SEATTLE FRASIERS VS PHILADELPHIA FREEDOM

GAME 1

It didn't take long for Philadelphia and Seattle to find the drama to make this an interesting series.

 

With the score tied 1-1 at the end of the regulation nine innings, the game poured over into the tenth inning, where Merlin McKnight and the Freedom shocked Raul Carrera as McKnight nailed a base hit, scoring Jared Yerby, Mike Cannington, and Frederick Nichols...though Merlin McKnight would later be gunned down by Manny Donato trying to make his three-RBI double into a three-RBI triple, the damage appeared to be done and over with, with Seattle hopeless to recover in Game 1.

 

However, it wasn't over yet. After a single to left from David Shiras, both Manny Donato and Jm Macias could not leave the infield, though Shiras was sacrificed to second by a grounder to the third baseman from Donato. Glynn Kortkamp then singled to left, scoring Shiras to make the score 4-2, as there was hope after all. Arne Snider then singled to the left-center gap, advancing Kortkamp to third. With runners on the corners and two outs, RJ Frost came up with the chance to be a hero.

 

And the chance was not wasted. Frost hit a booming shot, but it BARELY had enough juice to clear the wall, barely escaping over the left field line for a 3-run homerun as the Seattle fans rose to their feet with a roar, the game over just like that as Seattle clinched Game 1 with a 5-4 victory in ten innings!

 

Frost's late heroics ended a 2-for-4 day, his homerun representing his only run scored and also his only three runs batted in. So far in the postseason, Frost has batted .500 with four homeruns and eight runs batted in. But the real star was George Alongi, who not only kept Philly to six hits and one earned run, but also struck out six in a slim 93 pitches, earning player of the game and lowering his postseason ERA to a svelte 0.90.

Now in the North-South Conference Championship, LeBeau wasn't about to stop now. With a stellar eight-inning performance, allowing only three runs on five hits and striking out three while walking one, LeBeau captured his third victory with help from his Charlotte teammates, collecting a 5-3 victory in Game 1, inching within three wins of a berth into the SFBL Championship.

 

Charlie Matthews fell a homerun short of the cycle, hitting a single, a double, and a triple in a 3-for-4 effort, scoring twice and driving in one run with his triple. Joseph Corbin, unfortunately, didn't have the same luck, finishing 0-for-4 again as his batting average continues to plummet in the postseason, now at a highly disappointing .160. LeBeau remained in the game through the eighth inning, finally being replaced in the ninth inning in favor of closer Henry Coleman, who closed the door on the Ignition for his third save of the postseason.

 

Colt Cavan went 3-for-4, driving in two runs and scoring once himself as he earned Player of the Game over Charlie on virtue of his having driven in more runs.

Philadelphia only needed one inning to put away Seattle. With a six-run inning in the top of the ninth, Philadelphia jumped out to a 9-1 lead. Seattle attempted a comeback, but came up with only three runs in a 9-4 loss that evens the best-of-seven series between the two teams at one game a piece.

 

Patricio Diez remains flawless in the postseason, pitching seven innings of baseball and allowing one run on six hits while striking out three. He improves his record to 3-0, and will be back for Game 5. Jose Ayala didn't do so badly himself for the Frasiers, allowing only two runs on ten hits in six innings of work. However, those two runs in the six innings were more than Seattle could muster until the ninth inning, when they finally managed to score more runs after a first inning which saw them take an early 1-0 lead on Glynn Kortkamp's solo homerun.

 

Tim Righini gave up a huge number of runs--five, to be exact, on only two hits, walking three in two innings in what was an absolutely atrocious outing. Raul Carrera came in the ninth inning when Righini had given up one run already and had intentionally walked Jerrod Mauder to load the bases. Carrera would later allow two runs, one earned on two hits before finally getting out of the inning. Most of the runs that crossed the plate when Carrera came on in relief were accredited to Righini's terrible peformance.

 

RJ Frost went 1-for-4, lowering his postseason batting average to .464. Mike Barnwell tried to be the catalyst of a Seattle comeback in the ninth, hitting a three-run homerun with two outs in the ninth, and there were runners on the corners for Jm Macias three batters later, but Macias grounded out to the second baseman to end the game.

After a couple of rough starts, Jayce Ross finally seemed to have his act together and looked to be putting together a fine start. Unfortunately, Charlotte couldn't give him the run support to put him in position for a victory.

 

Adelardo Rocha came on in relief...and the Ignition were all over him. James Mobley doubled down the left field line and then was replaced with a pinch runner who would later score on a sacrifice fly two batters later, Indianapolis taking a 3-2 lead after being tied at 2-2 after five innings. Charlotte then went down in order as Indy picked up a Game 2 victory, evening the series with the Harlots at one game a piece.

