MrRant Posted November 4, 2003 Report Posted November 4, 2003 WASHINGTON - Democrat Al Sharpton, whose one-liners and pointed rhetoric have added laughs to the presidential campaign, will host "Saturday Night Live" next month. Sharpton will host the Dec. 6 show, which also will feature Pink as the musical guest. It could be a natural fit for the preacher, who often uses humor to promote his long-shot candidacy and is known to crack up his rivals during debates. "He said he was actually _ for the first time _ nervous," said Sharpton spokeswoman Rachel Noerdlinger. Other political figures who have appeared on the show include Arizona Republican Sen. John McCain, Jesse Jackson and former Vice President Al Gore. Although none of Sharpton's rivals for the Democratic nomination have been on, at least three have been depicted. Actors playing John Kerry, John Edwards and Joe Lieberman courted a real Gore for the vice presidency during Gore's appearance on the show last year

It ended up being the second best show of the season. The Steve Forbes show was also good. Sharpton has a sense of humour and I think this is a good thing. They can do a lot of political sketches, which I always thought was SNL's strongpoint. This also means Jim Downey will probably be doing some writing that week- and that's a good thing

Sharpton came to speak at my school, and while half of his ideas are way out-there and there's no way he's should win the Dem nomination, he's a wonderful speaker and he's got great comic timing. I also think he's ballsy enough to go along with whatever political jokes they throw him.
bob_barron Posted November 4, 2003 Report Posted November 4, 2003 Did Bob Dole ever host the show, or was he just a one-sketch-only guest a couple of times Bob Dole appeared in two skits in the November 16th, 1996 episode hosted by Robert Downey, Jr.- He was in the cold opening and Weekend Update- each time with Norm Macdonald. This is going to be wonderful and'll mark the first time I tune into SNL this year. Sharpton came to speak at my school, and while half of his ideas are way out-there and there's no way he's should win the Dem nomination, he's a wonderful speaker and he's got great comic timing. I also think he's ballsy enough to go along with whatever political jokes they throw him I assume Sharpton is doing this to show how cool he is and all that- so I'm sure there will be lots of self-deprecating humour.
