George Sisler's 1920 season was better, but Ichiro is the better player overall. Ichiro's career batting average is .338, while George Sisler's was .340. But Sisler did it while the league average was .295, while Ichiro has done it while the career average was .260. Sisler hit for power in 1920, but that power dissapated quickly after he turned 30. Ichiro is a better basestealer, and a better fielder. And here is a short list of players who have better career OBPs than George Sisler. Fred McGriff, Alvin Davis, Earl Torgeson, Jack Clark, Mark McGwire, Gene Tenace, Ralph Kiner, Elmer Valo, Max Bishop, Eddie Stanky.

He slid too late into second base and jammed his leg on the bag.

The Padres were in a serious bind because both Sean Burroughs and Rich Aurilia are also injured. They needed a body just to keep fighting the wild card race.
-
Genetic Freak. He leads the league in Pitcher Abuse Points, closely ahead of Jason Schmidt, and far ahead of the rest of the pack. But he's never shown any signs of wear, and he's pitching much better over the last two seasons. Overuse has been suspected for years now, but there's no sign of worry whatsoever.

Perhaps, but at lease I didn't waste a half hour today watching I, Max.

That type of viewer is exactly why these shows suck.

And we still don't know what the fans said. I'm 90% sure it was more than the standard heckling banter we all know and love. Relief pitchers have heard heckling their entire careers. What caused Brocail to flip out over this fan in particular? We don't know yet. As always, I'm reserving full judgement until I have all the facts. Francisco was out of line, and deserves what he gets. But that doesn't explain the entire scenario.

The Rangers have a shot, but realistically they NEED to win the next two games to stay in the race.

I'd like to point out that I don't buy whatever profit/loss figures the NHL throws out there. It is too easy to manipulate the figures. I'd like to see a truly independent analysis, like the one Forbes did for baseball a few seasons ago.

10-6 so far. My mission to beat the Chicago White Sux at their own game is working to perfection. 18 Ks, one walk, 2 earned runs, 1.20 ERA, 0.53 WHIP. If my hitting holds up their end, the upset is mine. -
This isn't exactly that, but close: they confirmed that they're not bringing Magglio Ordonez back. Hmph. Without Magglio and Thomas, the White Sox are....well, they're what you see right now, basically. I've heard rumors that Mag's knee is fucked to the point where it will really hurt his performance next season. I don't have a source on that, but if its true the Sox reluctance to bring him back is understandable.

Parity in the NFL isn't just the salary cap. It's the amateur draft, short schedule, and the fact that you can simply cut whoever the hell you want. We'd have more parity in MLB if teams could cut guys like Mo Vaughn, but that is such a terribly one-sided system that it boggles the mind. The NFL Players' Union is pussy-whipped. The NFL makes billions each year, and the players get a fraction of it. Look at the NBA. The salary cap is a failure in terms of competitive balance. The mechanism that most controls team quality is not free agency, it is the system in which new players enter the league. In the NHL, it is the amateur draft. Keep that in place, and half the battle is won. I have a hard time believing owners are getting raked on player salaries. This is not an era of private ownership anymore. The vast majority of teams are run by corporations, and these people are not stupid. It's simple. Estimate your profits, set a payroll, and stay within that payroll. But the owners can't manage this without a salary cap? It's nonsense. Salary caps are a waste of everyone's time, except the greedy owners who still think its 1804.

When did the XFL outdraw anything outside of the first week? Test patterns could have gotten better ratings.
-
Well, the local weather here in PA said a high pressure system would stall Ivan, so the effects of the rain in NY could be minimal.
-
I always side with the players on these kind of issues. Salary caps are complete nonsense. They do nothing to promote competitive balance. They simply serve to set artificial restrictions on player salaries.

Johnson Ks two in the seventh, and is now 3rd all time in strikeouts.

This piece sums up several of our feelings perfectly..... http://www.sperts.net/editorial.php?page=9...=Jim%20Margalus

Sorry, 3rd. I forgot about Roger Clemens.

Arizona leads Colorado, 2-0 in the fifth. Randy Johnson has struck out eight batters, tying him with Steve Carlton for second on the All-Time strikeout list.
-
Here's a legitimate reason to be upset about the Bonds thing. I do think its worth keeping an eye on. But in Arizona, Randy Johnson has TIED Steve Carlton for 2nd all time in strikeouts. I haven't even seen a mention.

I think any big round number trumps the hits record at this point. Now when Ichiro gets to 257 and 258, that's notable. But what is exciting about 234?
-
Because there is no logical argument for Concepcion besides that he had a bunch of great teammates. Morgan putting Concepcion in the Hall would be on the level of all the ex-Cardinals and ex-Giants that made the Hall for the sole reason that Frankie Frisch was chair of the veterans' committee.

That article hit the bullseye.

Actually, there is little if any East Coast bias in awards voting. Heck, when the Yankees had their late 90s run, the award was constantly won by Texas Rangers. Isn't that Carlos Silva?

I think the better question is why anyone still watches Baseball Tonight. That show became completely vapid real quick.