 

Joseph Corbin went 1-for-4, scoring once and striking out once. Charlie Matthews went 0-for-4, drawing one walk and striking out once as his batting average went to .300.

 

Jayce Ross pitched eight innings, allowing two runs on four hits, walking five and striking out seven. It was a fine performance, and worthy of Player of the Game accolades, but he finished with a no decision nonetheless.

Ann Onita (SEA) at Doug Safwat (PHI)

 

After splitting two games at home with the Freedom, the Frasiers hit the road and got off to a good start, as Ann Onita pitched a no-hitter until the seventh inning and finished the game allowing only one run on three hits as Seattle exploded late with two runs in the sixth and four in the seventh, taking a 8-4 victory despite some late runs from Philadelphia.

 

Ann's no-hitter was broken up by a leadoff homerun in the bottom of the seventh, after a four run inning in the top half of the seventh gave Seattle a 8-0 lead. Mike Cannington and Merlin McKnight would both later hit doubles off Onita, but they both were for naught as Jerrold Mauder lined one at Jm Macias, who caught the ball to throw Mauder out and then stepped on second base to double up Cannington. McKnight's double would leave him on base after Timm Williams grounded out to the first baseman. Ann Onita would mow down the Freedom in the 8th 1-2-3 before finally stepping out of the game in the ninth inning to be replaced by Tim Righini. Righini would go on to give up three runs, most of them crossing the plate after he left the game for Javier Arocha, who was able to stop the bleeding before it got out of control and finished the game with a 4-run lead instead of a seven-run lead.

 

RJ Frost got the scoring started for Seattle with a 2-run homerun in the fourth inning, his fifth homerun of the postseason and his ninth and tenth RBI of the postseason. Frost's homerun was his only hit in the game, however, as his batting average moved to .438.

George Alongi (SEA) at C.J. Bulot (PHI)

 

Not only did George Alongi pitch a mighty fine game of baseball, but Tim Righini managed to avoid blowing it for the Frasiers. The Seattle offense did the rest, romping all over the Freedom and finishing them off with a 8-0 victory that sets up Game 5 as sink or swim for Philadelphia, facing elimination in the East-West Conference Championship.

 

Alongi pitched six and one-third innings, allowing no runs to cross the plate on four hits while walking two batters and striking out three. However, the pitch count rose far too quickly, and Alongi was pulled after walking Jed Goude with one out. Righini entered the game and promptly got Josue Castro to ground into a double play to double up Timm Williams on first.

 

Righini then went on two pitch another two innings, allowing only one hit in his relief work and finally proving that he belongs in the Seattle bullpen. For his efforts, his postseason ERA dropped to 14.00, still unacceptable but more acceptable than it was after the last few terrible outings.

 

There was plenty happening on Seattle's offensive side, but none of it was coming from RJ Frost. The Velvet Hammer went 0-for-5, dropping his batting average to .378. Most of the offense came from Jm Macias, who, along with hitting a 3-run homerun with two outs in the eighth inning, also collected two more hits and two more RBI, drawing two walks in a 3-for-3 day. Alongi and Righini's combined five-hitter featured two doubles, one each from Jared Yerby and William Walker. Both doubles went nowhere and the two men were stuck on base.

Philadelphia was determined to not be eliminated, but Seattle had the willpower to not let this series go any longer than it should, especially noticing that Charlotte/Indianapolis was in a tangled web and that it would at least go to six games.

 

Seattle got rocked early, facing a 7-1 deficit after four innings. The final five innings proved to be all Seattle, however, as they shutout the Freedom for all five and scored eight runs in the final three innings, ending Philadelphia's playoff run with a 9-7 victory.

 

Patricio Diez had another impressive outing, but ended with a no-decision despite pitching six innings, allowing 1 earned run on six hits.

 

RJ Frost went 1-for-5 in the game, scoring once and driving in two runs and taking his batting average down to .357. Jm Macias was once again the player of the game, going 3-for-5, while scoring twice and driving in one run.

 

Seattle will now advance to the SFBL Championship to face the winner of the Charlotte Harlots/Indianapolis Ignition series.

Correy Hurst (CHA) at Yogi Hisahsi (IND)

 

Two days after losing Game 2 to even the series, Charlotte didn't want fate to strike twice, only up 3-2 in the ninth inning. So the Harlots exploded, scoring an amazing eight runs in the ninth inning as Charlotte then cruised to victory 11-2, breaking the tie to move up two-games-to-one in the best-of-seven series.

 

Two starts after throwing the first no-hitter in SFBL postseason history, Hurst pitched seven innings, allowing one run on six hits in the winning effort.

