  1. I'm going with JJ's logic. I'm building a competitive team, not a collection of Pro Bowlers. There's dominant players at every position in every decade, but I prefer guys like Chris Samuels and my prospective D-Tackles, space-eaters at key positions that'll slow the game down. There's a strategy for every team, and that's fine -- that's just how I'm building my team against other teams. The team write-up we do at the end of the draft should explain every team well.
  2. Darren Woodson made his name as a strong safety, so that opens up a slot for one of the "Hit Men"... Free Safety, Gary Fencik. Chicago Bears - Primary Defensive Captain Franchise Leader in Tackles and INT's (38) Eight 100-Tackle Seasons; tied for 2nd on Bears All-Time list in that regard with Urlacher -- both are behind Singletary 2 Pro Bowls ('80 and '81) 6 All-Pro Awards ('79, '80, '81, '82, '84 and '85) Originally drafted by the 'Fins, but he ruptured a lung (!) and was ready to retire until the hometown Bears gave him a contract.
  3. ESPN talking heads are saying that the discussed players would be ones that are arbitration-eligible at the end of the season. So at the end of all of this, the Marlins won't have to pay anybody. And yes, that's the way they've always done business.
  4. To be fair, he wasn't my pick. As for what I would've done? I would've gone with either Montana or LT-56 first. EDIT: And holy shit, I never noticed that Jack Lambert looked so much like my father - either that or he idolized Jack so much he stole the fu manchu from him. Fortunately, my dad did have a full set of teeth.
  5. Fokai248.
  6. There's Lambert, there's Butkus, there's Singletary and Greg Lloyd, but none of them were as unapologetic a motherfucker as... Middle Linebacker, Mike Curtis 6'2", 232 lbs. Baltimore Colts Team Captain 4 Pro Bowls ('68, '70, '71 and '74) AFC D-POY ('70) Notable Career Stats (1965-1978): 22 sacks and 25 INT's. Voted as the "meanest player" of his era. According to Bart Starr, "scarier than Butkus". Interception in Super Bowl V led Colts on final scoring drive to beat the Cowboys. Originally drafted as a fullback, he will join the offense in goal-line situations. Colts General Manager Joe Thomas commented in the early 1970’s, “Mike Curtis is the best middle linebacker in professional football. In response, Curtis said "Joe Thomas is the worst (bleep) in pro football”. I'm in love with my prospective picks coming up. By the end of this, I will have a good-ole 70's-era defense. Biting, gouging, stabbing if need be, with good ol' Junior Seau to play nice to the refs. Note to MODs: Please add Darren Woodson to my roster, as well as moving Roger Craig to fullback. Thank you.
  7. Korver was the catalyst for the Jazz's second half run, not to mention that C.J. was already fighting with Ronnie Brewer for minutes to begin the season. Miles was just a casualty of a solid rotation.
  8. I'm passing my pick until tonight after I get home from work -- Samuels was the last pick on my list of players I coveted, so it's back to researching picks. I'm on a really crappy work computer that's not supporting the PM function well, so if someone wants to PM the next person (Bored, I think), I'll just come back with a pick later when I can. EDIT: Okay, no one came up in the meantime, so I'm going defense again...now aiming for someone for my secondary. I'm looking for a sure tackler, a goddamn hard hitter and someone who will stop every potential "big play" from happening. Unfortunately, as a Niners fan growing up, this guy was the last guy you wanted on that Cowboy defense to pursue the ball. Strong Safety, Darren Woodson. 6'1", 219 lbs. 1,350 career tackles (Cowboys franchise record) 5 Pro Bowls ('94, '95, '96, '97 and '98) 4 All-Pro selections ('94, '95, '96 and '98)
  9. I did a quick wiki of Sexson out of boredom and found this weird piece of vandalism... Wait...what?
  10. This may just be a bit of a reach, but he's one of the last left tackles that's worth their salt. Lined up next to Wisniewski, Peyton Manning has nothing to worry about. Oh yeah, seeing this picture makes LT and RC ecstatic... Left Tackle, Chris Samuels. 6'5", 317 lb. 5 Pro Bowls (2001, 2002, 2005, 2006, 2007) All-Pro (2001) '99 NCAA Outland Trophy Winner
  11. The talk was keeping Kirk Hinrich to groom him as a two-guard - a guy who can't hit the broad side of a barn with his jumpshot. And do you honestly think he can guard a 2 , especially one that can create his own shot? This may be funnier than the Warriors' backcourt.
