SNL Review- Andy Roddick/Dave Matthews

Sports Report-

Leafs- I think that the 7-1 drubbing gave them a good kick in the teeth as they have not lost since. I was actually at tonight’s game against Edmonton and they played with a lot of fire. The defence has really stepped up and it’s good to Eddie actually getting some help. They go on a long road trip now and I hope they don’t falter.

Canucks- They have just been unstoppable recently and still have yet to lose at home. Dan Cloutier has also really stepped up and may be blossoming into the quality goaltender that the Canucks need him to be. It’s also good to see the Sedins finally showing off their potential and Jason King is blossoming into a great player.

The 2003 Stanley Cup Champion New Jersey Devils- They’re off to a solid unspectacular start but I’m digging the 6 game unbeaten steak. Beating Ottawa again always makes me happy. The offence really needs to step up though. A defencemen should not be your top points getter.

New Orleans Saints- These guys love to tease me. But that’s the life of being a Saints fan. I still can’t believe they beat Tampa so maybe there is life left to this team. So of course after the biggest win of the season- they get a bye week to capitalise on the momentum.

New Jersey Nets- They’re off to an okay start but this is without Kenyon Martin- who I believe is the heart and soul that drives the New Jersey team. I hope he comes back soon so this Nets team can start kicking some ass again.

Bob, just read your review on the smarkboard (and of course SNL.com) and it was solid as always. Now I've read you reviews for about 3 years now and I don't agree with a lot of the things you say, but I really enjoy reading your work. I think you once said (or maybe you were quoting Lorne on this one) that people will always think the cast they grew up on will forever be the best. To me, NOTHING will top SNL from Sept. 91 -May 95, NOTHING. Hell, I e-mailed you once defending the 94-95 season and I will say to the end of eternity that season was not really that bad and had several shining moments. I grew up on Sandler, Farley, Hartman, Rock, Myers, Carvey, Spade, Norm, Schneider, etc and I knew in Sept. 95 when the overhaul happened that SNL would never be the same for me. The show had changed and not for the better in my opinion. I used to feel a rush when the show was about to start during those years and now I don't get that rush. The only time I got that feeling was when Farley hosted in Oct. 97 and when Sandler did the cold opening last November. I'm including this because I want to rant about females on SNL. You claim that SNL is no longer a boys club, using Tina's rise to power as your primary example. Now during 91-95, there was absolutely no question that the show was a boys club, NO QUESTION. The show was dominated by the male cast members and female members were reduced to playing small roles and rarely got any of the great punchlines or overall good material. I remember Julia Sweeney on that E Special on SNL told a story that she had written this sketch that she was very proud of and thought was very funny and it got cut because Sandler thought of a new song right before the show. She knew she was going to leave the second she found out her sketch was cut. My point is that SNL was a boys club and I still believe SNL is a boys club.

Bob, since Shannon, Gasteyer, Oteri left the show they have practically fallen off the radar screen. Yes, I know that Molly has had several supporting roles and that Oteri had a sitcom deal and did a few guest spots on Curb Your Enthusiasm and a small role in Scary Movie, but they really did not capitalize on the success they had on SNL. Gasteyer, as you know, will costar in Mean Girls, the script Tina wrote, and has made several guest appearances, including on Frasier. Now these women dominated SNL from about 96-2000, DOMINATED and yet they don't get the major roles. Horatio Sanz, who got much less airtime than those 3 during their time on the show together, got lead or semi-lead roles in Boat Trip and TomCats and I'm sure will have roles lined up. Will Ferrell is probably going to be the next 20 Million Dollar Comedic Lead and you know Jimmy is going to get film roles, you know it. Tracy Morgan is getting his own sitcom and I bet will land a few film roles. After their careers on SNL are over, do you think Maya is going to be a huge star? Dratch? I love her to death, but Amy? They will end up like Oteri, Sweeney, Curtain, Newman, Duke, Hooks, Jackson, Shannon, Hutzel, Walls, Dunn, the list goes on and on. SNL is still a boys club and will always be one. What did Rob Schneider do to separate himself from the females cast members, nothing really, but he gets leads in films. SNL is a forum to create male comedic stars, it always has been and always will be. Murray, Belushi, Chase, Akroyd, Murphy,Carvey, Sandler, Hartman, Farley, Spade, Myers all got that big push while the their female costars couldn't find work. Tina might be working hard to shatter this glass ceiling and her movie got the green-light, but I'm worried this will be the only chance she gets. To come full circle, SNL might not be the same for me anymore, but there is one commonality, it is still a boys club. Just needed to rant and I would LOVE to hear from you, because I know you are going to disagree.

