Guest Edwin MacPhisto Report post Posted August 7, 2003 Off the top of my head, Prince - 1999, Love Symbol Good, but: I think both Purple Rain and Dirty Mind will show up in more people's collections, and are more representative of being 'essential,' even though 1999 has the first hiyuge singles. Not to say I don't listen to at least 2 or 3 of these albums every week. They'd be my essential Prince picks, though a casual can get by with just Purple Rain. U2 - The Joshua Tree and Achtung Baby R.E.M. - Automatic For The People And...most of the other truly "essential" albums I can think of have been popped off. To add much more that really *everyone* and not just music-obsessive dudes on the internet should own would be overkill. My best stretch at this point would be Depeche Mode's Violator, which is perfectly listenable on whatever level you want to take it at.
