TV's First Casualties

Recommended Posts

Addend to my earlier post:

A couple years ago I read an article somewhere (someone can probably find it, but I'm not interested enough to hunt) about a bunch of long-running TV shows that bombed in their first seasons, but were given the chance to come through. The only ones I can remember though were Cheers and Full House.

And I can already hear the jokes about that second one, but really, someone(s) had to be watching for it to be on for 8 seasons

<leaves door open said jokes>

Tru Calling looks like a good show but they put it on Thursdays. I record Smackdown on one TV and record Friends usually in the other room. No room for anything else.

One of those shows on Trio about cancelled shows talked about networks being alot less willing to give shows time to find a fan base now. Unless it's a project loved by a higher up shows usually have to find an audience in somewhere around 6 episodes.

This is why you rarely anymore see new shows linger around with middle of the road ratings.

It was me.

reality shows = cheap

scripted shows = not cheap

Networks are trying to get the most out of cheap to make reality shows while the trend is here. The trend has to be dying off by now.

If the network executives today ran the networks of the past, M*A*S*H, All in the Family, the Dick Van Dyke Show, the Andy Griffith Show, I Love Lucy, Taxi, WKRP in Cincinnati, and Seinfeld would never have made it past four weeks.

EDIT: I guess Angelslayer did reference this before me in a roundabout way. But just think about the shows that we would never have seen.

Seinfeld barely made it to TV as it is. If Seinfeld was a current project, it would've never made it past the test showings.

I'm sorry to see Boomtown cancelled - as it truly was a great show - but I'm not surprised to see it go.

Someone SHOULD cancel "Kid Notorious" - it's maybe the most godawful show I've seen in a decade, if not longer.

I watched the first ep of the MUllets cause I was too lazy to change the channel. It was the single worst thing I've ever seen in my life.

Exact same thing, right down to being too lazy to change the channel.

I can honestly say that it's the worst show I've ever seen.

(You may recall That Three's Company is the worst show I've ever seen more than one episode of. THIS is what saves it from the dubious honor of worst ever.)

Tru Calling is a paradox for me, because I like watching Eliza (she's so hot) but the show itself is terrible. I'm so conflicted.

I hated Kid Notorious before it even aired. As soon as I saw the promos for it where they gave it more time than South Park, I knew it was just another "CEO favorite" that was going to be pushed down our throats.

Of course Comedy Central is going to give a new show more promo time than South Park. I mean why wouldn't they?

It's not like South Park needs more promo time. Besides SP gets plenty of promo time before a batch of new episodes start airing.

Remember, we televised "Shasta McNasty" --- don't worry, you don't remember it --- so we'll televise almost ANYTHING.

Hey the first few ep's of Shasta Mcnasty were GREAT.

Damn straight. It went downhill RIGHT when they made Verne Troyer a regular, but at the beginning I thought it was really funny. Of course, I WAS twelve at the time it aired, but...
