MLW Returns in the New Year

Recommended Posts

This is taken from 1wrestling:

Court Bauer's Major League Wrestling, which last ran in September in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, will return with two live events in January 2004 in Philadelphia, PA at the National Guard Armory on 1/9/04 and The Rexplex in Elizabeth, New Jersey on 1/10/04, according to a telephone conversation with Bauer this morning. The events should be announced today on MLW's website.

The 1/9 Philadelphia, PA event will be headlined by Low Ki vs. Homicide with others scheduled including Vampiro, Mike Modest, Ted Hart, Christopher Daniels, Bryan Danielson, Bobby Quance, Pinoy Boy, Da Hit Squad, CM Punk, Justin Credible, Harry Smith, TJ Wilson, Sonjay Dutt, Josh Prohibition, M-Dogg 20, Matt Martel (aka Stryker in New York indies), Homicide, and Persephonie.

The 1/10 Elizabeth, New Jersey event will feature MLW champion Steve Corino vs. Terry Funk in an I Quit Match as well as Modest, Vampiro, Martel, Hart, Quance, Pinoy, Miller, Smith, TJ Wilson, Credible, Dutt, M-Dogg 20, Prohibition, and others. Tickets for the shows go on sale next week.

Modeling themselves after ROH quite a bit. The question is, does the Northeast need (or able to support) a "second" ROH?

I'm just pissed because that means I'll be at my fourth ROH show on 1/10 and I STILL won't have seen Corino live since ECW folded.

Dammit!

They've got similar rosters and they're going to the same venues, so that's not really modeling. However, if the presentation comes off as an ROH ripoff, no one will get into it. If anything, they're probably going for that ECW hybird, with relatively good storylines, some outlandish workers/gimmicks, with great wrestling mixed in.

I don't think the NE can support another group like this.

I'm pissed they're not going to be on Sunshine. I got the channel with the dish and 3 weeks later they're off. Ugh.

I'm hoping these shows will be taped for Sunshine. I specifically paid extra for this channel as well.

The thing that really irks me is that they really seem to be coming after ROH specifically. If they aren't, then they sure are making it seem that way.

Having a Homicide vs. Ki match after ROH's attempt at it fell through. Booking the same venues. Booking the Rexplex the day before ROH's big WM weekened March show there. All those things seem to add up to more than just a coincidence. Maybe isn't intentional, but it sure does seem that way.

I also don't care for how they are nearly completely abandoning their direction from the past however many months for the Philly show. Ki and Homicide are headlining before one has even debut in the promotion (and Homicide has been no more then a midcarder). It is just obvious that it is a case of "Forget what we did the past ten months...we are just going to do this now because it seems to draw here." It is a lack of creativity and indentity. It is just "do whatever works" instead of having a clear cut messge of what they are about.

3PW is also holding a Ki vs. Homicide matchup at their upcoming show. My guess is that they figure it will draw in the ROH fans who wanted to see the match. That's all well and good, but I see no reason why that should be the main event. Like you said, there are other stars that are just as notable on the MLW roster who have been there longer and percieved as upper echelon (as far as the MLW roster goes) and are being passed up for this match.

As for using the venue the day before, that could be a cost-cutting measure on their part, figuring most talent would be in town, they wouldn't have to fy anyone in, etc.

MLW will surely find a way to make it suck.

My god, do you spend your entire day running around bashing anything not ROH? You're like on every board either being an ROH fanboy, or bashing things that aren't ROH.

MLW WILL find a way to make it suck. Have you seen there recent shows? The way the clip matches are horrid. They made a possibly good J-Cup into shit.

So it's offical MLW is NOT running on Sunshine TV anymore?

Yea, Meltzer reported that they are off Sunshine.

They are going to run on the local Philly station that all the wrestling promotions run on.

It sure is a step to take. From the Sunshine network that was sort of nationally availiable to the Philly station.

Court Bauer really isn't a very good business man. He is so all over the place with his decisions for one thing. This is their third restart in a year. Plus, running a market that already has more then enough wrestling and using the same talent that can already been seen in that area is a little iffy. Case in point, using Homicide vs. Low Ki as your big match to "draw" the Philly fans when 3PW is running that same match (for the second time) weeks earlier. I don't see the point in giving a wrestling-filled market the same wrestlers they could see elsewhere in the era. It would make more sense to run somehwere is less saturated. Even somewhere else on the Northeast since not having to lfy in talent seems to be a problem (though they are still flying in at least a dozen wrestlers from the lineups announced).

It is going to be real interesting to see what happens when push comes to shove. I expect MLW to do alright at the Amory their first show. Their Rexplex show is a little more iffy because I don't know how many people will be up for paying the expenses to attend both shows. I doubt they will reach the paid numbers ROH does there. However, the real telling factor will be the back to back shows at the Rexplex. With ROH also running a convention that day, I don't know how financially possible it will be for people to attend MLW and then all of ROH's events the next day. If those people are also going to Wrestlemania...forget about it. I would think that one of those would have to give, but who knows.

Hopefully they will run in Ohio, as RoH only runs here rarely. Move farther west, there aren't as many good indies out here.

I think you will be getting ROH down there soon.

Feinstein, when asked, always names Florida has the place he would most like to run. With MLW getting leaving Florida, now would be a prime time to run down to pick up some of the people that use to go to MLW shows.

I read the longer version of it at 1wrestling.com, and Court said they are going to be running shows in Florida. WTF is this house show shit. Does that mean they have smaller shows, and bigger shows. Eventually people will only want to go too the bigger shows.... Court is one dumbfucker when it comes to buisness. Oh well I hope MLW comes back too Florida. Hell ROH in Florida would be the shit. Oh well we still Have. MXPW

*assumes that was a joke*

anyway, I don't understand all this, has Bauer or anyone from MLW given a reason for the sudden shift to Philly? Booking reasons aside, the still makes no sense...Philly is already overloaded with wrestling, so they move there and shoot themselves in the foot again..why???? They couldn't think of ANY OTHER PLACE besides the NE? Was any other place even mentioned?

Nobody has pointed out that Teddy Hart is going to be in a lockeroom with Corino and

CM Punk. Should be interesting.
