I've been checking out a bunch of brands lately in my quest to make the perfect Gibson (a martini that takes a cocktail onion instead of an olive - much better than it sounds). I make them all 8:1 gin:vermouth, using Martini & Rossi dry vermouth and those 'tipsy onions' that are spiked with vermouth. (Very nice, incidentally.)

Bombay Sapphire: A little flat for my taste. I'd take a sip and just wonder when the flavor was going to kick in. Perfectly acceptable, but possibly a bit too complex for my palate. Either that or just not flavored well.

Tanqueray: A Perfectly Acceptable Gin. Very nice, and definitely something I'll drink again.

Seagrams: I love it. The flavor is very bright without being annoying, and it goes well with the flaver of the onion. Possibly a bit too much bite, but right now I'm leaning on it.

So, basically, I'm enjoying the cheapest gin the most. Something seems wrong here. Any other brand suggestions from fellow TSMers?

A few weeks ago I was drinking with friends, and took about 20 oz worth of this twenty year old gin I had to make some gin and juice. The stuf was great. The name escapes me at the moment. It was Sch____manns or something.

It was pretty good.

And now we all sit back and wonder why, exactly, Agent knows what cologne tastes like.

He's got a point though. I have never tasted cologne myself, but I know that Gin tastes like it. That being said, Gin and Tonics are my 3rd favorite mixed drink following Vodka and Cranberry, and Whiskey and Cokes (preferably Irish Whiskey.)

I'm not a huge gin fan - I tend to go for long stretches when i can't face it - but I've found that Gordon's is pretty decent. Gin and orange juice is also one of the most efficient ways to get a large amount of alcohol into you in a short amount of time, and regret it almost immediately.

Desperate times call for desperate measures...

Seriously though, y'know if you inhale some leftover cologne vapor through your mouth...that bitter, acrid stinktaste that gets left at the back of your tongue..that's what gin tastes like to me.

I don't see a problem with that. Sometimes it's what you mix with your primary liquor that makes the drink (e.g. Tropicana with cheap vodka > Grey Goose with frozen concentrate)

I heard a lot about Bombay Sapphire, and after trying it I can't see it either. I prefer Tanqueray, which seems to blend well with tonic...

Update.

I've been tweaking the vermouth level in my Bombay Sapphire gibson. Using slightly less seems to make it taste better, but I still prefer my 8:1 Seagram's.