Well there’s no rule that says you have to write short letters. First off- thanks for the kind words. The cast from 91-95 is really not all that great. I place it below the 95-97 and 86-90 casts which were filled with talent from top to bottom. The 91-95 cast well had Janeane Garafalo. The 94-95 cast was bad- I’ve seen the reruns and aside from Norm- they have nothing. I can understand not liking a new cast- change is hard to deal with. Do I feel the same rush that I did in 1996 when SNL would come on? No- but I still look forward to most SNLs when they come on since I look forward to seeing my favourites in action. SNL was a boys club from 91-95- there is no denying that. But then again look at the females they had on the show. They all sucked.

Molly hasn’t fallen off the radar. She gets a lot of movie roles and is always in the news. Ana Gasteyer is concentrating on her stage work. Cheri had a sitcom deal with CBS that did not pan out. Horatio got 2 lead roles and they both flopped tremendously. He won’t get another one. Jimmy needs that movie he’s shooting with Queen Latifah to do really well. Don’t knock Jane Curtin’s post-SNL career. She was on two long running critically acclaimed shows and I’m sure she made a lot of money off both of them. Nora Dunn is in tons of movie roles- so she’s doing fine. What did Rob Schneider do? Befriend Adam Sandler. It’s not SNL’s fault they all got film careers- you could blame Hollywood as a whole for being sexist.

SNL isn’t a boys club today. Tina gets more press then anyone and is all over the place- she’s a woman. Maya Rudolph gets more airtime then almost anyone- woman. And the other two females both get a lot of good airtime. SNL used to be a boys club but Tina has done a ton to erase that stereotype.

Greg Haledjian writes-

Hey, this is Greg Haledjian, old reviewer from last season when

everyone

elses reviews were good and I'd just like to say you are doing a really

good

job this year. For some reason everyone likes making there reviews

short and

boring, I used to do the old format of long reviews and those were the

ones

people liked in my opinion. So, if you decided to stop the long reviews

and

go to short ones, defiently go back to it. Also, I agree on Horatio

Sanz.

He's been the biggest dissapointment over the last 6 years. I think

everyone

was waiting for a Farley type person, but instead we got Rob Schneider,

which yeah, you can probably assume what I mean by that. Alright, gotta

run,

but great reviews, keep them going man. Later- Greg Haledjian

Once again- thank you for the kind words. I make my reviews nice and long because my reviews are really the only place I can vent about stuff. I know some people do find it annoying but I’ve tried writing shorter stuff and it just doesn’t work. I didn’t really have any expectations for Horatio so I wouldn’t call him a disappointment. A waste of time? Yes.

Chad Ruffner writes-

Hi Bob,

You said In a previous SNL Review that

you hated the entire 1998-1999 Season of SNL. Care to

elaborate as to why? I know some that regard that

Season as one of SNL's best. The Bill/Monica Stuff

practically wrote Itself. Just curious.

Later,

Chad

Just because it had easy stuff to make fun of doesn’t mean it was any good. John Goodman was on way too much and got less funny each time. They did have some really good shows like Cameron Diaz, Alec Baldwin, Ray Romano and others but look at the garbage they put out. That season was just so depressing to watch. Even the Best Of was really bad.

A Minute with Stan Hooper

A Minute with Stan Hooper:

How good a show can be when they try to be funny…

Last week I found Stan Hooper to be a great new show. It didn’t have a lot of laugh out loud scenes but it did its job. A show like A Minute with Stan Hooper needs to establish all its characters while at the same time making the show funny enough. It’s a tough task but given the talent involved- they can and have done it.

