I'm curious, did you see the documentary Classic Albums: Metallica? It has a nice bonus piece on Newstead's original concept for the bass intro. He played the opening the way he intended it to be but you could tell he was not pleased that the other band members modified it. He didn't also seem happy about it being one of his only writing credits while in Metallica. It makes me wonder what his other ideas would have been like.

I think they have more problems than arenas and taping schedules. I'm not a huge Justin Credible fan but the way he was completely destroyed was unreal.

It makes no sense for Metallica to be this stubborn. They could easily gain an extra few million a year for allowing them to use the song. $10-13 is an insane demand. As stated before me, the song is 15 years old. It could give them an extra few million a year without having to do anything. That's a stupid business move.
