  1. I'm really down on Scavenger Town. Seems like it's just a bunch of wrestling stuff.
  2. House approves bailout Final vote was 263-171. I'm not happy with some of the provisions in this new pork-filled plan, but I'm still of the opinion that the $700 billion is absolutely necessary. I do like that there seems to be quite a bit of oversight into how the money gets spent and when and how it will be paid back.
  3. Pending keepers: Albert Pujols Jimmy Rollins Manny Ramirez Dustin Pedroia Conor Jackson Chris Iannetta
  4. Not sure where to put this, as it an interesting, but essentially meaningless tidbit. David DeJesus of the Royals was the most efficient RBI man in baseball this year, knocking in 21.47% of all baserunners that were on when he came to bat. Ryan Howard was tops in the NL at just over 20%. I don't really know if this is a repeatable skill, but maybe there is something to the Yankees rumored pursuit of DeJesus. It's certainly not his defense, which rated out as poor by most metrics. Oh, and what's the deal with the Yankees shopping Cano? I don't put a ton of stock in trade rumors, but it seems like his name is dropped in almost every rumored deal out there. Has management soured on him that much? Or is it just a matter of moving talent to acquire pieces that are needed elsewhere?
  5. Job losses worse than expected in September
  6. I just started watching the show this season, but tonight's episode was unreal. I haven't laughed that hard at a tv show in years.
  7. On second thought, maybe it is a good thing that Czech took a playoff hiatus.
  8. They're calling them Ray-hawks. More like Gay-hawks, amirite?
  9. I don't have much familiarity with the imports, but I've had probably 80% of the stuff listed on the American side. The offerings from Stone (IPA, Arrogant Bastard and Smoked Porter) are all quite good. Stone is a good place to go if you are looking for more adventurous versions of traditional American brews. Sierra Nevada, Fat Tire, Anchor Steam and Kona all play well to the more middle of the road beer drinker. Solid brews, but underwhelming if you want deep flavor or extreme hoppiness. Dogfish Head we've discussed here before. The 90 Minute IPA takes some preparation as it has a strong alcohol taste. I'm not a big fan of the Oktoberfest beers. When I do indulge, Widmer Okto is usually my choice. That's probably just because it's easy to find around here. Hope that helps a little. EDIT: On second look, I've had most of those imported beers too. I wouldn't recommend any of them, but that's more of a personal call.
  10. It's TSM. We hate everybody.
  11. Your daily economic update, courtesy of the New York Times. The Senate's passage of the bailout was a step in the right direction, but the economic conditions continue to worsen under the specter of vanishing credit. Credit worries continue
  12. Stolen directly from MLB Trade Rumors, Elias rankings for free-agent NL starters.
  13. Omar Minaya's extension became official today. It is a four-year extension with two more option years. That's six years for a GM! I was one of the few people that actually supported him returning, but that's just overly excessive considering Cashman and Epstein just signed new three-year extensions.
  14. Ben Gordon signed the Bulls qualifying offer. He'll be an unrestricted free agent at the end of the season.
  15. Vladdy continuing to show why he's A-Rod West.
  16. I don't know how he rates in right, but Matthews was one of the worst defensive centerfielders in baseball. The reputation doesn't match the performance. Martinez made it sound like he lost it in the lights. I'm not so sure about that.
  17. Lester's pitching a hell of a game so far. Lackey too, for that matter. I was just messing around. No need for any Manny debate.
  18. Can't replace Manny's bat my ass!
  19. I don't usually post while I'm watching the game. Forget the camera, someone show him to a decent men's store.
  20. Yes, that's the right idea. I was diligent about doing that as well when I was a mod. It's need to be done in a lot of other folders as well (credit to Czech for doing it in Music... even if the thread titles leave something to be desired).
  21. No one has ever adequately explained to me why we too many threads is a bad thing. I'd like to see each folder turn over once a week. That would mean 2-3 new threads per folder, per day. As for stupid and unnecessary threads, yeah I get it. Mods close them now... why wouldn't they close them if mega-threads were gone?
  22. Good. Looks like they think they have all the support needed for House passage as well. I have regained faith in our democratic system. For now.
  23. Offseason threads are bad. I agree with you there. As for the definition of a mega-thread... I don't know. You just kind of know them when you see them. I'm talking about those threads that encompass multiple topics and go on and on for pages with no breaks. I don't have any problem with a thread being long. It's the threads that keep going without any frame of reference. At least with TWIB and NFL x they turn over on a weekly basis. CWDWAT just go on forever and ever. Same with the Wii thread or Campaign 2008. Think of it as like reading a book. There are short paragraphs and long paragraphs, but you at least get a new one when the thought changes. The mega-threads are like one paragraph going on for dozens of pages. Horrible analogy, I know, but maybe it can give you a visual.
  24. The sports folder is nothing but megathreads. Really? I'm the one railing against mega-threads and I think the Sports folder is one place where they aren't that prevalent. There are few, but nothing egregiously bad like a few of the other folders.
