Interesting, I was always under the impression that III was the least critically aclaimed out of their first 6 albums. Btw, I would say their best song is either Kashmir or The Rain Song.

Purple Rain is almost certainly the best, however: The Who's Tommy album deserves to be mentioned. And was David Bowie's Low album a movie soundtrack? If so that deserves high consideration for being the best, although I still think Purple Rain is better.