Aside from Ryan- most of the characters are pretty well established now- and now the show can bring the funny and it brought it in spades tonight.

It’s amazing watching Norm’s transformation here. The first episode he seemed a bit unsure on how to play Stan- now he knows. And instead of being the straight man who watches the action and comments- Norm was funny as well tonight. The comment about women voting was classic Norm. Fear not Norm fans- while our hero from Dirty Work has changed- Norm has shown signs that he’s not completely done away with and it’s for the better.

The stupidity of Waterford Falls is a bit disconcerting at first but Norm is using them to their full comic extent. While the women not being allowed to vote story was a bit absurd- it did provide for a lot of great and humorous lines. While I’d like to see the people of Waterford Falls be given a little more credit- in the end I don’t care- as long as its funny.

The first scene was great. As long as it doesn’t wear thing I’d love for them to do a segment like that every week. It’s an easy way to open up the show with a laugh and it gets the viewer sucked in and laughing.

Now for my complaints on the show:

Max Wright looked awful tonight- I guess someone’s been snorting a bit too much. He was given one scene to showcase his stuff and he failed. Norm and Max didn’t have the chemistry that they had on Norm- and I think that’s because he played such a pussy here tonight. At least Max stood up to Norm on ‘Norm’.

Reagan Dale Neis has got to go. The show has enough stupid small towners- she’s not really needed. Her relationship with Ryan isn’t necessary. Ryan already has two storylines on the show: Her character just holds Ryan back from two potential storylines.

I also would’ve liked to have seen the Ryan lives with Stan relationship explored a bit more but they only have 22 minutes.

Other stuff:

I was right about Norm not overusing the butler. He was only on for a couple seconds and was really funny. I hope this trend continues.

The show was just hilarious tonight. The stuff with the Communist was hilarious- in fact I LOVED the whole debate. Norm has a great interaction with the people of Waterford Falls. He plays the straight man to perfection. If tonight is an indication- I’m really looking forward to seeing more of the Stan v. small town storylines.

Kudos to Fred Willard, Daniel Peterson and Garrett Dillahunt. Dillahunt had a lot more material to work with and I’m starting to enjoy him. Willard and Peterson were great as always.

It doesn’t look like Penelope Ann Miller is going to be very funny. I don’t mind it since there are many other people who are there just to be funny. She’s not.

This episode was MUCH better then the first one- which was no slouch itself. I hope the week by week trend of the show getting funnier continues- cause we could be in for a real treat.

Cold Opening

Cast- Rachel Dratch, Amy Poehler

Thoughts- A nice way to start the show. I especially enjoyed the See You Next Tuesday joke- that got a really big laugh out of me. Making it two minutes though? You could’ve milked this skit for a little while longer and it could’ve been a lot funnier. Rachel did a really good Barbara Walters impression and I enjoyed Amy’s Martha Stewart. But this skit didn’t have anytime to get going and was ended way too abruptly. **1/2

Monologue

Cast- John McEnroe, Andy Roddick, Finnese Mitchell, Tina Fey, Poehler, Maya Rudolph, Dratch

Thoughts- John McEnroe!!! YOU CANNOT BE SERIOUS! I think it’s quite sad that random black guy who looks like Dean Edwards but isn’t gets more screen time then Kenan Thompson- a guy with tons of sketch comedy experience. Finesse Mitchell is such an awful singer. He makes Tina Fey sound like she can almost carry a tune. I don’t know why but I really enjoyed this. Tina looked really hot and she’s quite the good dancer as are the other SNL women. This was a fun monologue that got the crowd into it and was a very nice way to start the show. ***

Cryogenics

Cast- Chris Parnell, Poehler, Rudolph, Seth Meyers, Jeff Richards

Thoughts- It took them way too long to get the joke of the skit. Amy’s lactose intolerant line was pretty funny and there were a couple chuckles to be had but for the most part the humour fell flat. And it took them too long to make the Ted Williams joke. *3/4

