Devin Townsend - 'Terria' A high concept album with millions of ideas crammed in, but it holds it all together with beautiful songs and mind blowing structural tricks. Just the best, most high concept and consistently interesting record record I've ever heard. Fugazi - 'End Hits' The perfect meeting of punk and invention, blending traditional elements of Fugazi's quiet punk sound with slices of the rythm work from the world of hip hop and dub. Awesome songs too, so it all works brilliantly. Drive Like Jehu - 'Yank Crime' Complex, mental, random, heavy, passionate, punky, beautiful, stuff played by excellent musicians. Truly epic punk music. Ben Folds - 'Rockin' The Suburbs' Alright, it's cheesy, almost show tune esque stuff, but the talent and song writing skill is always present. It would be Ben Folds Five's debut album in this place, but it doesn't present the range of emotions that this release does, taking us from happy to sad whenever it feels like it. Rocket From The Crypt - 'Group Sounds' Just the best basic rock / punk album ever, does nothing different but every song is a classic. Beach Boys - 'Pet Sounds' Still one of the best, most inventive albums, ever. When you consider that this is the first time anyone like the Beach Boys attempted anything as experimental as this, it becomes even more incredible, and when you know of Brian Wilson's life it's even better. Perfect pop with a dark heart which makes it fascinating to listen to. Weezer - 'Pinkerton' Once again, perfect pop with a dark heart. Speaks to me personally more than any other record ever and is simply brilliant. And now for the slightly out there choices, these aren't for sure as I've just started getting into these types of music... Charles Mingus - The Very Best Of Charles Mingus I'm reluctant to put a 'best of' in here, but this is just so good. Perfect jazz, wonderfully written, catchy, hooks, all bothered about with in inventive and beautiful ways. You can hear the emotion in the playing, and there's too many classics here it's hard to take it all in. Tes - x2 This is just, by far, the best rap album I've heard up to this date. Stunning breaks, brilliant lyrics rapped with amazing speed covering a wide range of topics, brilliant and subtle use of beats, and never boring. Either Four Tet - 'Rounds' or Plaid - Rest Proof Clockwork Both are as good electronica as you will find, where Plaid is the more interesting and musically accomplished, Four Tet produces far more emotion in me, so you can take your pick. Black Lushus 0 Report post Posted April 18, 2004 I think it's funny everytime on eof these threads pop up how people come up with these obscure groups that little to no one has heard of...anyway, guess I'll be more mainstream with this one...some of the greatest albums I own are: Pearl Jam-Ten Guns N' Roses-Appetite For Destruction Dr. Dre-The Chronic A Perfect Circle-Mer De Noms Wu-Tang Clan-36 Chambers (or whatever that first album was called) Alice In Chains-Dirt Prodigy-Fat Of The Land And yes, I do have a large collection of CDs with obscure unheard of bands myself, but those albums always get play from top to bottom with no skipping and i enjoy them the same now as I did when I first heard them when they first came out years ago... These are the five best albums persnal to me, meaning I have gotten good repeat listening quality from them and they have special meaning to me. 1) "Whatever and Ever Amen" by Ben Folds Five. This is number one BY FAR. 2) "Aenima" by Tool. 3) "Nasty Little Thoughts" by Stroke 9. Not a technically great album by any means, but I've had it for years and still love it. 4) "Year of The Spider" by Cold. Typical Nu-metal? I say no. 5) "The Dark Side of The Moon" by Pink Floyd.
