ESPN Classic

Recommended Posts

When I watch ESPN Classic I try and watch the games that they air that I don't know the winner and I find that enjoyable. Sometimes I will Tivo classic NBA Playoffs, USFL, NFL games and the odd baseball game etc.

Yes they show no NFL games at all (except the NFL Films versions of them) as the NFL I think has held on to them for when the NFL Channel, or whatever it will be called, debuts. Other than that ESPN Classic is just about the best channel ever. Nine times out of ten I already know the winner or can take a good guess as to who wins (with the exception of USFL games) but I still find it fun to watch.

Unless you get someone like Steve Young, or Jim Kelly the USFL games don't interest me.

Oh come on don't like seeing Mike Rozier's failed pro career or Lee Corso coaching? :D

I was watching Boston play Los Angeles. There couldn't of been more 10,000 people at the Coliseum. I always thought the USFL was more popular than that.

I tend to watch Sportscentury if its over someone I like. Granted, its not always fun finding out EVERY legend in sports was a worthless son of a bitch but hell, its interesting.

The only thing about ESPN Classic that pisses me off is the fact that ESPN knows exactly how long each game they are going to play on the channel is. Yet they clip in order to follow the "normal" schedule (i.e. 8-10pm). You know how long everything lasts, so show the whole game.

If I had it I'd watch it if there was nothing else on or if I was doing odds and ends around the house -- right now with digital cable I'm using soem music channels and that video game station for that purpose. Hey, it beats cable news repeating the same headlines over and over and over again...

Oh, the glorious boxing they show. I only tune in when there's classic fights on, generally. I once saw some old-timey pro wrestling on there, too. "Moose" somebody *wore headhear and used it as a weapon* vs a hometown babyface, I gathered. Pretty solid on the mat, and the strikes were stiff, but it was slooooooow, and they did a lot of laying around in headscissors and headlocks. Fundamentally sound stuff as far as psychology goes, but it was boring.

I watch the hockey games, but that's really it. Most of the college games are either too old for my liking (nothing wrong with the 70s, but I don't really care enough about USC-Oklahoma from 1974 or whatever to watch all the way through).

My only pet peeve is when they give the final score away in the 'info' thing on digital cable. Nothing takes away the fun of a game that I haven't seen in a long time more than them blatantly saying 'Red Wings beat the Avalance 3-2 in Overtime'.

I was watching the Orioles-Yankees 1996 playoff game where the boy interfeers with the home run a few days ago. Having not seen that game since it first aired, it reminded me just how stupid the umpires were during that game. Most people only remember the famous Jefery Mayor (or whatever his name was) incident, but there were actually two incidents when the fans interfeered against the Orioles that weren't called. Really remarkable.

It's one of my favorite channels but I still have a few complaints. Like others have said, WAY to much college football. I want more Hockey defintely.

It also pisses me off that they don't show the whole baseball game. They only go to innings with major impact in them. Now some people find enjoyment from just watching old games with players from long ago on thier team. I like to hear when the announcers say something positive about a player but you realize how dumb it was now. I mean who doesn't like to watch Bobby Bonilla turn into a stiff in 1992 for the Mets. Just watching him screw up is interesting to me.

Oh, how I hate that my cable company doesn't have ESPN Classic. Even when I had digital cable for a few months my sophomore year, they STILL didn't get Classic. I have caught some stuff at my Dad's house, though.

I remember an Oregon State vs. Loyola Marymount basketball game. This was after Hank Gathers died, and Loyola had Bo Kimble while OSU had Gary Payton. I've never seen such a high-scoring college game. It was like 120-115 or something like that. I also saw a Denver-Utah NBA playoff game from John Stockton's rookie year, when he was the backup PG to Darrell Griffith. Stockton was like Steve Nash without the crazy shot selection, a whole lot faster than what people my age remember him as.

If I do get Classic, I'm going to be all up in the college football, college basketball and NBA games. And the boxing.

What's with the "Your Father's" ESPN Classic on weekdays mornings? What is that supposed to mean, or make it any different? All I've gathered is that there's a whole lotta Howard Cosell.

Yes I was wondering that this morning. They had the '87 Broncos video yearbook on. I thought to myself...I'm old enough to remember the '87 Broncos but I'm not a father yet.

I actually like the fact that ESPN Classic is showing a lot of college football, especially with college football starting. I'll tune in to the baseball games to see the players that I've only read about to this point. And I like watching the old time NBA games when the game was actually fast-paced. My only gripe is that they only show the NFL Films version of the NFL games rather than the actual games. But if they're saving that for an NFL channel, then I can live with it.

I remember on Friday nights ESPN Classic would show the old This Week In Football (not sure of the name) from the 1970's with Tom Brookshier and Pat Summerall going over the games of the previous week and previewing the next week games. I wonder if they still show it.

so is it like typical ESPN then.

Monday, Tuesday: Baseball

Wednesday Thursday: Football *college for one day*

Friday, Saturday: Basketball *college for one day.

Sunday: Lump all other sports together.

Possible exception if a big event is happening (olympics, augusta...etc)

and totaly shafts hockey out except for late night.

I love when they do the theme days. Like the Saturday before the baseball season started, they had 'Damn Yankees' weekend. It was great. They had classic games mixed in with some SportsCentury shows.

I loved it when ESPN Classic had the Pine Tar Game and Game 6 of the 1985 World Series on in the game day.

"We go to game seven!"

I'd say that Game 7 of the 85 series won't be played until they do the 'Complete asswhuppings day'

MOTLEY.. FOR THE TITLE

I was a big fan of "One Hit Wonders" day. They had the Pittsburgh v. Atlanta NLCS game, when Francisco Cabrera delivered the winner.

And, they had the Sportscentury on one of my favorite athletes ever. Mark Fidrych.