Man in the Box

Cast- Roddick, Jimmy Fallon

Thoughts- I believe they aired this skit during the Eric McCormack show and I believe it sucked. While I do acknowledge that Jimmy is very talented in that he can do all those different voices at once- that doesn’t really make it funny. And Andy Roddick is just bad- he sucks at playing himself. His girlfriend obviously told him all she knew about acting. This skit had maybe one or two funny lines but Jimmy’s wacky voices just didn’t click. ½*

Tennis Hall of Fame

Cast- McEnroe, Roddick, Darrell Hammond, Thompson, Mitchell, Fred Armisen

Thoughts- Kenan and Finesse looked absolutely hilarious as the Williams sisters and were the sole highlight. Darrell’s impression of the tennis commentator did nothing for me since as SNL didn’t figure out-

NO ONE CARES ABOUT TENNIS

Fred’s impression of Billie Jean King was okay but the tennis match was just too predictable. Also- Billie Jean King v. Bobby Riggs was not the first Battle of the Sexes. Riggs also faced off against Margaret Smith Court in the match no one remembers. Why does no one remember it? Because Riggs won.

Aside from the Williams sisters this skit had nothing. ¾*

Governess

Cast- Roddick, Dratch, Poehler, Parnell

Thoughts- And the parade of crap just keeps on rolling. Nice to see Roddick playing someone other then himself- even though he sucked. I don’t even understand what the point of this was. To show us Rachel can sing? It was hard to understand most of what Rachel was saying but I’m going to assume it was not funny. Mary Poppins came out like 40 years ago so if you’re gonna spoof something- at least try and be recent about it. This was just pointless drek. DUD

Parnell and McEnroe

Cast- McEnroe, Parnell

Thoughts- Hey- a funny skit. I almost forgot SNL did these. McEnroe and Parnell really worked well together and McEnroe’s lines about Roddick sucking were funny because they were really true. I also marked out for McEnroe saying ‘You cannot be serious’. This was a fun skit with good lines and it made me laugh. It was also a nice change of pace from Andy Roddick. ***1/2

Hall and Oates

Cast- Roddick, Forte, Armisen

Thoughts- When Will and Fred team up and are unable to bring the funny then you know this show is in trouble. Nice to see Andy Roddick not playing himself. The premise of the skit just wasn’t very funny to begin with. Forte and Armisen tried to make it work but they couldn’t rise above the material that was written for them. *1/2

Mr. Williams

Cast- Roddick, Thompson

Thoughts- Kenan tried- I’ll give him that. Andy Roddick once again finds new ways to show how horrible an actor he is. Why did SNL even let him host anyway? No one cares about tennis to begin with. People care even less about men’s tennis. Get LeBron James or something- at least people have heard and care about him. Kenan was really funny here while Andy was dead weight. **1/4

Dave Matthews

Thoughts- No they still haven’t changed the train sign. This wasn’t bad but it wasn’t good either. How do I know? I flipped over to Canucks v. Wild- but flipped back rather then stay and watch for a few minutes. Good to see the guy from Phish earning a second paycheque. Was he the accused child molester? This was decent unspectacular stuff. **

Weekend Update

Cast- Fey, Fallon, Forte, Sanz

Thoughts- I said everything I wanted to say last week about the fat tub of goo. But it’s Lorne’s show. And if he enjoys unprofessionalism and ruined Updates then more power to him. Horatio wasn’t as bad as he was last week. But his appearances still was awful and was an insult to the viewers and aspiring cast members of Saturday Night Live.

The jokes were a step below last weeks jokes- Even though I enjoyed the jabs at Dennis Kuchnich and George Bush. I guess Jimmy learned the hard way that nobody watches David Letterman. It was also great to see Will Forte back at the Update desk as Tim Calhoun was once again hilarious and it was good to see Tim back. With the upcoming presidential election I hope they use him again.

