage. We want to see history.
-
Hell I've got the game on CBS 2 right now. No interruptions here. ESPN is just showing an ESPNNews simulcast, due to blackout restrictions. So I haven't even seen Bonds' home run.

If its unbearable, then STOP WATCHING IT.

OaO Fantasy Football Advice Thread
EVIL~! alkeiper replied to TheOriginalOrangeGoblin's topic in Sports
I changed the topic title, as this has gone far enough. Post all of your fantasy football questions in this thread. Thank you. Mgmt. -
I love it. Consecutive posts featuring a Yankee and Red Sox fan bitching about the strike zone.
-
Wells does pitch well in Yankee Stadium, but I doubt it would improve the benefit he gets now from playing in Petco Park.
-
Yankee fans in their quest for passable starters long for the return of David Wells, while Jon Lieber puts up similar numbers right under their noses.
-
Here are some interesting numbers. Guess which pitchers these two stat lines belong to..... Player A: 11-8, 155 1/3 IP, 18 HR, 17 BB, 87 K Player B: 11-7, 170 IP, 19 HR, 17 BB, 85 K

Anyone interested in an AIM chat for the game?

http://sports.yahoo.com/mlb/news;_ylc=X3oD...ov=ap&type=lgns So Francisco gets 16 days. Obviously that is a light suspension, but I don't agree with the full season crowd either. I've looked up prior examples. Cesar Cedeno got no suspension and a $5,000 fine for attacking a fan in 1985. Pete Rose drew a 30 day suspension for nearly inciting a riot at Riverfront Stadium.

I don't buy the curse because for as many times as they've "choked", they've pulled miracles out of their ass. For every Bill Buckner, there's a Dave Henderson playoff HR. For every Bucky Dent, there's Bernie Carbo tying game six. For every Aaron Boone, there's Carl Yastrzemski and his insane pennant stretch run in 1967. Where were the curses then? Bottom line is, the Cubs and Red Sox haven't put a truly GREAT team on the field since their last championships. That's mostly why they haven't won.

Tonight the first game is scheduled between the Red Sox and Yankees, but rain makes the game doubtful for tonight. I think their best bet is to play tomorrow's game in the evening, and play a doubleheader on Sunday. Oakland faces off with Seattle tonight. The A's are holding on to a two game lead in the AL West, while Ichiro is approaching George Sisler's hits record. The Padres face the Giants tonight. The Padres are barely holding on in the wild card race, while the Giants lead the wild card race, and are just 2.5 games out of the NL West. Oh yeah, Barry Bonds is going for #700. A great pitching matchup in Houston, as Ben Sheets and the Brewers face Roy Oswalt and the Astros.
