I'd guess whoever comes up with these bizarre rankings is the same person who writes the comments. Should be pointed out before last year Tim Worrell had 7 career saves and 20 "blown" saves and didn't seem to effect him.

Breaking news...Aaron Boone is out for the year.

By Tom Verducci, SI.com

NEW YORK (SI.com) -- New York Yankees third baseman Aaron Boone could miss the entire 2004 season after suffering a major knee injury last week while playing basketball in violation of his contract with the club, according to two baseball sources.

The sources said doctors believe Boone suffered a torn anterior cruciate ligament.

The Yankees will seek all or some relief from the $5.75 million they were to pay Boone this season. Boone, whose dramatic home run ended the epic seventh game of the 2003 American League Championship Series against Boston, avoided arbitration Dec. 1 when he agreed to the one-year deal to return to the Yankees. His contract contains a standard clause that prevents the player from engaging in activities considered to pose significant risk of injury. Basketball is specifically mentioned in the clause as a prohibited activity.

Boone, who will turn 31 in March, hit .254 with six homers and 31 RBIs in 54 games with the Yankees after they obtained him in a trade with Cincinnati on July 31, 2003. New York gave up its best pitching prospect, Brandon Claussen, to obtain Boone.

The Yankees expect that Boone will be out for the year, though there is chance he could return in August depending on his rehabilitation.

New York has no full-time replacement on hand to play third base. Utility men Miguel Cairo and Enrique Wilson have never played the position regularly in the big leagues. Prospect Drew Henson hit .234 in Class AAA Columbus last year and is not considered ready for the major leagues.

I hope he bludgeons Boone with a walking cane first.

What a disaster he turned in to.

So as it stands, the Yankees have their choice of Enrique Wilson and Drew Henson to play third base. I thought team depth might be a problem for Texas, but I never thought it would get exposed this early. The Yankees could make a trade, but they have very little available in trade. They'd have to take a bad contract to do it.

AARON FUCKING BOONE!

He blew it last year, and he's blown it for us this year!

"Concerning his contract, I can confirm that there are certain prohibited activities, which include basketball," Cashman said.

Something tells me he wont get paid to sit and rehab the knee.

Good.

Jose Hernandez is about the only free agent 3rd baseman still available...too bad he was just god awful last year. Yankees could take a chance on him and pray he puts up his 2002 numbers but that year definently looks like a fluke. If they get really desperate they could trade for Jeff Cirillo. All things considered they are going to probably just gonna have to go with a giant hole at 3rd for the first half of the season and then try to trade for one at the deadline when a decent one might be available off a team out of contention. Could also call up Mike Bordick and see if he doesn't want to retire and move Jeter to 3rd.

So right now the Os 3B situation (All Star Utility guy Melvin Mora at 3rd) seems a bit better than the Yankees situation.

Of course, this is all moot. The Yankees will scrounge this season out with whoever they can sign for a year and sign Eric Chavez next offseason. You know its gonna happen, especially now.

Just like basically every year of his entire worthless career?

You mean the season where he had to sit himself out just to avoid breaking the single season K record?

Well I already got in one argument about strikeouts might as well get into another. In 2002 Hernandez had a very good year despite the strikeouts. He had an OPS of .834 (OPS+ of 121) and despite his 188 strikeouts he still had a solid .356 OBP. Remember Bobby Bonds holds the single season record and the year he did it he had an OPS of .897 (OPS+ of 135) and still hit over .300. Breaking the strikeout record is overrated as Bonds was a good player and for one season Jose Hernandez was a good player.

Oh and to be a complete geek here is Rob Neyer on the stigma of the strikeout record in his book Rob Neyer's Big Book of Baseball Lineups:

Entering the 2000 season, the major-league record for strikeouts by a hitter in a single season in 189, set by Bobby Bonds in 1970 (a great season for him otherwise). On September 24 against the Rockies, Preston Wilson struck out three times. That gave him 185 K's for the season and the Marlins still had six games left, so it was apparent that Wilson would almost certainly break Bond's record if he continued to play.

Marlins manager John Boles said he didn't want Wilson to break that record, and so he held him out of the lineup for a couple of games. Wilson finsihed with 187 strikeouts.

To me, there's no shame at all in breaking the strikeout record because that simply means that you're good enough to play enough games to break it. And Wilson was very good in 2000: thirty-one homeruns, team-record 121 RBI.

Now getting back to Hernandez other than 2002 his best OPS+ in a full season was only 100 so that would that would likely mean his 2002 year was a fluke. Last year his strikeouts did matter since when he wasn't striking out he wasn't getting on base either, unlike 2002 where he was all or nothing. Last year he was just nothing and nothing with a stomach turning .287 OBP.

For strikeouts, I'll just add that there's nothing inherant about strikeouts that give me any more information about a player that I can't gather from his other numbers. In the case of extreme strikeout players, fans sometimes focus on what the player can't do, rather than what he can do.

As for Hernandez, I would add that his career year came at the age of 32. That's another good sign of a fluke season. Honestly, I don't see too much out there for the Yanks. A poster on another board suggested Durham/Alfonso for Soriano. Whatever the Yankees do, they'll be hard pressed to improve their team from what it was before Boone's injury.

Oakland has said Eric Chavez is the one position player they want to build around due to how young he is. They'll have the money to extend him with Jermaine Dye coming off the books.

Oakland wont be able to match the money the Yankees would offer.

What the Yankees can offer would be irrelevent if the A's and Chavez reach a contract extension this season. Although I think they would have to sign a new deal before the season starts as I don't expect negotiations to go into the season. Beane was definently higher on Chavez than Tejada and the A's have no one the minors who would be ready to step in at 3rd base in 2005 so the chances are better of keeping Chavez. But I don't get my hopes up for keeping any A's player anymore as it just makes it easier to see them go when they do leave.

Chavez signed his last extension in June of 2000. If the A's actually want to keep someone, like they do Chavez, they'll go out of their way. If they just want to make it look like they want the guy back (Tejada, Giambi), they say that they won't negotiate during the season.

Without him they may have lost to the Red Sox.

Not True.

The game was tied.

Nothing gives me reason to suggest the Yankees were gonna lose if he went up and blew it like he did every other time.