Update was really good but my hatred of Horatio’s antics are making it hard for me to give them high ratings. Please leave him off Update next week. PLEASE. ***3/4

Tennis Talk

Cast- Roddick, Forte, Rudolph, Meyers

Thoughts- I don’t think Andre Agassi had hair when he married Brooke Shields. I know he shaved his head in 94-95 which is around the same time he married Brooke. The Andres was cute with Will Forte’s being the funniest. Scott Joplin may be one of the most annoying recurring characters that Maya has created- and that says a lot. This had a cute premise but not a very funny execution. *1/4

Merv the Perv

Cast- Roddick, Poehler, Dratch, Parnell, Rudolph

Thoughts- Maybe it’s because everything else has been pretty bad tonight or Chris Parnell was so out of the top- but this actually had me laughing. Merv the Perv’s intro he got was also very funny. The dirty jokes and double entendres that Merv spat out were quite funny on occasion. The cheesiness and Andy Roddick did drag this down a bit. It was post 12:30 and we’ve had nothing but crap so I’ll be generous. **1/2

Dave Matthews

Thoughts- This wasn’t too bad. I like Dave Matthews better with the Phish guy then I do when he is with his usual band. **1/4

Jock Talk

Cast- McEnroe, Roddick, Richards, Meyers

Thoughts- John McEnroe was in 4 skits tonight. Kenan Thompson has been in two skits in the last two episodes. There’s something wrong with that. I like McEnroe and all but what’s the point of having him on the show to begin with? Why not spend time crafting skits around actual cast members and featured players who need the exposure rather then a retired tennis player who no one cares about. It just bothers me seeing funny people wasted on a comedy show. And Kenan is funny. This skit was just bad. Not even Seth Meyers could make this funny. And that’s really bad. I really don’t see why they still bother giving Jeff characters when he’s obviously not talented at doing them. Plus Darrell seems to be having a bad start to his impressions- so let Jeff have some fun out there and see what happens. Anything is better then this garbage. DUD

Action 13

Cast- Roddick, Forte, Rudolph

Thoughts- Is it just me or does everytime SNL spoofs a news broadcast (aside from WU) it ends up not being very funny? At first I was laughing but then the loud music just became annoying. It would’ve been funnier had other stuff gone wrong with the news broadcast rather then just the music not cutting off. Just my 2 Canadian Cents. *

Bottom Line- Avg. skit was *.78 making this show not even close to thumbs in the middle territory. Andy Roddick was just awful here and dragged down skits with his horrible acting. I really wish SNL would stop booking athletes- they just aren’t very funny and the novelty wears thin very quickly. Thank God Alec Baldwin is coming back next week. He could give the show the shot in the arm that it needs. But when the hardest part of writing a review is finding different ways to say ‘that sucked’- then you know you’ve got an awful show.

Thumbs Down

I caught some of the show. Man, was it ever brutal. I really have no idea who Andy Roddick is. I also wish Jimmy and Horatio would stop laughing at each other. SEPARATE THEM!

Next week should be alright, except for the "musical" guest. I don't think there's any popular musician out there that I hate as much as Missy Elliott. I believe it all stems from her singing that song "One Minute Man" when she has no right to be picky about men.

I can't believe you all hated it. The Hall and Oats skit was awesome, I'd never seen the Scott Joplin character before and the three Agassi's were awesome. John McEnroe - Awesome. Don't knock on JImmy and Horatio for the crack up. Seriously, Horatio wasn't laughing and Jimmy laughed for a couple seconds, then proceeded to the do the bit almost laugh free. And it was a funny bit. I think Roddick did an awesome job. Probably the best show this season. I didn't have to change the channel during any sketch and Roddick may not be a great actor but neither was Michael Jordan or Charles Barkley. Roddick has a Seann William Scott sense about him and that is awesome.

Andy Roddick is bad but at least he's more famous than Johnny Mosely....who the fuck picked Johnny Mosely to be a SNL host. Although Mosely was a bit better than Roddick and had a "career" afterwards as the host of Real World/Road Rules challenge.

McEnroe should of been host instead of the pretty boy Andy Roddick.

Forte was great in the Weekend Update as the politician but once again Sanz screwed up and would not stop giggling and ruined his skit.

I do not want to see this episode on E! or Comedy Central ever again, this is the worst show ever, only one skit with the host was watchable and Merv the Perv was not that great. Lose the tape and burn the master, no more sports stars please!