 

But the real story in Game 3 was Joseph Corbin. "The Bolt" has struggled all throughout the postseason, but he came up big here, hitting two solo homeruns in a 3-for-4 effort, scoring three times and driving in three runs as well. His batting average has now improved to .242, and Joseph now has the most homeruns of any player on his team in the postseason. Paul Cannington, the leader in RBI for that Harlots, was no slouch himself, going 2-for-5 but making his at-bats count as he scored once and drove in four runs, including a double in the ninth inning that cleared the bases.

 

Charlie Matthews improved his batting average to .314 with a 2-for-5 day that saw him scoring twice and driving in one run, including a solo homerun in the sixth inning.

Eric LeBeau certainly didn't pitch a bad game, but he just couldn't come up with the run support that he needed. Joe Larkin brought in two runs for the Ignition and Brad Hafner pitched 7 1/3 innings of shutout baseball, allowing only four hits and striking out ten as his bullpen did the rest, evening up the series with the Harlots at two games a piece with a 3-0 shutout of Charlotte.

 

Joseph Corbin and Charlie Matthews went 1-for-4 and 1-for-3, respectively, with Matthews drawing a walk. Indy actually only got six hits to Charlotte's five, but the hits were big ones and Charlotte couldn't make their hits do what Indianapolis was doing with theirs.

 

LeBeau fell to 3-1, his ERA at 2.97 as he pitched all eight innings, allowing six hits and three earned runs while walking three and striking out six.

Two pitchers finally get their decisions in this game, though Jayce Ross comes out on top as Charlotte wins 5-1, with the chance to end the series back at the Brothel in two days.

 

Ross pitched eight innings, allowing one run on seven hits. Charland lasted five and one-third innings, allowing three runs on five hits as his record fell to 1-1 in the postseason, with a 3.00 ERA. Ross' ERA fell to 3.25.

 

Charlie Matthews went 2-for-4, scoring once and driving in one run, while Joseph Corbin drew a walk in a 0-for-3 day.

GAME 6

 

Yogi Hisahsi (IND) at Correy Hurst (CHA)

 

Charlotte turned on their offense, and the rest is basic sluganomics.

 

Ben Cruz went 3-for-4, driving in four RBI and hitting two dingers as Charlotte stopped a late rally from Indy dead in its tracks, winning the game and the North-South Conference Championship by the score of 12-8, taking the Championship in six games.

 

Back in the Brothel, Charlotte scored in the second, third, fifth, sixth, seventh, and eighth innings, amassing a 12-5 lead going into the final inning. The Ignition scrapped together three runs in the top half of the inning, but Benji Cabello continued to apply the pressure on the Ignition, and his pitching eventually got them to fold.

 

Charlie Matthews scored twice and drove in two runs in a 1-for-3 night, drawing two walks as his batting average moved to .333 with two homeruns and eleven runs batted in in the postseason. Joseph Corbin, on the other hand, struck out three times but salvaged one hit in a one-for-five night, dropping his batting average to .222.

 

Paul Cannington added two RBI for the Harlots, taking his postseason total to an amazing eighteen.

2015 SFBL LEAGUE CHAMPIONSHIP

 

GAME 1

 

Eric LeBeau (CHA) at George Alongi (SEA)

 

Once again, Eric LeBeau certainly didn't pitch a BAD game, but George Alongi pitched a better game, and the Charlotte offense was...offenseless.

 

Seattle pulled together three runs against LeBeau, and that was all they needed as Alongi and the Seattle bullpen did the rest, capturing a victory in Game 1, much to the delight of the home fans, by the score of 3-to-1.

 

Frost was 0-for-4 in Game 1, falling to .326 in the postseason. Both Charlie Matthews and Joseph Corbin were 0-for-4 as well for the Harlots, certainly not helping LeBeau's run support. In fact, the only Charlotte run came in the first inning when Paul Cannington grounded into a fielder's choice, sacrificing Colt Cavan home. After that, George Alongi turned everything off for Charlotte, and the bullpen helped with that, keeping the door shut for three relief innings, including a save from closer Raul Carrera.

Although the norm has been for Seattle to lose their second game at home, that was not the case with this postseason series.

 

Three big innings in the first four innings were enough to give Seattle a big 14-4 lead on Charlotte, and the Harlots simply could not recover as Jayce Ross and the Harlots were shelled 14-6, already down 2-0 as the series moves to Charlotte for the next three games.

 

For Charlotte, the run support was simply there a game too late. Charlie Matthews went 3-for-5, scoring once as his batting average moved to .333. Joseph Corbin went 1-for-3, driving in one run and scoring once, his hits including a triple in the second inning with no one on and two outs, his first three-bagger of the postseason. Matthews also hit his 7th double of the postseason.

