Guest FrigidSoul Posted November 13, 2003 Report Posted November 13, 2003 Winner is Eric Gagne...he deserves NL MVP as well. Only one I would give it to over him is Pudge
Guest Smell the ratings!!! Posted November 13, 2003 Report Posted November 13, 2003 it's bad enough they gave the Cy Young to a guy who pitched 80 innings. If they give him MVP the human race must be extinguished.
Slayer Posted November 13, 2003 Report Posted November 13, 2003 it's bad enough they gave the Cy Young to a guy who pitched 80 innings. If they give him MVP the human race must be extinguished. He pitched only 80 innings because he finished the games quickly and efficiently He deserved this, and certainly deserves at least consideration for the MVP (although my vote would go to Pujols) Oh yeah, when Eck won the dual awards in '92, he also only pitched 80 innings And Mr. Handlebar in '81? 78 innings.
Bored Posted November 13, 2003 Report Posted November 13, 2003 Well wouldn't be the first time but I don't think he'll win. Pujols was the player's choice so I'd say he has a shot. MVP announcements aren't till next week. N.L. Cy Young Voting Points (1st place votes) 1. Eric Gagne (28) 146 2. Jason Schmidt (2) 73 3. Mark Prior (2) 60 4. Russ Ortiz 9
Guest Smell the ratings!!! Posted November 13, 2003 Report Posted November 13, 2003 Pujos and Bonds pretty much blew everyone away this year. And Gagne should definatly get votes since he basically assraped everyone he faced, but I can't give it to him when a guy starts all year with an ERA way under 3.
Guest FrigidSoul Posted November 13, 2003 Report Posted November 13, 2003 And Gagne should definatly get votes since he basically assraped everyone he faced, but I can't give it to him when a guy starts all year with an ERA way under 3. Gagne came in with runners on base too (55 saves yet 80innings? That means more than the 9th in some cases) before the 9th and rather than allowing hits and letting a rally develop he shut them down. I bet hitters would be more likely to say "God, if we can just have a lead after 7" when facing the Dodgers than "I hope we don't have Schmidt today" when facing the Giants. Gagne strikes fear and causes teams to lose hope in coming back when he enters...when people face Schmidt they usually don't panic because they have like the whole game to get to him
The Ghost of bps21 Posted November 13, 2003 Report Posted November 13, 2003 Gagne totally deserved it. I get why pitchers shouldn't win the MVP since they have their own award and don't play every day... But as there is no closing pitcher award...cheers to the best season a closer can have.
Guest FrigidSoul Posted November 13, 2003 Report Posted November 13, 2003 But as there is no closing pitcher award...cheers to the best season a closer can have. well there is...its just not hyped Rolaid's Relief Pitcher of the Year
Red Baron Posted November 13, 2003 Report Posted November 13, 2003 i don't think Gange was ever chased out this year, except the all-star game.
Vern Gagne Posted November 13, 2003 Report Posted November 13, 2003 Winner is Eric Gagne...he deserves NL MVP as well. Only one I would give it to over him is Pudge Pudge didn't have an MVP caliber season. Bonds and Pujos are the front runners. Sheffield, and Lopez warrant more considertion than Pudge.
Kahran Ramsus Posted November 13, 2003 Report Posted November 13, 2003 Good choice. Closers are really underrated in baseball. You don't appreciate them until you don't have one, and blow all your leads late in the game. Gagne had one of the best seasons by a pitcher ever. He deserved the award.
HarleyQuinn Posted November 13, 2003 Report Posted November 13, 2003 Also add in the fact that Gagne tied the NL Saves record with 55 Saves(Not to mention going perfect throughout the season as well), definitely deserving of the award
Guest FrigidSoul Posted November 13, 2003 Report Posted November 13, 2003 Prior was robbed. If Prior hadn't collided with that other player and instead made all his starts he may have gotten it over Gagne...still, that's a big maybe
Bruiser Chong Posted November 14, 2003 Report Posted November 14, 2003 Prior was robbed. Haha, I was thinking the same exact thing and even gonna post it as "Prior wuz robbed," and then like two seconds later I saw your post. Cubs fans think alike.