Cold Opening

I thought it was decent. Better than the usual ones from this season (like Darrell's Bush and Arnold). Still don't get the Tuesday joke. Amy did a great Stewart impression, but Rachel's Walters wasn't the best. But then I can't really think of anyone who could ever do a good Walters impression.

Monologue

I thought this was a great opening. At first I thought it was weird that it barely featured the host, but it made sense later. I liked the continuity from last week's show. Pretty funny and unexpected. Mitchell did a great Outkast impression here, even to the ability to sing like that dude. I liked it.

Cryogenics

Not too funny. The faux commercials this year haven't been to good, as compared to some of last years (like the Joe Millionaire spoofs). Eh.

Man in the Box

This was okay. The racist joke parts got a laugh out of me, but nothing spectacular.

Tennis Hall of Fame

Kenan and Finesse were the only good part of this skit. The rest was boring, and more like crappy All That fare.

Governess

Eh. Can't say much good about this one. I don't exactly remember anything funny from this skit, but I also don't remember anything terribly awful.

Parnell and McEnroe

This was great. It wasn't drawn out like I expected it to be, so the jokes were funny and then we moved on.

Hall and Oates

Nothing really funny here, but the song was nice.

Mr. Williams

Kenan brings the funny here. He does great whenever he's given something, as seen in this skit. Andy Whatever didn't do much to remember though.

Dave Matthews

I still don't like the DMB. The song was kind of bland, but maybe that's my bias.

Weekend Update

I thought this was good up until the Horatio part. What was the joke for that again? Tim Calhoun rocked.

Tennis Talk

I hated this skit. Of all the crappy characters Maya has to do, this one was pretty damn bad.

Merv the Perv

Woke me up a bit, especially after many of the misses from before.

Dave Matthews

Ng.

Jock Talk

Not much funny.

Action 13

Interesting joke, but not much good to say.

Overall, an okay show. Not really, really terrible, but not great either. Oh well.

Well, I'll give him this; Roddick was nowhere near as bad as Wayne Gretzky was back in the day.

Still, McEnroe should have hosted, or better yet, SNL should never let a tennis player host SNL ever ever ever again.

And man, was I ever thankful when I saw the skit about Mr. Williams. I was afraid that Kenan's only line on the show would be "Yes!"

at this point, I get more of a rush from the classic episode. Poor Mondale.

The classic episode was quite good I thought. I marked out seeing the Folksmen. Some of the humour was lost on me like always but I thought it was quite the good show. And yes- poor Walter Mondale.

Next week should be alright, except for the "musical" guest. I don't think there's any popular musician out there that I hate as much as Missy Elliott. I believe it all stems from her singing that song "One Minute Man" when she has no right to be picky about men.

If it makes you feel better- I think Missy lost a lot of weight. Alec Baldwin's hosted 10+ times so he should be fine.

I can't believe you all hated it. The Hall and Oats skit was awesome

The Hall and Oates skit was just retarded. The premise wasn't funny and the cast couldn't save it.

I'd never seen the Scott Joplin character before and the three Agassi's were awesome.

The Scott Joplin character was done during the Bernie Mac show I believe. The three Agassi's would've been better if Roddick could act.

Don't knock on JImmy and Horatio for the crack up.

I don't watch SNL to see people crack up. I watch it so I will crack up.

Seriously, Horatio wasn't laughing and Jimmy laughed for a couple seconds

Horatio WAS laughing- as was Jimmy.

then proceeded to the do the bit almost laugh free. And it was a funny bit.

Wow- they were able to do the skit almost laugh free- they deserve a medal. The bit was amusing but it still wasn't very funny.

I think Roddick did an awesome job.

By showing he has no acting ability whatsoever?

I didn't have to change the channel during any sketch and Roddick may not be a great actor but neither was Michael Jordan or Charles Barkley.

I wanted to change the channel during almost every skit. And the Jordan show was actually funny. The Barkley show was okay.

Roddick has a Seann William Scott sense about him and that is awesome.

Seann William Scott isn't THAT bad.

Andy Roddick is bad but at least he's more famous than Johnny Mosely....who the fuck picked Johnny Mosely to be a SNL host.

Mosely was picked because of the NBC-Olympics thing. Didn't he end up not even medalling?