 

The star of the show was none other than RJ Frost, however, going 3-for-5, crossing the plate three times and driving in three runners. One of his hits brought in all three of those RBI, a three-run homerun in the first inning representing his sixth homerun of the postseason and his thirteenth, fourteenth, and fifteenth runs batted in. Arne Snider would hit a grand slam in the very next inning as a part of a five run inning, bringing his totals to six homeruns with thirteen RBI. Glynn Kortkamp was the only Seattle starter to not drive in a run, going 0-for-4 on a night where everyone seemed to be getting hits.

Ann Onita (SEA) at Correy Hurst (CHA)

 

Sweep of the Harlots? Return to sender. Address unknown.

 

Already down two-zero in the best-of-seven series to decide the league champion, Charlotte managed to squeak out two runs in the third and seventh innings, sending Onita into the Frasiers' clubhouse with her first loss of the 2015 postseason, a 4-3 defeat as Charlotte slips back within one game of the defending SFBL Champions who are looking for a repeat performance.

 

Seattle scored first, in the top of the second inning, and it looked like Ann Onita and the Seattle defense would do the rest. However, the Harlots managed to scatter five hits off Onita, bringing it all together for four earned runs to bring Onita's postseason ERA up to 2.86.

 

RJ Frost went 1-for-4, scoring once in the game as the Velvet Hammer has now crossed the plate thirteen times in the postseason. Charlie Matthews managed two hits, and crossed the plate two of the three times he reached base--he drew a walk along with his two hits. "The Bolt," meanwhile, was 1-for-4 with a strikeout and a stolen base, the latter stat his second of the postseason.

These two returned to face each other in a rematch from Game 1, this time with Charlotte having the momentum of having a win in Game 3 and also being surrounded by Harlot fans in the Brothel.

 

Now, there are nine innings a game.

 

When your team is the Seattle Frasiers, however, all it takes is one inning to change the whole course of the game. Seattle opened LeBeau up with a six-run top of the fifth--none of the runs earned--and Seattle held on for the ride as Charlotte could only cut the lead in half with a three-run eighth inning, winning Game 4 with a chance to finish the series in Charlotte, up three-games-to-one in the series.

 

RJ Frost went 0-for-4 in the game, as did Joseph Corbin on the other side for Charlotte. Matthews salvaged a hit in a 1-for-5 performance, but really could do little to help the hapless Charlotte, who seem ripe for the elimination in Game 5.

Charlotte had a 2-1 lead after five innings, and there was hope in the Brothel. And in one of those defining strokes of the game, Seattle silenced the rowdy Charlotte fans with one swing, leading off the seventh inning with a bang from Oscar Ortiz' stick and a ball that landed four hundred and thirty-six feet later as the game-tying run, as a collapse seemed inevitable. In the eighth, the collapse was there. Jayce Ross couldn't hang on, suffering his fourth and final loss in the postseason, as Charlotte was mercifully eliminated by the far superior Seattle Frasiers by a score of 6-2, Seattle rallying hard in the final three innings to take the lead and then to put distance between them and the North-South Conference Champions.

 

In the final game of the series, RJ Frost drew two walks in an 0-for-2 day, finishing the postseason with a respectable .311 average, good enough for third among his teammates. For Charlotte, Charlie Matthews was 1-for-3 with an RBI and drew a walk himself, hitting a double in the fifth inning off Jose Ayala. Matthews finished with a very nice .333 average, two homeruns, and twelve RBI. Corbin finished with four homers and six RBI, but an atrocious .188 batting average as he finished with another 0-for-4 day, striking out twice.

 

Although Oscar Ortiz' shot silenced the Harlots for the remainder of the game, it was Manny Donato who really killed Charlotte in this final game. Going three-for-four with two RBI, scoring once, Donato had a fine game to finish as the final Player of the Game of the season.

Rhodes wins Fresh Fish Award

 

Montreal's second baseman Brandon Rhodes has worked hard to reach the big leagues. His work paid off today as the East-West named him the Fresh Fish Award winner! Brandon has gone 145 for 555 (.261) this season, hitting 23 taters and driving in 77 runs. He has scored 88 runs on his own.

 

Henderson wins Big Stick Award

 

The North-South Big Stick Award goes to Robert Henderson this year. He had an extraordinary season, featuring a batting average of .400 (248 hits in 620 AB), 32 doubles, 9 triples and 48 homeruns. Henderson collected 143 RBI and 139 runs as well. He's 1st in the North-South in batting, 2nd in homeruns and 1st in RBI! Henderson wins the award for the 2nd time in his 7-year career.

The two top teams from each division after the three days of Stage 1 advance to Stage 2, and one team from each conference that didn't finish in the top two of their division but still performed well in Stage 1 will advance to Stage 2.

 

With those fourteen teams, the top two performing teams will be given a bye into the second round, the other twelve teams competing in a one-game playoff to determine who will advance to the next round. These one-game series will continue all the way up to the finals between the remaining two teams.
