It is. Joss admits it. On the commentary for Chosen he says he knows the ubies should be harder to beat and that the amulet is a major dues ex machina ending, but that he felt the meaning and themes of the story were more important than the magic and fighting.

 

That's his justification for why nobody seems to care that Anya and Spike died. He wanted a happy ending...but he also has a fetish for killing people...so he used "shorthand". Uh, ok Joss.

 

 

 

The Ubie thing isn't really that bad though, if you really watch Chosen. They are not really killing them left and right. It's more like holding them off. The Slayers kill a few, but it's mostly whoever has the Scythe. Xander doesn't kill any. Wood doesn't. Giles kills one. Dawn kills 3, but it's with sunlight. Andrew kills none. Spike kills none(and doesn't even have a weapon, WTF?). The goofiest thing is Anya, who kills two ubies and can sword fight like a master. She even kills one of the ubies by cutting them in the stomach!

So I just finished Home and am now done watching season 4 straight through. Kick ass season, my favorite one of Angel (may change when I see season 5 again). Only complaint: so much stuff in there that Jasmine didn't get a long enough run. 30 minutes into her first episode, Fred learns she is evil. Still, kick ass stuff.

 

Now for COMMENTARIES~!

I listened to Spin The Bottle commentary already. It's pretty funny. The stories about how everyone kept laughing was good.

I have a question for all of you. I'm trying not to read through this thread because I'm watching Season 4 for the first time now and I don't want to be spoiled. My question is I know there are cross over episodes this season but can you tell me which episodes are the cross over ones? I want to keep track so when Buffy comes out, I can rewatch those episodes again.

Buffy's "Lies My Parents Told Me" connects to Angel's "Orpheus" which then connects to Buffy's "Dirty Girls".

 

 

Then Angel's "Home" connects to Buffy's "End of Days" and then "Chosen".

 

 

They're all set up pretty loosely. It's more like a character from one goes to the other for a while then returns. There's no big complicated stories between them. You can understand what's going on perfectly.

 

 

 

There's also a part in Angel S4 where an Angel character calls a Buffy character on the phone, but there was nothing done about it on the actual Buffy show.

You mean when Angelus hear's a Slayer is in town, calls Dawn to see if Buffy is home, hangs up and figure's out it's Faith?

 

I was wondering if that'd be acknowledged on Buffy, as I've only seen the finale of Season 7.. ;)

guess we'll find out in November, cause I could of sworne she said something..

 

Back to Angel, I love in Release how Wes and Faith essentiall switched roles. I also got to say I'm digging the Angelus/Faith fight.

I think both could be the theme. Free will/choice is first brought to the forefront with the Las Vegas episode with the losing their destinies plot. It is also shown all throughout the season, not just with Jasmine but with Gunn killing Seidel, Gwen's actions, and stuff like bringing back Angelus because they don't think the Powers will help them.

 

But, Family could be a theme too. All of Cordelia's talk to Connor about them being a family leads heavily into Home. At the start of the season, they are a fractured family and it is brought up many times.

 

I think Free will/choice is the main theme, but family is also a theme (secondary) that has a case that could be made for it being the main theme.

Family is also brought up in Angel's fantasy world in Awakening.

 

 

I'm watching Release now. Seems like they kind of dropped Connor being part demon. Feels like they were going somewhere with that.

Love? That's what Heartthrob sets up. It fits in with his fatherly love and the Cordy ship.

Connor's demon nature was something else that was isolating him from people, which was a part of his story.

 

I think family is the main theme, as there's tons of other things involved. First, you go all the way back to Season Three in Heartthrob, and you get that spiel by the vamp about sacrifices for those you loved. And I think the two seasons are so interconnected that you have to look at it as one transcendent theme. Look at it as defining love, and Season 3 is about blood family and love, whereas Season 4 explores other love themes, the communal-type of family.

 

But with Season 4, the opening of "Deep Down" had that ideal family that Angel was hoping for (even Wes). Well, from there you see Angel keeping tabs on Connor, trying to come to terms with Wes, and trying to find Cordy. The whole season is about Angel trying to keep together his family, and in the end, he ends up selling them out to save them all, not just Connor. Despite the free will themes, Angel's ideal family is always what he's going for.

Hey mole, pm me about the season 5 vcd's.

 

Season Three was about putting together the family, essentially "what is love?", and then watching it all crumble. Season 4 is about picking up those bits and trying to salvage what is left.

 

Anyways, I've been watching a lot of Season 4 and I've found Gunn to be pretty interesting, with his deal about being the muscle, yet ending up much more clever than he ever thought he was. Taking into account the way they went with that the next season, I'm really loving the Gunn arc in Season 4.

Personally, I've always found Gunn to be one of the weakest main characters of the whole Buffyverse. Firstly, it never helped that Angel's writing team is mostly made up of middle-class white people who clearly have no idea what a streetwise black ex-gang member sounds like when he talks. Aside from that, the writing team hardly ever gave him anything interesting to do; his main starring plotline in the show, his lame, heatless relationship with Fred was nothing more than one long setup for her to get with Wes. When any of the Gunn-centered episodes (almost always about some demons haunting the inner city or something equally braindead) come on TV, I tend to turn on my Xbox. Shit, even Lorne tended to get better starring roles. Gunn only finally got watchable for me in S5, especially with the mini-arc about him being tortured in the hell dimension.

The best thing about Underneath is Illyria mentioning the world with nothing but shrimp.

 

 

 

I've been watching season 7 on FX again. I'm so hyped for the DVD set. It needs to come out NOW. I'm tired of waiting.