McEnroe should of been host instead of the pretty boy Andy Roddick.

Yea- at least we know McEnroe has a sense of humour about himself. I agree with the other points you made raza.

Well, I'll give him this; Roddick was nowhere near as bad as Wayne Gretzky was back in the day.

Bah- the Wayne Gretzky show owns. I actually have some of that episode on tape. Anal Retentive Fisherman, Wayne v. Wayne- it's all good.

Still, McEnroe should have hosted, or better yet, SNL should never let a tennis player host SNL ever ever ever again.

Yea- tennis players should be banned from NBC.

And man, was I ever thankful when I saw the skit about Mr. Williams. I was afraid that Kenan's only line on the show would be "Yes!"

I'm happy Kenan got a skit to show his stuff but Andy Roddick had to drag it down. Hopefully he gets more airtime when Sharpton hosts.

I only caught the Weekend Update, and (forgive me because I don't watch SNL often so I don't know his name) the guy anchor totally ruined it for me, giggling throughout the entire thing. The hell is wrong with him?

Jimmy and Horatio always make each other crack up and ruin skits. Everyone knows this and most people hate it- except for Lorne Michaels. It really is dragging down the show.

Bob, you're so anal retentive about the actors cracking up. I find it makes me laugh even more to know that they fucked up. Maybe that's why I loooove outtaker/blooper reels on movies.

I thought it just looked stupid and unprofessional. Seriously, one of the first things I did in drama class a few years back was learn how to control laughter.

But maybe that's just me, I don't know :P

That's the thing- they weren't laughing because they fucked up. They weren't laughing because a prop fell.

They laughed for no reason.

Keep in mind that they have a dress rehearsal where they can get all their giggles out and not hurt the show as a whole.

I think it's part of their schtick anymore. I wouldn't be surprised if they cracked up on purpose or were told to by Lorne. It's almost like a recurring character. Ok, the material isn't that strong, but we'll have Sanz and Fallon start laughing to hide that and make people remember the skit for that. Hearing other people laugh is contagious and gets them laughing too. I think that speaks to how dreadful the show has been the last few seasons and how bad the cast is. I know Bob worships Tina Fey, but I think it might be a smart idea to do a 1986 and clean out nearly the entire cast and writing crew and start over. I think Fey's type of humor as one of the head writers has played out and isn't clicking anymore.

Cold Opening

Cast- Rachel Dratch, Amy Poehler

-ok, nothing special though *1/2

Monologue

Cast- John McEnroe, Andy Roddick, Finnese Mitchell, Tina Fey, Poehler, Maya Rudolph, Dratch

-I liked the John McEnroe part...but other then that it wasn't great. And the little OUtkast bit was very very pointless. *

Cryogenics

Cast- Chris Parnell, Poehler, Rudolph, Seth Meyers, Jeff Richards

-ehhh...couple good one liners, that's it. *

Man in the Box

Cast- Roddick, Jimmy Fallon

-This is kind of like a real radio show like this...it's not funny, just very annoying.DUD!

Tennis Hall of Fame

Cast- McEnroe, Roddick, Darrell Hammond, Thompson, Mitchell, Fred Armisen

-Nope. Not feeling it. DUD! Like Bob said, no one cares about tennis. I know he;s the host and all, and you have to play towards tennis...but this is just bad.

Governess

Cast- Roddick, Dratch, Poehler, Parnell

-I'll give it something for the vulgar joke at the end. But not too much cause you say it coming. 1/2*

Parnell and McEnroe

Cast- McEnroe, Parnell

-Gotta love the fact that the best stuff in the show is coming from a sub guest star. McEnroe is funny. But he's a little stiff doing comedy. **

Hall and Oates

Cast- Roddick, Forte, Armisen

-DUD! with a "no comment"

Mr. Williams

Cast- Roddick, Thompson

-So far this was the best thing going...and that's not a compliment. Kennan was good, although I think Tracy Morgan would have been better. **1/2

Weekend Update

Cast- Fey, Fallon, Forte, Sanz

-much like last week...everything was going smoothly till they brough in other people. Forte was the shits, I just don't like the bit. And Sanz and Fallon suck balls together. I know they're buddies and all....maybe that's why they can't work well together. ***

Tennis Talk

Cast- Roddick, Forte, Rudolph, Meyers

-Wo...this skit was so shitty they had to bring it back again. The idea was almost ok. But once again, no one cares for tennis. Any jokes made were killed by Maya interupting and having the attention on her. And I didn't like the future thing. And yes Bob, it gets an exclimation mark. DUD!

