And obviously he made alot of catches that did show up in the stat sheet. The Astros allowed the third fewest runs in the National League while playing in an extreme hitters park. That can't be all pitching.

Maddux isn't under contract at all. He's a free agent. I know... I'm just saying he might have a high asking price so unless he wisely lowers his asking price I wouldn't risk it but if you could get him to cut down from his 15 million to let's say HALF that...you'd be a fool NOT to take him. I'd be SHOCKED if he makes more than $8 million. Last year showed that teams are unwilling to spend massive amounts of money on unsure talent. Looking over baseball-reference.com however, Maddux doesn't look so bad. Of the top 10 most similar pitchers of his age, 8 pitched effectively for a few more seasons. Personally, I'd spend around $5 million for Maddux, but no more.

The full explanation runs around a hundred pages or so. The gist of it is this. Fielding statistics such as assists and double plays are essentially worthless because bad teams look just as good as good teams, because you always get 24-27 outs regardless of your performance. Win Shares starts with a team's runs allowed total, divides them between pitching and fielding, and breaks down the fielding between individual fielders. Its not a perfect system, but its better than most of what's out there.