EVIL~! alkeiper Posted November 14, 2003 Report Posted November 14, 2003 Eckersley's MVP in '92 was one of the worst years ever for the award. No closer should garner the MVP, IMO. With that said, Gagne actually led pitchers in Win Shares, so I see no problem with the closer winning the Cy Young this year.
Guest Anglesault Posted November 14, 2003 Report Posted November 14, 2003 Prior was robbed. If Prior hadn't collided with that other player and instead made all his starts he may have gotten it over Gagne...still, that's a big maybe The Yankee game? With the Korean guy? It was Prior who collided in that game? I thought it was Wood for some reason
EVIL~! alkeiper Posted November 14, 2003 Report Posted November 14, 2003 Wrong incident. You're thinking of Choi colliding with Wood along the baseline. This incident occured when Prior ran into Marcus Giles near second base.
sfaJack Posted November 14, 2003 Report Posted November 14, 2003 The Yankee game? With the Korean guy? It was Prior who collided in that game? I thought it was Wood for some reason No, a game against the Braves just before the All-Star break. Prior was running to second and he collided with that little pissant Marcus Giles, injuring his shoulder and shelving him for nearly a month. EDIT: Damn it Al, you're too quick.
Guest Anglesault Posted November 14, 2003 Report Posted November 14, 2003 The Cubs did a lot of colliding. I remember Prior being out, but I remember nothing of that collision.
The Czech Republic Posted November 14, 2003 Report Posted November 14, 2003 Cubs fans think alike. And Cubs fans are great minds.
Big McLargeHuge Posted November 14, 2003 Report Posted November 14, 2003 Great year Gagne had. I still think a starter should be awarded the Cy, though.
phoenixrising Posted November 14, 2003 Report Posted November 14, 2003 Gagne deserved the Cy Young. He didn't blow a save opportunity and absolutely dominated the opposition. The three runner-ups had good years, but really not good enough for the Cy Young. Prior probably would have won 20 and gotten more consideration had he not missed a month, and Ortiz won 22 in large part to good run support. Schmidt led the league in ERA and was solid every time out, but I think when you try to compare them Gagne had the better season. As for MVP I think Gagne will get consideration, but it will probably be either Pujols or Bonds.
Sandman9000 Posted November 14, 2003 Report Posted November 14, 2003 Had Gagne not won, it would have established a precedent that closers couldn't win the Cy Young award. 55 perfect innings, only blemish being the All-Star Games, what more do you ask out of a closer? What could a closer do to top that, aside from the obvious "win more games," and even then would that closer be considered for the Cy Young? Gagne was lights out the entire season. He deserved this award. Game Over indeed.
Hogan Made Wrestling Posted November 14, 2003 Report Posted November 14, 2003 Bah screw this. Jason Schmidt was the best pitcher in baseball this year, and he's going home empty handed after putting up a Greg-Maddux-in-his-prime-like season?
Guest Smues Posted November 14, 2003 Report Posted November 14, 2003 .....I FUCKING HATE Gagne....but he did earn the award....grumble grumble grumble... How ever if he wins the MVP MLB can eat my ass. Oh and "i don't think Gange was ever chased out this year, except the all-star game. " It wasn't a save situation but in I believe May Atlanta beat his ass and he was pulled. He was pissed off and kicked over a trashcan and on the way out. DON'T LET TRASH A CAN ABUSER WIN THE MVP!!!

You can't play for the Dodgers without abusing some kind of container in the dugout (see: Carlos Perez and Tommy Lasorda)
Tony149 Posted November 14, 2003 Report Posted November 14, 2003 Gagne deserved it. Helluva season no doubt. If John Smoltz didn't get injured I believe he would of won. Yeah he blew a couple of saves but he's the closer for a contender, a lot more pressure IMO. He was also well on his way to breaking the single-season saves record before he went down.
