There was a time when I thought that bowling was the poorest excuse for a sport being shown on ESPN. I can now state that in the past tense.

You thought of bowling before the Spelling Bee?

Seeing as how it's on ESPN I believe (or TSN in Canada) I figure this could go under sports. Anyways, wanna know what everyone thinks of it. This is the first year I've caught it and I think it's just awesome. Entertaining television.

I worked at the Borgata Casino for a while and, Jesus, people would crowd around the TV watching that stupid thing.

Baseball and football got nothing --- but friggin' POKER and you'd have crowds.

Nothing beats a 12 y/o girl orgasming for the first time, on television

Philistine. :P

I guess playing poker makes it more watchable, but I watch the WSOP whenever it's on. It's fascinating to see the strategy involved in playing the hands, the bluffs, the acting jobs, etc. Very entertaining television, and I wish I had the Travel Channel so I could watch more of it.

Sure, it's taped, and sure, it's not the most obvious of things to show on ESPN, but if you watch it, you're hooked. It must be because anyone can play poker or something.

Phil Hellmuth is an ass, though. And though Phil Ivey is apparently the Tiger Woods of poker, from the World Series of Poker and World Poker Tour shows you'd think that he's more like the Phil Mickelson of poker.

Hellmuth rocks. He gets a little bitchy when he loses to inferior hands, but then again, who likes losing in those situations? Hellmuth makes fun of himself (and his reputation) on his website, and his book about poker playing is recommended for anyone looking to improve their game.

Lord knows we have to bump WSOP for a 39th hour of SC.

This thread had me thinking about the old days when ESPN2 first started. Remember when they would constantly air street hockey tourneys and stuff that only three people would watch. I miss those days.

Don't forget about the Dirt Bike stuff and Strong Man competitions from the 70s and 80s

Nathan Jones was in some of the Strong Man shows and looked like a fool. On one show he broke his wrist arm wrestling or he would pull a muscle during one of the strength test like the anchor pull.

The main thing is, Poker is not a sport

Neither are bowling, 9-ball, or spelling bee. I'd kick any of those off the schedule before poker.

From what I've seen and read, I think it's a bit overrated, myself. I can think of a dozen books I'd get before that one. I may pick it up sometime just to be a completist, but I'm not going to be falling all over myself for it.

I just picked up Positively Fifth Street last week in Vegas...the poker sections in that are excellent. Well worth picking up.

I'd kick them all off and send them to the island of misfit TV programs
