The old WWF title

Recommended Posts

I just realized something, after Hogan won the WWF title, the belt he wore during his first reign was worn only by him. By the time he "lost" it and WrestleMania IV happened they'd switched to the eagle design that was used for 10 years after.

Has there ever been another wrestler who was the only one to wear a specific design for a belt?

Ahh true, but that was in the storyline to be made specifically for Austin, had Hogan lost the title between 84-88, they wouldn't have made a new design.

As a side note, as much as I loved the 88-98 eagle design, I always felt it seemed small for a "World" title.

Remmember the first WCW (1991-94)World title, it was practically a carbon copy of the WWF World title at the time.

I see what you mean about the size of the belt, but I always thought that the Eagle World title was the nicest(craft wise).

The Ultimate Warrior had several different colored straps for his belt. They were also in plans of making a Brahma Bull belt for the Rock, but I don't think that was ever used.

And don't forget that they made a new belt because Curt Hennig smashed the old one with a hammer and that belt became the Hardcore title.

Didn't the NWA do a similar thing with Lex Luger, Nikita Kollof and US strap where Nikita was going to present the winner of a Luger-Spivey match with the new belt and instead wiped Luger out and busted up the belt before it even got used?

Tommy Dreamer wore the NY license plate Hardcore title before it was retired, and Bradshaw had his own hardcore belt as well.

Was there any specific reasoning behind having those belts with the different color leather?

Well, technically, Undertaker wore the Smokin' Skull Belt, after defeating Austin at Over the Edge '99 and wearin' it to the backstage area...

Technically.

Dreamer and Bradshaw's title belts were the same, just with different accessories on them. I thought this was kinda neat...gave the low-carders something to do.

Koloff presented and smashed Luger with the new "U.S. flag design", gold U.S. title at WrestleWar 1991, following Luger's pretty good title defense against Dan Spivey. The new U.S. title was dropped by Luger after winning the WCW crappy world title (read: Flair's got the real one...). Sting won the title at a one-night house show tourney, over TV champ Steve Austin in the finals.

Warrior wore whatever color matched his ring attire on any given night. Don't know about the Attitude Era blue leather though.

When they came out with all of the new title designs at the beginning of the Attitude era they all had different colors. The World was blue, IC was pinkish purple, Lightheavyweight was red and the Tag titles were still black IIRC. I have no idea why they did it though.

Something to note.

Hogan I believe had 3 different versions of the title belt during his first reign.

The first was that huge, ugly one that Backlund and the Iron Sheik had before him.

Then, he had one, smaller in design with the letters WWF spelled out on it. Can't find a picture of it.

From there, he went to the one in the topic, with the pillars on the side.

Oh, and for the record, Andre the Giant held that last one as Champion...for a few minutes, anyway.

EDIT: Picture found The second one I was mentioning

Honestly. the belt Luger was "presented" looked like the old U.S Tag Title belt.

....I'm wondering how WWE can seel the Hogan '85 belt, seeing as how it explicitly spells out 'WWF' instead of the block logo. Also, I love how their world belt at the time was an NWA TV Title knockoff.

Regarding Warrior and his many belts; I recall a story where he'd often forget his title belt when travelling, so the office would simply have a new one ready for him when he'd show up at an arena.

Holy crap. That 86-88 belt is the WCW world title that Luger wore. It looks exactly the same.

If you mean how they can sell a belt with WWF in it because of the settlement with the World Wildlife Fund, it's due to the fact that's it not the scratch logo. Vince had a deal with the Wildlife people on the old bubble logo, but not the new scratch logo, which apparently too closely resembled the same logo the Wildlife Fund was using at the same time. They blur the scratch logo, but anything from the New Generation era or before is fine.

Didn't Taz also have the special FTW belt in ECW?

Yes, he did.

He carried it while waiting for a title shot against Shane Douglas.

Later, he had Sabu pin him in one of my favorite moments in wrestling history. (hits Sabu with one of his Tazplexes into a table, Sabu's out, he pulls Sabu on top of him for the pin)

And when Taz won the ECW World Title, he fought Sabu in a title unification match.

I can see that. The WCW title from 1991-1994 had a sleaker globe and the side plates had a globe with "WCW" above it. Add the "Eagle" design leather to the '86-'88 WWF title belt and you pretty much have the second WCW title.

As for the U.S. title used at WrestleWar, it looked like an older version of the design Luger had that night. It wasn't the one used till 1997 or '98 (it was made bigger) that's for sure.

Holy shit, talk about ugly title belts!

I miss the 88-98 eagle belt myself. Always loved the way Bret Hart looked when wearing that belt.

Wandering off topic here, but who else hates the current WWE title? It's just...bleh.

I like the new WWE Title.

I'm a mark for belts with nameplates. Plus, it's large size is good. For some strange reason, I'd like to see someone like Bret Hart or Shawn Michaels wearing it.

Oh, and it doesn't piss me off for some reason, like what they did to the Big Gold Belt:
