the pinjockey 0 Report post Posted November 27, 2003 I would be Cecil Fielder minus the HR hitting ability. Big fat guy who can't run, then proceeds to be a big fay guy after his playing days are over.

Vern Gagne 0 Report post Posted November 27, 2003 I figure I'll take the Billy Beane route. Suck at playing, and work my way into upper management. Beane was one of the top high school prospects, he had a cup of coffee in the bigs but never lived up to his potential.
Guest FrigidSoul Report post Posted November 27, 2003 with 300k you could buy a Hit-Away...its endorsed by Reggie Jackson, meaning you'll be a slugger in no time! hehe And Al, for your defensive incapabilities, you can get the Fred McGriff-endorsed Tom Emanski's "Defensive Drills". Watch as a bunch of teens robotically field and throw the ball. Hehe Hermit, I have the perfect idea! We buy a Hit-Away and the Defensive Drills video. Then we buy babies off the black market and raise a super army of baseball players who can make us millions in 20 years!
Guest FrigidSoul Report post Posted November 28, 2003 Theo Epstein had Thanksgiving dinner at the Schilling household. That IMO is a positive sign

Guest FrigidSoul Report post Posted November 28, 2003 Theo was invited by Curt to have dinner with them, he didn't force his way into it. They're working out the contract extension and thus far its suppose to be $14-15mill a year
the pinjockey 0 Report post Posted November 28, 2003 According to an ESPN.com article, they didn't discuss anything today contract wise. It just seems like common courtesy, if Epstein flew out there the day before Thanksgiving, to invite him to dinner.

But this quote implies that something more should be read into TODAY, instead of just realizing Epstein was out there, so invite him over.

Cartman 0 Report post Posted November 28, 2003 Nomar isn't going anywhere, FYI. Manny probably isn't either, IMHO. SO stop getting all your hopes up that A-Rod is coming to Boston because, trust me, he isn't. The ONLY reason to trade Nomar is if he doesn't want to stay in Boston and re-sign a long term extention. Contrary to popular media belief(Read: Dan Shaugnessy)(sp?) Nomar actually WANTS to stay in Boston. How do I know that? Because Peter Gammons says Nomar told him this straight out. I dunno about the rest of you but I would not expect Gammons to flat out lie when he says Nomar told him he love playing here and wants to stay. That other Boston Globe writer never quoted Nomar as to saying anything about his like, or dislike, of Boston. Take that for what it's worth. That all being said, why the hell would Boston spend 10 million a year more than that have to to get a SS when the one they have isn't far off from the one everyone wants here. A-Rod is great but he isn't 10 million better than Nomar. Now for the Manny situation, he doesn't want to be here, his contract is sad, and Boston wants to make him happy by letting him go. BUT... It would be very bad buisness to replace He, and Nomar, just because he doesn't want to play here. He will play here and he will still play the same way he has since coming here. He is still playing like an All-Star, even if he says he wants out. I dunno about you but I would much rather have Nomar AND Manny as opposed to just A-Rod and some middle-of-the-road outfielder like Reggie Sanders(since that's the name people love to throw around as a cheap replacement for Manny). I got news for you all, Sanders doesn't put fear into opposing teams and their pitchers like Manny and Nomar together do. A-Rod would still be the feared bat in the lineup, but he would be the ONLY one. Remember, one of the reasons Ortiz had such a great year is becaise of Manny batting in front of him. EVIL~! alkeiper 0 Report post Posted November 28, 2003 Castillo, Lowell set to return in 2004 If Florida gets those two signed, they have a fairly good working model for their 2004 lineup. If they don't re-sign I-Rod, they'll still have Mike Redmond to catch.

Guest Anglesault Report post Posted November 29, 2003 GOD FUCKING DAMNIT. I don't know what bothers me more. Schilling as a Sox or the idea that someone who could have shoved the dream killer out of the Yankees rotation isn't a Yankee. We still have only two definite pitchers (Moose and Contreras), with a question mark in Lieber and that THING still in the rotation. FUCK FUCK FUCK FUCK FUCK. Bored 0 Report post Posted November 29, 2003 Anglesault this may be a blessing in disguise because the Yankees would have departed with Nick Johnson to get Schilling. They'd really regret that when in May or June, Giambi goes on the DL again because he's knees can't take the beating of playing in the field everyday. Johnson needs to be their everday first baseman and Giambi needs to be the everyday DH. Its never smart to trade young talent for a 37-year old starting pitcher and never understood the Red Sox and the Yankees fascination in trying to get Schilling. This win now at all costs philosophy always catches up to you eventually.
Guest FrigidSoul Report post Posted November 29, 2003 We gave up shit to get Schilling. Only prospect we'll miss De Larosa. Colangelo was demanding both Soriano and Nick Johnson for Schilling because Steinbrenner screwed him before on a deal. Evidently they're willing to part with Nick Johnson for pitching because Bernie Williams' knees are so bad now that he needs to DH as well. Gammons said the Yankees have their sights locked on Eric Milton now

This win now at all costs philosophy always catches up to you eventually. I really don't think an organization that hasn't won a championship in 85 years cares about what happens 3 or 4 years down the line. Of course, now SI is going to put Schilling, Lowe and Pedro on the cover of their baseball preview, forcing me to drive to NYC and take Peter King hostage. Yes, I know he's a football writer, but that was the first name that came to me. And like FrigidSoul said, the Sox didn't lose much. Fossum was given plenty of chances to be worth a damn and failed and the Sox already should be rid of Lyon (he was originally in the Suppan deal last year.) Bored 0 Report post Posted November 29, 2003 (edited) Funny how the Yankees have been on the Sports Illustrated baseball preview issue the last three years and of course didn't win it all the last three years. I know Pedro was on the '99 cover. Edit: Pedro was on the 2000 cover not the '99. Hmmm. Edited November 29, 2003 by Bored

Guest FrigidSoul Report post Posted November 29, 2003 I hope the Yankees pay Greg Maddux $10mill to join them because Bartolo is too fat to make such a long move from Chicago to NY and Milwood wants to be the ace of whatever team he's on. Then I hope Pettite goes to Houston. The Yankees powerhouse rotation Mussina Maddux Contreras Lieber Weaver

Its never smart to trade young talent for a 37-year old starting pitcher It's never a good idea to have a near guaranteed loss every fifth day especially when your other four pitchers may not be able to carry the slack. Pitching wins you ballgames. Bad pitching will lose said ballgame. I certainly don't want to give up Johnson, but we need SOME one to cover the gaping hole that (possibly) Pettite and Wells leaving an Weaver staying creates. I'm also not exactly thrilled with the idea of facing Schilling about eight times a year.

Don't forget that Clemens be gone too Well, that's the only definite, but yeah, I should have added him. The Yankees powerhouse rotation Mussina Maddux Contreras Lieber Weaver So, Mussina, another old man who may or may not be back to his old self, Mr. Injury, a huge question mark and The Dream Wrecker. Oh my God. It should be noted that I do have faith in the first three as long as nothing unforseen happens. I also have hope for Lieber. But, I have no luck, so Mussina will slump, Maddux will die, Contreras and Lieber will get hurt and Weaver will pitch like Weaver.