Merv the Perv

Cast- Roddick, Poehler, Dratch, Parnell, Rudolph

-This was just about a complete ripoff of the Mel Gibson skit they did years back. Couple decient one liners, but that's it. *1/2

Jock Talk

Cast- McEnroe, Roddick, Richards, Meyers

-I was busy when this was on. Didn't see it.

Action 13

Cast- Roddick, Forte, Rudolph

-Bad bad bad! Once it started you knew the joke right away...and it went on and on and on to a DUD!

Wow...5 DUD!s. Maya was awful. As was Andy, seemed to remind me of the Johnny Mosley episode. Fallon and Sanz are just bad together...cut the cord, Loren, cut it.

Here's hoping that next week we get some Schwetti Weiners and Schwetti Balls with Alec.

I'll call it.....

Schweddy Buns....They can probably get Ana Gasteyer and/or Molly Shannon to cameo.

I think it's part of their schtick anymore. I wouldn't be surprised if they cracked up on purpose or were told to by Lorne.

I'm starting to think Lorne may be encouraging it. Even though Horatio's airtime became limited after the Gordon show.

It's almost like a recurring character. Ok, the material isn't that strong, but we'll have Sanz and Fallon start laughing to hide that and make people remember the skit for that.

It's starting to really wear thin with a lot of people. The backlash has been building up and building up and I think last week it just became unleashed.

Hearing other people laugh is contagious and gets them laughing too.

I've never liked them cracking up. Even when I was 11 I thought it was stupid. Then again I was 11- there wasn't much cracking up.

I think that speaks to how dreadful the show has been the last few seasons and how bad the cast is.

That's the thing- the show hasn't been dreadful at all. They still put out great shows. There are shows that have been done the past few seasons that I would put rank in my top 5 of all time. SNL always has a mini-slump during a season- and this is the slump.

The cast isn't bad at all. Tina Fey, Amy Poehler, Seth Meyers, Kenan Thompson, Will Forte, Fred Armisen Darrell Hammond (when he wants to be), Chris Parnell (when used correctly), Jeff Richards (when he's doing impressions) are all immensly talented people. It's just that Lorne keeps giving airtime to shitheads like Horatio and Maya despite the fact they get nothing from the crowd or the fans.

I know Bob worships Tina Fey, but I think it might be a smart idea to do a 1986 and clean out nearly the entire cast and writing crew and start over.

There's no need to clean out the whole cast. They just need to tweak some of the cast.

I think Fey's type of humor as one of the head writers has played out and isn't clicking anymore.

We don't really know who writes what though. And in the end- it's all up to Lorne.

Guest stardust

No, they didn't.

I think the MAD TV skit was funnier simply because it was an actual parody of the video, and was done very well. The SNL one had me scratching my head asking "Where the hell did that come from?"

See, Bob that's where we differ greatly. I've really fell out of watching the show the past few years because I've totally hated the cast and bits of shows I've seen. Although I haven't seen much of the new additions like Kenan, the rest of the cast I know of makes it one of the worst I've ever seen. I simply don't see the talent that you do. It could be that we have different senses of humor too, because I haven't found anything funny since Fey arose as head writer. I say we're of two different wavelengths because in my mind this is about the lowest low for the show since the original cast left and everyone's brother came on.

I guess we do see stuff differently Deacon but Fey has been head writer since 1999 and nothing but good has come to SNL.

Weekend Update has been revitalized.

SNL became the centre for political humour.

They won an emmy for writing for the first time in a long time.

Ratings have increased.

SNL's voice in the media has increased dramatically.

Fey has done nothing but good for Saturday Night Live's image in the media.

And come on Deacon- You hated all this-
