PS2 problem

Recommended Posts

OK, so I'm trying to load up Smackdown HCTP, and I get a "buzzing" sound from my machine. I figure, maybe it's the disc, so I try loading Madden. Same thing. Anyone have any ideas as to what the heck has happened to my machine? I've had it for 1-1/2 years, if that helps...

It's the PS2. They all do that, at least the first and second line of PS2's do. That was one of the big gripes about the system.

I'm pretty sure you can send it in and have it repaired for free.

Do you guys have your PS2 standing tall or laying flat? Never stand them up.

Yeah, just like the first PS, they're broken and poorly made. Unlike the PSX situation they admit it and will fix them for free. Just call them up and complain and they will give you the address you can send it to.

HCTP did the same thing to me (and alot of other people) and my PS2 is dead now.

Only thing I can recommend is exchange HCTP and hope you get a better one.

Also get your PS2 fixed or upgrade to a newer model (I'm hearing about these model 50000's that sound awesome)

Just use common sense, why would I need a source?

Do you turn your radio/stereo/cd player on it's side?

It can't help, and it wouldn't hurt to lay it on the side.

I was speaking from experience by the way. I used to stand the PS2 up in a bookcase, and it quit working. A new one, I've layed it down flat and I've had no problems with it. Same model and I've been using the second one longer.

Q: Explain the vertical stand that you can buy if you can't stand them up? Why make something that will break the product from the comp that makes it?

I'm not saying that you can't stand them up. I'm just saying, from my experience, you shouldn't.

Explain the vertical stand and the feature? Simple, it was another selling point.

Well, they do have CD players that can be wall mounted and such. However, I did have my PS2 vertical, and it did work a bit longer once I turned it on its side.

Anyways, given the age of my PS2 (again, about 1-1/2 years), I doubt that the warranty is still valid. Any ideas if this will cost me anything besides shipping?

Oh, and thanks for the advice. It's much appreciated.

This reminds me of something that happened on Monday night.

This kid was trying to trade in a PS2. When we tried it out, it wouldn't read blue discs.

His reasoning: "No PS2's read blue discs anymore."

My reasoning: "Too bad you bought a piece of shit system."

I'm having a similar problem. I just got a gameshark and my PS2 won't read the Gameshark disc but it will read the bonus disc with the ps1 codes on it.

Gee, that's ironclad proof there!

Actually, some PS1 problems were solved (temporarily) by setting the system on its side.

I've had my system in both positions, and currently I've had it on its side for...8 months or more? Something like that.

No major problems. Just some disc read errors that have been solved by cleaning the disc/lens.

The first versions of the PS1 had problems with the sound skipping after a while. When you set the system on its side that would stop it for a while. It was a rather well-known problem.

I know from personal experience, and that's what I did and it worked.

Just because yours conked out upright and hasn't yet conked out while you have it horizontal doesn't mean anything. It leaves out any number of factors.

When you use it, does it lay on carpet?

The fan is on the bottom, and if it sits on the carpet it can suck in dust and clumps and whatnot, resulting in it not being able to read the disc at hand.

 Turning your PSX upside down or on it's side was the 32 bit era equivelent of blowing in your NES carts to get them to work.

Your's was PURELY speculative, mine wasn't. My case was a remedy of the early PS's skipping problems, and worked for me and many others. You were spectulating on what CAUSED a problem with the PS2's, based on just your PS2's. For those who had the first versions of the Playstation, I was just stating n established fact, not a hypothesis.

I (and many others) put the PS on its side--skipping stops/is reduced. Instantaneously confirmable.

If you had a few more cases of friends having the same experience to back up your claim, than you'd have something there.

Also, as I've said my PS2 has been on its side for 8 months with no major problems, and it's one of the older (although not oldest) versions of the system. So, there's a counterexample to your weak hypothesis.

Get an X-Box.

That's all well and good, but I'm not such a diehard gamer that I must have every system that comes out. I've got a GBA and PS2 and that's enough for me. Besides which, I've got a ring to pay for and a wedding to save up for...

If you have the disc read error, here is exactly what you do.

Call them

Tell them you have a disc read error

DO NOT TELL THEM if you use a gameshark or anything that isn't licensed by PS2, I am warning you. If you give them ANYTHING they can use against you, they will.

Go through the step by step they make you go through over the phone

Wait the five boring minutes they make you wait while they pretend to talk to their supervisor.

They will come back on and tell you to send it in with your only cost being to ship it to them and in some cases they will even pick up now. Send it to them and in about a month they will either return your system or a rebuilt system.

Yes, I had to do it so I know how this works. As long as you didn't drop it, spill something on it, or use a gameshark or the like then they will fix it for free. Warranty doesn't matter in this case.

Also, it doesn't matter how you sit your PS2 but when you call them they tell you to place it on its side and what to know if you had it standing up. They claim that it didn't cause a problem but they would like to know.

In other words, they have no clue themselves.

Either way, the first line and second line PS2 seem to break down after 1 1/2 to 2 years. It's hard to say if the new line is having the same problem.

The Parents of the Bride pay for the wedding, thus you can get an X-Box if you want

I know when my disability goes through and I get my back payment check I'm grabbing an X-Box...then placing the rest aside for college so I can work at home in the future and make good money rather than stay on disability.

Anyways the buzzing you hear is the system reading the disc...the older models do that, that's what happens when you put in crappy drives. All ya gotta do is make sure the the lens is always clean, the buzzing doesn't hurt a thing

Thanks for the advice on the disc reading.

As for the wedding, well, nowadays the couple pays most of the costs. But if you can find a girl whose parents are willing to pay for the wedding, well, all power to ya.

I bought my PS2 the first week they came out. Doesnt play blue disks, but everything else works perfectly fine. Thing that sucks is, my Xbox(Got this when it first came out too) SUCKS ASS right now. It freezes on all my games(Even on KOTOR when I FIRST GOT IT) so it's not my games, my Xbox just says they're dirty. That Xbox is a dirty, dirty machine....a tricky one too! :P