  12. Well, Lloyd didn't last. Damn. Great picks with Lloyd, Guy and Mitchell.
  13. To be fair, he has been a season-ticket holder for the Rays since their inception. Whenever the ESPN Radio crew brought him on, there was always a half-serious discussion on how the Rays were doing.
  14. I came thisclose to drafting Mecklenburg over Dean, but there's another guy out there in the pool who fits Karl's position perfectly for me. Fact is, I'd take him over a lot of linebackers already drafted, including one on my team. I took the risk of leaving "him" for another round because Dean was going to be scooped up. He WILL be taken with my next pick if he's around.
  15. Does someone here know how Favre unretiring affects his current contract? Does his contract go back on the cap? If so, why would the Packers want him as a back-up to Rodgers (with the money Favre would be making) unless it's just a big "fuck you" to Brett?
  16. Leslie O'Neal was a godsend for the Chargers because this guy left... Defensive End, Fred Dean... --2008 Hall of Fame Inductee --1981 UPI NFC Player of the Year --4 Pro Bowls ('79, '80, '81 and '83) --4 Times All-NFC and All-NFL ('79, '80, '81, '83) --2 Super Bowl rings (XVI, XIX) --Unofficial Career Sack total: 93.5 --In 1983, set then-record of (6) sacks in a game, while recording (17) sacks in the season. Re-uniting Dean and Coach Walsh, who raved about him. Here's a quote from Wiki, because I'm really understating his importance.
  17. Read about the weight-training story as a kid... Left Guard...and D-Tackle...Stan Jones. Chicago Bears (1954-1965) - Offensive captain. 6'1, 252 lb. Hall Of Fame Class of 1991 7 Pro Bowls ('55, '56, 57, '58, '59, '60 and '61) 4 All-NFL Selections ('55, '56, '59 and '60) --One of the first pros to develop and follow a weight-training program. He went from 140 at 15 to 250 at 20. Hahaha. --Was drafted a year before he would even be able to play in the NFL.
  18. Way to address that hole at the PG. They have no starter and no backup. Why start now? RE: Brand. I wouldn't be too pissed as a Clips fan with Brand's departure - Thornton had a strong rookie season and he would've been wasted with another year at the quasi-SF/PF/6th man. That said, losing Maggette after Brand is huge. Thornton would've been a great compliment to either guy that stayed, whether it was Thornton/Brand or Maggette/Thornton in the starting line-up. Now he's screwed, and the Clips' cap situation is screwed too. With the remaining cap space that the Clips now have, who else is out there to get? Deng? Josh Smith? Sterling has to know he has the inside track on signing Smith before today's signings. I think all would be forgiven if he does. And Turiaf just signed an offer sheet with the Warriors. 4 years/$17 million. And $10 mil a year for a guy (Maggette) who was willing to sign with teams for the mid-level exception. Holy shit, Chris Mullin is fucking insane.
  19. Deal. Thank you. I wouldn't draft Keith Bullock in an all-time Titans franchise draft, let alone ahead of picks in the same round of Nagurski, Mark May, Monk, Jason Taylor, Hutchinson, Zach Thomas and Dermontti Dawson. Damn. EDIT: And are we doing something after this draft in the vein of the NHL thread? I read something along the lines of - top 8 teams (as voted on by all teams) make it to the "playoffs", thereafter crowning a champion as determined by a round table of our resident NFL experts.
  20. I didn't pick any of these players either! And I wouldn't complain in any other circumstance knowing that you did have that contingency plan list, but you just drafted Russell Maryland knowing you had a 3-4 defense already.
  21. Tunnell was gone in the early rounds. EDIT: Also, I'm dropping CB's homer pick of Keith Bullock a few rounds ago, and selecting Cornelius Bennett.
  22. But c'mon, he will be starting for the Knicks though, right?
  23. Sorry, I was away for the whole day, but I still got my guy... 6'4", 305 pounds, Raider badass left guard Steve Wisniewski. Thirteen seasons. Eight Pro Bowls (1991-1996, 1998 and 2001). Voted to 1990 NFL All-Decade team. And most importantly, the winner of SI's "Dirtiest Player In The Game" in '97... Awesome. I'm proud to have him.
  24. Well, at least they realized they needed a point guard as bad as any team in the league -- I also wonder if they'll have the patience to start Gordon right away and have Mobley in the wings in case he fails. The Clips just went gained that "elite aura" after the recent depth chart I just read. They have 15 players on the roster, and that's before the Maggette trade.
  25. I'm going for offensive overload here -- two backs that can catch, with Craig able to block for LT if so be it, two HOF-worthy wideouts, a HOF tight end and Peyton Manning throwing to them.
